#180: configure should warn if a declared licence file is missing ---------------------+------------------------------------------------------ Reporter: duncan | Owner: Type: defect | Status: new Priority: low | Milestone: Component: Cabal | Version: 1.2.2.0 Severity: normal | Keywords: Difficulty: normal | Ghcversion: 6.4.2 Platform: Linux | ---------------------+------------------------------------------------------ There are a few packages around which declare {{{ license-file: LICENSE }}} but then that LICENSE file actually does not exist. Currently we do not discover this until we try and install at which point we get the unhelpful error: {{{ setup: LICENCE: copyFile: does not exist (No such file or directory) }}} It would be much more helpful to users and developers alike if we warned in the configure step if the file was missing. This is partly a transitional issue, since older versions of Cabal did not install license files at all, so it never noticed. -- Ticket URL: <http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/hackage/ticket/180> Hackage <http://haskell.org/cabal/> Hackage: Cabal and related projects

[Hackage] #170: pkg-config uses a more general version scheme

#170: pkg-config uses a more general version scheme ---------------------+------------------------------------------------------ Reporter: duncan | Owner: Type: defect | Status: new Priority: low | Milestone: Component: Cabal | Version: 1.2.2.0 Severity: normal | Keywords: Difficulty: normal | Ghcversion: 6.4.2 Platform: Linux | ---------------------+------------------------------------------------------ From {{{HsOpenSSL.cabal}}} {{{ --PkgConfig-Depends: openssl >= 0.9.7l -- We really should use this instead of the configure -- script but Cabal 1.2.2.0 can't handle the weird version -- scheme of OpenSSL. }}} For example: {{{ $ pkg-config --modversion openssl 0.9.8f }}} Currently Cabal tries to map pkg-config versions to the standard {{{Version}}} type which only allows for a sequence of numbers. pkg-config uses just strings to represent package versions. It uses code lifted from rpm to compare version strings. See the {{{compare_versions}}} function in {{{pkg-gconfig-0.22/pkg.c}}} from http://pkgconfig.freedesktop.org/releases/pkg-config-0.22.tar.gz -- Ticket URL: <http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/hackage/ticket/170> Hackage <http://haskell.org/cabal/> Hackage: Cabal and related projects

[Hackage] #165: The ./configure configure hook should complain if ./configure does not exist

#165: The ./configure configure hook should complain if ./configure does not exist ---------------------+------------------------------------------------------ Reporter: guest | Owner: Type: defect | Status: new Priority: normal | Milestone: Component: Cabal | Version: 1.2.0 Severity: normal | Keywords: Difficulty: normal | Ghcversion: 6.4.2 Platform: Linux | ---------------------+------------------------------------------------------ We often have problems with people not running auto(re)conf before Setup configure, and things breaking later on. The hook that runs ./configure should fail if ./configure doesn't exist; it probably shouldn't give any suggestion on how to create it, as people will blindly follow the suggestion and one size probably won't fit all. This essentially depends on the proposals to split up hooks into smaller, composable parts. [Hackage] #167: cabal-install should treat package names case insenitively in the UI wherever possible

#167: cabal-install should treat package names case insenitively in the UI wherever possible ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- Reporter: duncan | Owner: Type: enhancement | Status: new Priority: normal | Milestone: Component: cabal-install | Version: 1.2.0 Severity: normal | Keywords: Difficulty: normal | Ghcversion: 6.4.2 Platform: Linux | ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- Currently saying {{{cabal list haxml}}} works fine and returns hits for {{{HaXml}}} which is good. The same does not apply when it comes to {{{cabal list haxml}}}. So what it should do is to look case-insnesitively for haxml. If the match is not exact case-sensitively and there are more than one packages matching case-insensitively then it should abort with a message listing the matches. This should not often happen since within any single HackageDB server, we check that packages names are unique case- insensitively but it's possible to get ambiguities if cabal-install has been configured to use multiple repos. -- Ticket URL: <http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/hackage/ticket/167> Hackage <http://haskell.org/cabal/> Hackage: Cabal and related projects

