It's the same for me, but on Debian Etch. I've never considered this a bug, but maybe it is?!
It's not a bug, you just have to set your cursor at start up :)
That's exactly what I expected.
/usr/bin/xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr
Which looks worlds better than the bit X :)
