Haddocumentation of 6.8.1
by Daniel Fischer 07 Jan '08

07 Jan '08

Yesterday, doing runghc ./Setup.hs haddock in zlib.0.4.0.1, I noticed that no Haddock docs have been built for my 6.8.1. I followed the usual building steps, which worked with previous GHCs, set XMLDocWays=html, then ./configure make make install make install-docs No library docs (users guide and Cabal manual are fine). I looked around in a couple of Makefiles, tried 'make doc' in libraries, that built docs, but Haddock couldn't make any cross-package links and libraries/index.html links to package/Package-Name.html, which doesn't exist, because it's package/dist/doc/html/package/Package-Name.html. Question 1: How do I get proper library documentation? Question 2: When I build a package via Cabal, is there a way to merge the documentation into the installed library docs (and if yes, how do I do it)? Feature request: Could the README in future please contain information on how to build library documentation properly? Thanks, Daniel

Redefining built in syntax
by Neil Mitchell 05 Jan '08

05 Jan '08

Hi, I'm getting errors such as: C:/Documents/Uni/packages/base/GHC/Base.lhs:270:12: Illegal binding of built-in syntax: [] When I try and compile GHC/Base.lhs using the GHC API. Is there some flag I can pass to allow the rebinding of built in syntax? Thanks Neil

there isn't any difference, is there, with unboxed tuples?
by Isaac Dupree 05 Jan '08

05 Jan '08

--> unboxed types in function results are automatically "lifted"... or what was the term meaning they could be _|_, failing to terminate, (because of the function-ness)? --> unboxed tuples are specially restricted to be only allowed, among useful places, in function results. Therefore (... -> ( a, b, c ) ) and (... -> (# a, b, c #)) are identical, assuming both are kind-correct (identical in terms of optimization and semantics, not type equality, of course). Is that right? If so, there's never an excuse to use unboxed tuples except to contain unboxed values (because then you don't have the choice of using boxed tuples, which can only contain boxed values of kind *). ~Isaac

odd GHC 6.8.2 compile failure
by Isaac Dupree 04 Jan '08

04 Jan '08

linking the compiled stage2 failed when bootstrapping from 6.6.1, with --prefix=$HOME . It's odd because I previously had a 6.8.2 (official x86 Linux bin-dist) installed as root (it's gone now), and I still have a bunch of cabal/hackage packages installed in $HOME that were compiled by that 6.8.2 (in addition to a few things installed by `cabal install` in ~/.cabal/). Do you think that could be confusing the build process, and if it is, is that a bug - and a bug in what? ... make[3]: Leaving directory `/Users/me/programming/cabalz/NotActuallyCabalButMaybeShouldBe/ghc-6.8.2/compiler' make -f Makefile.ghcbin -wr HS_PROG=stage2/ghc-6.8.2 stage2/ghc-6.8.2 make[3]: Entering directory `/Users/me/programming/cabalz/NotActuallyCabalButMaybeShouldBe/ghc-6.8.2/compiler' ../compiler/stage1/ghc-inplace -H16m -O -package ghc -Istage2 -cpp -fglasgow-exts -fno-generics -Rghc-timing -I. -IcodeGen -InativeGen -Iparser -Rghc-timing -DGHCI -threaded -fforce-recomp -c main/Main.hs -o stage2/main/Main.o -ohi stage2/main/Main.hi <<ghc: 293758172 bytes, 332 GCs, 8590865/18490044 avg/max bytes residency (5 samples), 42M in use, 0.00 INIT (0.00 elapsed), 0.83 MUT (0.91 elapsed), 0.40 GC (0.43 elapsed) :ghc>> ../compiler/stage1/ghc-inplace -o stage2/ghc-6.8.2 -H16m -O -package ghc -Istage2 -cpp -fglasgow-exts -fno-generics -Rghc-timing -I. -IcodeGen -InativeGen -Iparser -Rghc-timing -DGHCI -threaded -fforce-recomp stage2/main/Main.o /Users/me/HOME/lib/Cabal-1.2.3.0/ghc-6.8.2/libHSCabal-1.2.3.0.a(InstalledPackageInfo.o): In function `sEZA_info': (.text+0x177c4): undefined reference to `prettyzm1zi0zi0zi0_TextziPrettyPrintziHughesPJ_lvl21_closure' /Users/me/HOME/lib/Cabal-1.2.3.0/ghc-6.8.2/libHSCabal-1.2.3.0.a(InstalledPackageInfo.o): In function `sEZA_info': (.text+0x177cb): undefined reference to `prettyzm1zi0zi0zi0_TextziPrettyPrintziHughesPJ_lvl22_closure' /Users/me/HOME/lib/Cabal-1.2.3.0/ghc-6.8.2/libHSCabal-1.2.3.0.a(InstalledPackageInfo.o): In function `sF0s_info': (.text+0x17974): undefined reference to `prettyzm1zi0zi0zi0_TextziPrettyPrintziHughesPJ_lvl21_closure' /Users/me/HOME/lib/Cabal-1.2.3.0/ghc-6.8.2/libHSCabal-1.2.3.0.a(InstalledPackageInfo.o): In function `sF0s_info': (.text+0x1797b): undefined reference to `prettyzm1zi0zi0zi0_TextziPrettyPrintziHughesPJ_lvl22_closure' /Users/me/HOME/lib/Cabal-1.2.3.0/ghc-6.8.2/libHSCabal-1.2.3.0.a(Package.o): In function `shme_info': (.text+0x100d): undefined reference to `base_DataziList_zdsintersperse_info' /Users/me/HOME/lib/Cabal-1.2.3.0/ghc-6.8.2/libHSCabal-1.2.3.0.a(ParseUtils.o): In function `swtq_info': (.text+0xa879): undefined reference to `base_DataziList_zdsintersperse_info' /Users/me/HOME/lib/Cabal-1.2.3.0/ghc-6.8.2/libHSCabal-1.2.3.0.a(ParseUtils.o): In function `swtC_info': (.text+0xa999): undefined reference to `base_DataziList_zdsintersperse_info' /Users/me/HOME/lib/Cabal-1.2.3.0/ghc-6.8.2/libHSCabal-1.2.3.0.a(Version.o): In function `r7DH_info': (.text+0x27d7): undefined reference to `base_TextziParserCombinatorsziReadP_zdschoice_info' /Users/me/HOME/lib/Cabal-1.2.3.0/ghc-6.8.2/libHSCabal-1.2.3.0.a(Version.o): In function `r7DH_srt': (.data+0x454): undefined reference to `base_TextziParserCombinatorsziReadP_zdschoice_closure' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status <<ghc: 20856200 bytes, 4 GCs, 128260/128260 avg/max bytes residency (1 samples), 16M in use, 0.00 INIT (0.00 elapsed), 0.02 MUT (5.00 elapsed), 0.01 GC (0.02 elapsed) :ghc>> make[3]: *** [stage2/ghc-6.8.2] Error 1 make[3]: Leaving directory `/Users/me/programming/cabalz/NotActuallyCabalButMaybeShouldBe/ghc-6.8.2/compiler' make[2]: *** [stage2/ghc-6.8.2] Error 2 make[2]: Leaving directory `/Users/me/programming/cabalz/NotActuallyCabalButMaybeShouldBe/ghc-6.8.2/compiler' make[1]: *** [stage2] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/Users/me/programming/cabalz/NotActuallyCabalButMaybeShouldBe/ghc-6.8.2' make: *** [bootstrap2] Error 2 ~Isaac

