[slightly OT] ghc-6.6.1 on OpenBSD/i386: internal error (Storage.c)

Hi, I'm currently working on updating the GHC port to 6.6.1 for OpenBSD, and when I run the testsuite (ghc-regress), all test cases for the way "threaded1", i.e. debug + threaded bail out with an assertion failure: Blocks: 132 live + 123 free = 255 total (508 around) conc010: internal error: ASSERTION FAILED: file Storage.c, line 1174 The numbers vary slightly, but there's always a total of 255 and 508 blocks around, except for one test case (con012), where there are a total of 763 blocks (1016 around). What puzzles me a little bit is the fact that this does *not* happen on amd64 (aka x86_64) but only on i386 so far. So does this ring a bell for anyone? You have easy access to the data decls: In a ModuleInfo is a TypeEnv. The range of the type env (gotten with typeEnvElts) are TyThings. A TyThing can be a Id a Class a TyCon a DataCon So just pull out those TyCons and away you go! (Lots of accessor functions for TyCons in module TyCon.) The Ids are the variables declared in the module, and they each have a type (use idType). In exchange, would you like to document what you have learned? Replacing select() in the non-threaded RTS?

I notice that select is a bit of a bottleneck in the non-threaded RTS once lots of sockets are in play. Between kernel and userspace, many a cycle are wasted once we go past a few hundred clients. On some operating systems, the fixed nature of fd_set imposes a surprisingly low ceiling on the maximum number of concurrently open file descriptors. I gather there's some kind of longish-term plan to build a more pluggable RTS, but it seems like a nearer-term solution could be implemented relatively cheaply, and wouldn't conflict with the ultimate goal. Would the GHC team be interested in receiving a patch that replaced select, where possible, with an operating system's native, and hopefully faster, event wait mechanism? <b

GHC.Prim problem

Hello, I've had a problem with GHC.Prim when compiling the darcs HEAD lately. How to create a GHC binary bundle?

Hello all, I've been trying to find documentation on how to create GHC binary bundles myself without success so far. I've been browsing the GHC website and found documents on how to handle various situations such as porting GHC to an unsupported platform, or how to build GHC from a binary bundle, but couldn't find anything related to the creation of those binary bundles. I've also encountered many broken links on the GHC website which didn't make things easier :-). To be more precise, I want to know how to create the ghc-$version-$arch-boot.tar.bz2 file to redistribute to users so that they can build GHC easily, and that on a platform that already has a working (but older) GHC installation. So far, I've been able to find out that I want to use the binary-dist make target, and that this requires me to put BIN_DIST=1 in mk/build.mk. Other than that, I'm pretty much lost. If I just missed some document, I'd be happy to get redirected to it; if not, some explanations on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Maxime

isSpace is too slow

Hi, I'm running a particular benchmark which calls isSpace a lot (basically wc -w). There are three ways to do the underlying space comparison - using the Haskell Data.Char.isSpace, using the C isspace, or using the C iswspace: isspace: 0.375 iswspace: 0.400 Char.isSpace: 0.672 Any chance someone could speed this up? Perhaps just replacing isSpace with a direct call to iswspace? On the particular benchmark I'm doing, C is 4 times faster than GHC - if isSpace was improved this would only be twice as slow. Use of MutableByteArray in GHC/Conc.lhs ?

Hi, Here is a question about a non-standard build from a first-timer ... I am slowly making progress, in a drunken walk kind of way, building GHC 6.7.20070518 (the one from the LambdaVM tree). Whilst most of my problems can be side stepped by tweaking the configure options and my libraries, I am puzzled by the error below. Why is MutableByteArray being used? Isn't it deprecated? Its appearance does sit inside #ifdef mingw32_HOST_OS so maybe it hasn't been noticed. Avoiding CAF's

Hi, I'm trying to avoid CAF's being created, and I was wondering how is the best way to do it with GHC. For example: f = .... Can I attach {-# INLINE #-} to f, and expect the CAF to be removed that way? Is there any NOCAF annotation. I can always f _, then change the callers to f () - if I'm doing that what is the most efficient fake argument, and should I annotate f in any way? If the dummy argument isn't used, is GHC going to float the let outside and re-CAF it? The next example is: foreign import ccall safe "stdio.h getchar" getchar2 :: CInt Can I stop this being CAF'd in any way? I'm working at a very low level here, so any hacky things with big disclaimers are still appreciated. Thanks Neil
