Who is actually the administrator of this mailing list? I’ve seen it several times that text in mails on this list was prefixed with a `>` although it was not a quotation, which can be very confusing. Now I saw this even in one of my own mails: the `>` before “From what I remember” below is wrong. I have not put it there; so it must have been added somehow automatically. Could this please be stopped? I don’t want people to get confused regarding what I have and haven’t written. All the best, Wolfgang Am Di 21.07.2026 15:24 schrieb Wolfgang Jeltsch via ghc-devs:
Hi, Simon (Jakobi)!
Thanks for your clarifications. I don’t want to go further into all the details but rather comment on what’s maybe the central point here:
I don’t see programming as a mere exercise. It’s a key part of developing software.
I think that’s changing now. Sebastian’s comments on this were pretty spot-on IMHO.
From what I remember, Sebastian wrote that code generation done by machines will entirely replace programming done by humans. This is completely unrealistic. The set of tasks that can be automated using LLMs is small, and programming is not in this set, given that it fundamentally needs creativity and human judgement. Surely, there will be much effort to replace programming even more by “vibe-coding”, but this can only end in disaster.
If there was a trend to get rid of energy supply by building perpetual motion machines, I would definitely advise not to follow it, for a simple reason: there are no perpetual motion machines.