[Hackage] #168: Behaviour of cabal-install with respect to upgradeable packages is unexpected

#168: Behaviour of cabal-install with respect to upgradeable packages is unexpected ---------------------+------------------------------------------------------ Reporter: guest | Owner: Type: defect | Status: new Priority: normal | Milestone: Component: Cabal | Version: 1.2.0 Severity: normal | Keywords: Difficulty: normal | Ghcversion: 6.4.2 Platform: Linux | ---------------------+------------------------------------------------------ When an old version of a package is already installed, running cabal- install to install it should install the latest available version of the package, rather than complaining that the package is already installed. (Or at least interactively provide the option to do so.) Having it simply abort without doing anything is strange because in the most common case a user tries to install a package because they need it and do not already have it. If the package is already installed, that probably means that they do not have a recent enough version of the package. It would also make cabal-install more apt-like, which is probably a good thing, considering the obvious inspiration. -- Ticket URL: <http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/hackage/ticket/168> Hackage <http://haskell.org/cabal/> Hackage: Cabal and related projects

Adding an option to cabal-install
by jim burton 21 Dec '07

Hi, I was planning to make a small change to Fetch.hs to let it be used behind a proxy server, using the value of $http_proxy or $HTTP_PROXY where one of them exists -- hope that sounds OK? This is easy to do, but so that windows users can benefit it would be good to make this an option read from the config file and/or opts and I'm having a much harder time working out how to do that. I tried to mimic the way other options work but can't get it working. Can you point out why? Several of the functions below aren't expected to work properly but should allow this line to be read from .cabal/conf: http_proxy:http://proxy.server.com:80 But I get this: > $ ~/haskell/bin/cabal -v3 clean > Config file warning: Unrecognized stanza on line 5 > Configuration: > compiler: GHC > ... > http_proxy: Nothing Here are the main places that I thought I needed to make changes: -- added to Types.hs data Option = OptCompilerFlavor CompilerFlavor ... | OptHttpProxy ProxyInfo deriving (Eq,Show) data ConfigFlags = ConfigFlags { configCompiler :: CompilerFlavor, ... configHttpProxy :: Maybe ProxyInfo } deriving (Show) data ProxyInfo = ProxyInfo { proxyhost :: String , proxyport :: Int , proxyuser :: Maybe String , proxypass :: Maybe String } deriving (Show, Eq) -- added to Config.hs defaultConfigFlags = do ... return $ ConfigFlags { configCompiler = defaultCompiler ... , configHttpProxy = Nothing } configFieldDescrs :: [FieldDescr ConfigFlags] configFieldDescrs = configWriteFieldDescrs ++ map userInstallDirField installDirDescrs ++ map globalInstallDirField installDirDescrs ++ [proxyField] proxyField :: FieldDescr ConfigFlags proxyField = liftProxyField "http_proxy" (text . show) parseProxy configProxy (\p cfg -> cfg { configHttpProxy = p} ) {- This will need to be in IO, using getEnv to read the env vars by preference -} parseProxy :: ReadP r (Maybe ProxyInfo) parseProxy = do host <- munch1 (\c -> isAlphaNum c || c `elem` "_-.") char ':' port <- munch1 (\c -> isAlphaNum c) return $ Just (ProxyInfo host ((read port)::Int) Nothing Nothing) {- For consistency these functions should be in Distribution.ParseUtils -} configProxy :: ConfigFlags -> Maybe ProxyInfo configProxy = configHttpProxy liftProxyField :: String -> (a -> Doc) -> (ReadP a a) -> (b -> a) -> (a -> b -> b) -> FieldDescr b liftProxyField name showF readF get set = liftField get set $ field name showF readF ----------------------------------------------------- Thanks, Jim
