How to build yhc as a bytecode compiler?

(Sent by Neil, since we're having moderation problems...) Hi all, I intend to port yhc to a range of architectures that do not have a ghc installed. On solaris8 I have ghc and I could build yhc without any problems. But now I need a non-native, bytecode version of yhc to be transported to the ghc-less architectures. How can I compile yhc using yhc to obtain the bytecode version? I basically expect the answer to be make # tp build yhc using ghc setenv YHC_BASE_PATH $PWD/inst setenv YHI $YHC_BASE_PATH/bin/yhi cd *somewhere* $YHI *options* *mainfile* Unfortunately I have not the slightest idea what to write for *somewhere* *options* and *mainfile* :-( Can somebody help me? Preferably I need the exact commands that work for the shell. Thanks a lot, Gabor PS: once I have the exact build steps I will do my best to contribute the needed stuff to the makefiles for this type of compilation.

Hello Guys, The first version of the .NET backend for YHC is working. It isn't stable yet but at least I managed to run some simple applications with it, using the compiled yhc-base package. The required compiler changes are quite small. I just had to add an additional compiler option which switches from the bytecode backend to the new backend. Everything else is clearly separated from the rest of the compiler. The .NET backend is using its own runtime library and requires some changes in the base package. I tend to release the backend as open source. Would you like to merge the new backend in the main compiler repository? Alternativelly I will have to keep my own copy repository. Cheers, Krasimir

YHC on debian/arm & Nokia 770 , YHC FFI compatibility for gtk2hs ?

Greetings from the SubArctic, I've acquired a Nokia 770 and would like to write and run Haskell apps on it. The Nokia 770 is a slightly modified debian/arm with 64mb ram and 128mb flash. I want gtk2hs for graphic apps, and I want small binaries so I can distribute apps I've written. That leaves out GHC for size, and nhc98 for lack of gtk2hs. I spoke to Duncan Coutts on IRC, he said that running gtk2hs with nhc98 was unlikely, but gtk2hs with YHC was likely. After reading about YHC some, I am particularly enthusiastic about the idea of tiny bytecode programs with a runtime written in C. Duncan said that the points needed to get gtk2hs working with YHC are: * eliminate use of -fglasgow-exts * get the gtkhs build system working with YHC * figure out if FFI calls will be different with YHC A look at http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~ndm/yhc/report.html implies that the FFI doesn't work at all. Is that correct? Are there any other obstacles in the way of getting gtk2hs working with YHC? Compiling Prelude.hs

Hello Guys, While I was playing with YHC, I tried to rebuild Prelude.hs. I saw that there is a prebuilt version of the entire base package, which is copied when I do: $ Makefile.bat lib I wonder how this bootstrapping version of base was built. When I tried to do this manually the compiler died with stack overflow. Is it because the compiler is tring to import Prelude while compiling Prelude? Krasimir

I don't quite understand all of the code well enough to try to track this down, but I imagine that maybe the parser from this API might need to be updated to the newest version of the bytecode spec? It looks like the loader does a bytecode version check, and it seems to be passing.... I imagine that this parser/pretty-printer worked at some point in time, right?
