I downloaded subversion from the website. According to my machine:
svn, version 1.4.2 (r22196) compiled Nov 8 2006, 11:18:53
You need to build it so subversion can pull repositorys over http. How you might do that, I've no idea. I've always built it through portage and have never had this problem. Andrew

I've managed to fix the problem and got yhc working finally! Thanks for all your help. Chris.
