I should mention that I have library profiling enabled in my cabal-install config. So when a dependency claims to be hidden I usually just reinstall it and everything works. Here, I tried that and base showed up as a dependency (shouldn't I have the profiled version of base already?), and when I tried to cabal install base, I get a funny error. Transcript below (note that I've selected 1.6.0.2 from the version drop down, but my version is actually 1.6.0.3, but isn't in the list). My GHC version is also not in the lits. Package dependences for building versus linking

Cabal introduces unnecessary package dependences, which in one case causes a Cabal build to fail whereas ghc --make does not fail. I'm not sure whether this should be considered a bug in Cabal. I'm trying to Cabalize a program. The executable depends on a package that can be compiled (the GHC path), but not interpreted (the GHCi path). Some of my source files use this compile-only package, and other files use Template Haskell. TH code is passed to the interpreter. If I build using ghc --make, the TH interpreter loads only the packages needed by the current file. This works because the interpreter only runs for source files that use TH, and no file uses both TH and the compile-only package. If I build using Cabal, however, the TH interpreter attempts to load every package needed by the project, apparently because Cabal passes every package on the command line. Compilation fails because the compile-only package cannot be loaded. GHC bug #3550 adds a new -install-name option to GHC, to allow this to be done at build time. This patch modifies Cabal to pass the -install-name option when building dynamic libraries on Mac OS/X so they're created with the correct install location.
