Hello everyone, Yhc now includes support for concurrency! Because the introduction of concurrency has changed the way stacks work for *all* of Yhc it is possible some bugs have been introduced. The concurrent yhc implementation passes all the unit tests that the single threaded yhc passed, but of course unit tests don't cover all cases. If you find your previously working single threaded programs are now breaking please submit a BUG REPORT to the list :-) Also concurrency support is still new and relatively untested so you might find some concurrent programs that segfault/crash/lock up/etc. ALL BUG REPORTS HIGHLY WELCOME! NOTE: the Windows release for concurrency isn't quite ready but it should be quite soon (thanks Neil for handling this). Anyway, enjoy :-) Tom

How to build yhc as a bytecode compiler?

(Sent by Neil, since we're having moderation problems...) Hi all, I intend to port yhc to a range of architectures that do not have a ghc installed. On solaris8 I have ghc and I could build yhc without any problems. But now I need a non-native, bytecode version of yhc to be transported to the ghc-less architectures. How can I compile yhc using yhc to obtain the bytecode version? I basically expect the answer to be make # tp build yhc using ghc setenv YHC_BASE_PATH $PWD/inst setenv YHI $YHC_BASE_PATH/bin/yhi cd *somewhere* $YHI *options* *mainfile* Unfortunately I have not the slightest idea what to write for *somewhere* *options* and *mainfile* :-( Can somebody help me? Preferably I need the exact commands that work for the shell. Thanks a lot, Gabor PS: once I have the exact build steps I will do my best to contribute the needed stuff to the makefiles for this type of compilation.

Hello Guys, The first version of the .NET backend for YHC is working. It isn't stable yet but at least I managed to run some simple applications with it, using the compiled yhc-base package. The required compiler changes are quite small. I just had to add an additional compiler option which switches from the bytecode backend to the new backend. Everything else is clearly separated from the rest of the compiler. The .NET backend is using its own runtime library and requires some changes in the base package. I tend to release the backend as open source. Would you like to merge the new backend in the main compiler repository? Alternativelly I will have to keep my own copy repository. Cheers, Krasimir

YHC on debian/arm & Nokia 770 , YHC FFI compatibility for gtk2hs ?

Greetings from the SubArctic, I've acquired a Nokia 770 and would like to write and run Haskell apps on it. The Nokia 770 is a slightly modified debian/arm with 64mb ram and 128mb flash. I want gtk2hs for graphic apps, and I want small binaries so I can distribute apps I've written. That leaves out GHC for size, and nhc98 for lack of gtk2hs. I spoke to Duncan Coutts on IRC, he said that running gtk2hs with nhc98 was unlikely, but gtk2hs with YHC was likely. After reading about YHC some, I am particularly enthusiastic about the idea of tiny bytecode programs with a runtime written in C. Duncan said that the points needed to get gtk2hs working with YHC are: * eliminate use of -fglasgow-exts * get the gtkhs build system working with YHC * figure out if FFI calls will be different with YHC A look at http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~ndm/yhc/report.html implies that the FFI doesn't work at all. Is that correct? Are there any other obstacles in the way of getting gtk2hs working with YHC? Compiling Prelude.hs

Hello Guys, While I was playing with YHC, I tried to rebuild Prelude.hs. I saw that there is a prebuilt version of the entire base package, which is copied when I do: $ Makefile.bat lib I wonder how this bootstrapping version of base was built. When I tried to do this manually the compiler died with stack overflow. Is it because the compiler is tring to import Prelude while compiling Prelude? Krasimir

YHC build finished successfully, but install is not "fairly trivial"

Hello all, I just 'darcs got' the sources and compiled YHC on Linux (Ubuntu) last night. I got it to compile just fine with 'make' but on the install side of things I ran into a number of problems. I read on the wiki (YHC/Building) that > There currently isn't a 'make install', but it is fairly trivial: simply copy the contents of the > 'inst' directory into where everything should be installed. I didn't find this to be the case. I copied the 'inst' folder to '/usr/lib/yhc', but then (1) I had to set up an environment variable YHC_BASE_PATH to point there, (2) I had to symlink 'yhi' and 'yhc' to '/usr/bin'. That really wasn't that big of a deal. I ran YHC on a test Haskell script, called Main.hs: > module Main (main) where > > fac 0 = 1 > fac n | n > 0 = n * fac (n-1) > > main = print $ fac 30 and it succeeds. But, trying to run the .hbc file with yhi fails: -------- ERROR: couldn't find module named 'Data/Ratio' tried: Data/Ratio.hbc /usr/lib/yhc/lib/yhc/packages/yhc-base/1.0/Data/Ratio.hbc -------- In that directory, there exist a bunch of .hbc and .hi file pairs (Char, Array, List, Ix, Complex, Maybe, PackedString, _CharNumeric) , AND Ratio.hi, but no Ratio.hbc ..., (incidentally, /usr/lib/yhc/lib/yhc/packages/haskell98/1.0/Ratio.hbc DOES exist...) The question is, why does running my factorial program trigger a Data.Ratio error? I think it's an installation problem, and it's probably related to the fact that... ... I can't really get most of the test suite to run. Compiling

Hi, I'm relatively new to Linux (I avoid it like the plague), so I tried building Yhc on Linux. The first thing I did was darcs get, all nice and easy, if not particularly fast. Next thing I did was type make, and got a strange error message. A few minutes later I realised that the reason is because configure has not been run. Is it possible to detect this case, and ideally just run configure for the user, or at the very least give a helpful and friendly message telling them exactly what they need to do? I was very impressed that yhc and yhi both built nice and easily, although the YHC_BASE_PATH issue threw up its head, and since I have no idea how to set an environment variable, at that point I have to give up. Sensible defaults would be really nice. It should also be documented somewhere on the wiki. Thanks Neil
