I had to follow this guide to get it to work for jdk6: http://keviningolfsland.github.com/2012/07/19/xmonad-and-intellij.html. And I have to use a separate machine for anything that requires java 7. It's too bad this hasn't been fixed and works in every other wm I've tried (e.g. awesome).
