Hi, I'm, analysing the IO-system of the GHC and need more information about it. More precisely: How switches the run-time-system between (normal) evaluation and performing of IO-actions? I read the rts-paper, but didn't find any information about this. Can somebody give a short review, or are ther any other papers available? --------------- David Sabel JWGU Frankfurt

Readline is now in a package on its own in the HEAD. i.e. our next major release will contain a completely separate readline package. The license status of the readline package itself is not clear; certainly if you statically link to readline your program is only distributable under the GPL. However, if you dynamically link against readline, then you could conceivably follow the Linux kernel attitude and not GPL your code (although some at the FSF disagree with this interpretation of the GPL). Currently, if you use package util but don't import Readline, you are not affected by the GPL. None of the libraries we distribute indirectly depends on Readline. Cheers, Simon

Hi I am trying to compile the meta-haskell-branch of ghc from cvs. I get the following error messages. Please help me with some hints. So this means any GHC code that uses package util (or data, which depends on it) must be distributed GPL. Would it be possible to isolate readline-using code in a separate package? I'm pretty sure I don't need readline functionality for what I'm doing, but I do need the "data" package... Currently I distribute the source code for my HBase library under LGPL. But now I'm getting this: ghc -package lang -package data Test.o libHBase.a -o Test ld: can't locate file for: -lreadline It turns out data depends on util, which has this: extra_libraries = ["HSutil_cbits", "readline", "curses"], Does Apple provide a readline, or do I need to get one from somewhere? Bug in GHC for MacOSX 10.2?

Now I have to do "cd ..; ghci -i. Test.Foo" instead. I'm sceptical about this feature. As Hal mentioned, you can always do 'ghci -i.. Foo.hs', but even that is slightly dodgy because then you have two overlapping directories on the import path. The reason you can use Foo.hs is because it is a root module, and root modules are allowed to have filenames which differ from their module names. Suppose you try to refer to it as simply "Foo", making sure we're in a different directory entirely: $ cd <elsewhere>; ghci -i<path>/Test Foo ... <path>/Test/Foo.hs: file name does not match module name `Foo' The only "right" way to use a hierarchical module is from the root of the tree.
