Hi, I have just built and installed ghc-6.8.2 on my linux box but I can't find the network package. Has it been moved or left out? Kind regards, Chris.

`show' in ghci dialogue
by Serge D. Mechveliani 12 Jan '08

12 Jan '08

People, I have a question about usage of `show' in the GHCi dialogue system. I introduce my user class DShow, trying to improve the class Show of Haskell-98. For example, I program --------------------------- class DShow a where dShow :: ShowOptions -> a -> String ... main = let listOfListPairs = [ ([1,2,3], [] ), ([4,5,6], [7] ), ([9,8,0], [0,0,0]) ] :: [ ([Int], [Int]) ] opts = ShowOptions {verbosity = 2, listSepator = ", \n\n", fieldSeparator = ", \n"} in putStr (dShow opts listOfListPairs) --------------------------- Then, the command ./Main outputs ----------------------- [([1, 2, 3], []), ([4, 5, 6], [7]), ([9, 8, 0], [0, 0, 0])] ----------------------- This way of the output format control by dShow and ShowOptions is my goal. But the command > main in the ghci interpreter outputs something like this: "[([1, 2, 3), []),\n\n([4, 5, 6), [7]),\n\n([9, 8, 0],\n\n[0, 0, 0])]" How can the user force ghci to output the same output format as in the case of ./Main (how to interprete '\n') ? 1. If we give to the interpreter the line > listOfListPairs , then the ghci dialogue system does interprete the NewLine characters on output as needed -- only for the value of (show listOfListPairs). And I need it for the value of (dShow opts listOfListPairs). Is there any way to substitute a user function instead of `show' in the ghci output? (and dShow has additional argument ...). 2. Which function outputs a string in the ghci dialogue system? Can the user make this function to interprete the NewLine character in the argument string? Thank you in advance for your explanation. ----------------- Serge Mechveliani mechvel(a)botik.ru

Any Debian Etch packages for GHC 6.8.2?
by Wagner Ferenc 12 Jan '08

12 Jan '08

Hi, speaking of binary dists, does anybody know of some Debian Etch packages of GHC 6.8.2? If nothing else is available, I'm ready to repackage a .tar.gz as a .deb, but I wonder if there's anything better available already... -- Thanks, Feri.

ghc 6.6.1 -optl bug?
by Bulat Ziganshin 11 Jan '08

11 Jan '08

Hello GHC, sorry, i'm still user of 6.6.1 version the following command: ghc --make .... -optl-s strips the executable while the following command ghc --make .... -optl--strip-all has no effect. i made some experiments and it seems that options starting with "--" are not sent to ld at all (you can write -optl--unexisting-option but not -optl-#) -- Best regards, Bulat mailto:Bulat.Ziganshin@gmail.com

GHC 6.8.1 on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
by Manuel M T Chakravarty 11 Jan '08

11 Jan '08

A full binary distribution of GHC 6.8.1 for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is available from http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~chak/haskell/ghc-6.8.1-i386-apple-darwin.tar.bz2 To use it, you need two other pieces of software installed: Xcode 3.0 -- as available from the Leopard upgrade/install DVD or developer.apple.com readline 5.2 -- preferably installed via macports in /opt/local Moreover, if you have the GMP.framework installed (a leftover from 10.4), remove it first. To install, follow the instructions at http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/users_guide/installing-bin-dist… Happy Haskell Hacking! Manuel -=- GHC on Mac OS X 10.5 mini FAQ: * When trying to compile GHC, I get a segv on Float.lhs (of the base package is compiled). Why? AFAIK this only happens if the GHC you try to bootstrap with is too old (eg, 6.6). * With the binary distribution why do I get a link error complaining about "_environ"? You still have the GMP framework installed. It was linked against an old libc, which causes the error. Remove the GMP framework. * What GMP library is used? GHC 6.8.1 includes an embedded GMP library (ie, it's bundled with the source). It is compiled as a static library and placed into the GHC install tree.

darcs patch: [PROOF OF CONCEPT] build readline package with libedit

The only way to know for sure is to try it out! Attached is a proof-of-concept patch which adds the --with-libedit flag to the readline package's autoconf scripts. * PROOF OF CONCEPT: add --with-libedit flag to allow building a minimal version of the library against libedit. M ./HsReadline_cbits.c +2 M ./System/Console/Readline.hsc -1 +50 M ./aclocal.m4 +6 M ./configure.ac -4 +10 With this patch (and a small, unrelated hack to statically link gmp) I was able to build a version of ghc which only depends on the dynamic libraries installed on OS X 10.4 by default: $ otool -L ghc-6.9.20071221 ghc-6.9.20071221: /usr/lib/libedit.2.dylib (compatibility version 2.0.0, current version 2.0.0) /usr/lib/libncurses.5.4.dylib (compatibility version 5.4.0, current version 5.4.0) /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 88.3.9) I played around with completion of filenames, modules, identifiers and flags in ghci, and it all seems to be working fine. Best, -Judah

bindist for Intel MacOS X 10.4 (Tiger) with static libs
by Christian Maeder 09 Jan '08

09 Jan '08

Hi, I've succeeded in building a binary distribution that uses static libraries for gmp and readline. libreadline.a, libncurses.a and libgmp.a with corresponding header files are included. (For license issues ask someone else.) Linking is done using the flag -search_paths_first. Frameworks or dylibs for gmp or readline are no longer required and are not used when linking binaries. http://www.dfki.de/sks/hets/intel-mac/versions/ghc-6.8.2-i386-apple-darwin-… Other static libraries are compatible with those from http://www.dfki.de/sks/hets/intel-mac/versions/ghc-6.8.2-i386-apple-darwin.… (in fact HSreadline-1.0.1.0 was created this way) Cheers Christian P.S. ranlib during installation is actually not needed on Intel Macs (only for PPC)

Hi, I found the RHEL4 souce and binary RPMs from http://forte-intl.com/~ronald/haskell/ghc/rhel4/, however, I do not have root privileges on the machine and therefore the installation attempts all failed (for binary RPM, it says can't create transaction lock /var/lock/rpm/transaction, for source RPM, it says cannot write to %sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES). Also, I currently have no access to any machine on which there is a working ghc installation so I can't even try the nonregisterised bootstrapping procedure. What should I try now? Thanks!
