Build(bot')ing Yhc with changing ghc versions

Hello, I have been changing my default ghc around lately on the machinery that I use for Yhc buildbotting. The original was ghc-6.4.1, but with a recent ghc-HEAD, I get errors like these: http://www.indiegigs.co.uk:8010/macosx_ppc_3/builds/15/step-yhc/0 ... scons: Building targets ... "ghc" -i./src/compiler98 -i./src/libraries/general -i./src/libraries/core -idepends/cpphs -idepends/filepath -i./src/interactive -package mtl -fwarn-missing-signatures -c src/libraries/core/Yhc/Core/Simplify.hs -o src/libraries/core/Yhc/Core/Simplify.o src/libraries/core/Yhc/Core/Simplify.hs:7:0: Bad interface file: ./src/libraries/core/Yhc/Core/Type.hi mismatched interface file versions: expected 590528065, found 6 scons: *** [src/libraries/core/Yhc/Core/Simplify.o] Error 1 scons: building terminated because of errors. program finished with exit code 2 I presume that this is because the buildbot-controlled build is incremental so that when I change the ghc version used, inconsistencies result. So the question is this: When I change my ghc version, how do I clean up the Yhc buildbot build tree to ensure that everything gets built with the new ghc version? Thanks and best regards Thorkil

Hi, The www.cs.york.ac.uk Yhc repo is out of date, and our move to haskell.org seems to have been a complete success. However, before deleting a pile of source code it seems a good idea to check that no one needs this to stay around? Thanks Neil

Yhc TMR Article?

Hi All, Anyone want to collaberate on a "The Monad Reader" article? Just an overview of Yhc, where we are taking it, our hopes and goals etc? Would be nice to have an informal introduction to Yhc, which we can cite in papers and let the community get an inside look on Yhc. The deadline is 13 April, my idea would be that everyone who's interested could do a section or something. Anyone want to be involved? Thanks Neil

build system issues

Here are some observations about yhc's build system. (1) "scons install" doesn't seem to install anything. How do I install yhc to a standard location after building it? (2) If there is a problem with any of the scons configuration steps (e.g. libgmp or wrong version of ghc found), then "scons help" does not work at all. I thus had several days of chasing configuration issues before I could even get scons to give me its usage message! (3) There seems to be no way to tell scons to use a particular version of ghc to bootstrap with, if I happen to have several installed and want to use a specific one. (This is especially a problem if my default version is too old for yhc, like ghc-6.2.2, but for other software I don't want to change the default.) (4) There seems to be no way to tell scons to use specific build options e.g. on my powerpc G5, it would be useful to give -mcpu=g5 to all C compilations, so that it will link properly against the 64-bit libgmp that is installed. I can imagine wanting to give a bunch of options to the haskell compiler we are bootstrapping with too. Would these be difficult to fix? Regards, Malcolm

Slower than nhc?

I remember Tom giving out numbers than Yhc was "around 20% faster" than nhc, it would be a shame if we've broken that since... Thanks Neil
