More generally (ie, besides a solution to this particular problem with gnome-keyring), is there a way for me to make sure xmonad will not place windows on parts of my screen that are inaccessible when my laptop is by itself?
If you're using open source video drivers (ie, not the nvidia drivers) merely calling the command xrandr should refresh the number of displays you have, thus making everything work sanely. If you use the nvidia proprietary drivers this doesn't work, because nvidia fails at xrandr.
