Apparently something has changed in between and now xmonad draws background so that it is very noticeable (and quite annoying). In addition, using the same X server and a different lightweight window manager (such as sawfish or stumpwm), i don't see any flicker or redrawing when switching workspaces: the windows popup instantly, as used to be the case in older versions of xmonad. However, we can change what sort of flicker we see.
