Open a window that is automatically floated (transient? I don't know the right word) and for which you know the expected size. In the screenshots below, I used Pidgin, and went to Accounts -> (account name) -> Edit Account, but I have seen this issue with other windows, too. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? See the screenshots. Sometimes the windows are too big, sometimes too small, and rarely are they Just Right. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? darcs head (shortly after 0.6), on Ubuntu Gutsy Please provide any additional information below. I also tested without any xmonad.hs in case it was one of the odd layouts I was using; the problem remains, even then.