Is GHC.Base deliberately hidden?
by Adrian Hey 04 Jan '08

04 Jan '08

Hello, Why is it that the haddock docs supplied with GHC omit this module and its exports? Is it because we're not supposed to use them? I'm thinking of the compareInt# function in particular, which I use quite a lot. Thanks -- Adrian Hey

Re: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/dist/mac_frameworks/GNUreadline-framework.zip
by Christian Maeder 04 Jan '08

(Let's discuss this openly on glasgow-haskell-users) I'm not happy about this framework hick-hack either. I've only pushed it, because we needed a readline solution on macs. The alternative is to use static linking of gmp (as suggested by chak) _and_ readline (version 5), so that user programs are also statically linked with these libs. Nobody supplied a binary distribution so far, though. I only supplied the binary distributions that I (naively) made anyway. Regarding this actual GNUreadline-framework.zip replacement, this is harmless and seems to matter only for those who build ghc with frameworks (as only the inclusion of header files changed) In any case we should strive to fix the frameworks issues _and_ add support for static linking of gmp, readline and possibly other libs (plus license issues). Re: Unrecognized -F flag
by Christian Maeder 04 Jan '08

Thanks, for your report. It was my fault. I should not have modified utils/hsc2hs/Main.hs as described in the following links. http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.haskell.glasgow.user/13583 http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/1395 A fix is to replace your file <prefix>/lib/ghc-6.8.2/hsc2hs-bin with a new one that you can download from: http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/agbkb/forschung/formal_methods/CoFI/het… (635468 Bytes) a ppc version from: http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/agbkb/forschung/formal_methods/CoFI/het… (800044 Bytes) <prefix> above is /usr/local (or the one you've configured with) Does someone have a cute command to easily update this file in a binary distribution (without unpacking and repacking), so that Ian can replaced my binary-dists (replacing hsc2hs-bin manually is a bit of a pain). <.> defined in GHC and System.FilePath
by Neil Mitchell 04 Jan '08

Hi The GHC API uses the <.> operator, which clashes with System.FilePath. Possibly this might want renaming to something else - I have absolutely no idea what it does! Prelude> :m GHC Prelude GHC> :i <.> (<.>) :: HsWrapper -> HsWrapper -> HsWrapper -- Defined in HsBinds Thanks Neil

Readline for Windows in the FAQ
by Walt Rorie-Baety 03 Jan '08

03 Jan '08

Maybe I'm just too new at this, but the GCH FAQ entry for readline in GHCi is confusing for me. Especially since it ends with the sentence "Instructions for GHC 6.2.2. are here." However, as the quote goes, "there's no 'here' here." - the location of the instructions are missing. Could someone please clue me in to what I'm missing? That way, I could edit the Wiki page, to clue in others better. -- This signature intentionally left blank
