How to create a GHC binary bundle?
by Maxime Henrion 31 May '07

31 May '07

Hello all, I've been trying to find documentation on how to create GHC binary bundles myself without success so far. I've been browsing the GHC website and found documents on how to handle various situations such as porting GHC to an unsupported platform, or how to build GHC from a binary bundle, but couldn't find anything related to the creation of those binary bundles. I've also encountered many broken links on the GHC website which didn't make things easier :-). To be more precise, I want to know how to create the ghc-$version-$arch-boot.tar.bz2 file to redistribute to users so that they can build GHC easily, and that on a platform that already has a working (but older) GHC installation. So far, I've been able to find out that I want to use the binary-dist make target, and that this requires me to put BIN_DIST=1 in mk/build.mk. Other than that, I'm pretty much lost. If I just missed some document, I'd be happy to get redirected to it; if not, some explanations on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Maxime

FW: GHC as a library
by Simon Peyton-Jones 30 May '07

Good questions. Fwding to GHC users, to get myself out of the inner loop Simon -----Original Message----- From: Kenny Zhuo Ming Lu [mailto:luzm@comp.nus.edu.sg] Sent: 30 May 2007 12:44 To: Simon Peyton-Jones Subject: GHC as a library Dear Simon, I would like to bother you with some questions regarding GHC-as-a-library. I am currently planning to use/call GHC to infer/typecheck a given haskell module my project. I've been following the examples (in particular, the interactive evaluator) in http://haskell.org/haskellwiki/GHC/As_a_library In the following program I managed to parse and type check the given Haskell module, (Test.hs) using the call GHC.checkModule function. \begin{code} main = do session <- GHC.newSession GHC.JustTypecheck (Just "Test.hs") dflags1 <- GHC.getSessionDynFlags session (dflags2, packageIds) <- Packages.initPackages dflags1 GHC.setSessionDynFlags session dflags2{GHC.hscTarget=GHC.HscNothing} let name = "Test.hs" target <- GHC.guessTarget name Nothing GHC.addTarget session target GHC.load session GHC.LoadAllTargets let preludeModule = GHC.mkModule (PackageConfig.stringToPackageId "base") (GHC.mkModuleName "Prelude") GHC.setContext session [] [preludeModule] m_checkedModule <- GHC.checkModule session (GHC.mkModuleName "Test") ... \end{code} I am hoping to retrieve the inferred types of the declared Ids in Test.hs At this stage, what I obtain is a value of type Maybe CheckedModule. Then I looked into the definition of CheckedModule, \begin{code} data CheckedModule = CheckedModule { parsedSource :: ParsedSource, renamedSource :: Maybe RenamedSource, typecheckedSource :: Maybe TypecheckedSource, checkedModuleInfo :: Maybe ModuleInfo } \end{code} I attempted to look inside two of them, \begin{code} typecheckedSource :: Maybe TypecheckedSource, checkedModuleInfo :: Maybe ModuleInfo \end{code} In typecheckedSource, I can only access the function definitions with type annotations, but not the data type declaration. In checkedModuleInfo, I can only access the "Names" of the exported entities, and but not their (inferred) types are not present. So my question is, "Where I can access the inferred types?" Could you please advice? Thanks you very much. Best Regards, Kenny

isSpace is too slow
by Neil Mitchell 27 May '07

27 May '07

Hi, I'm running a particular benchmark which calls isSpace a lot (basically wc -w). There are three ways to do the underlying space comparison - using the Haskell Data.Char.isSpace, using the C isspace, or using the C iswspace: isspace: 0.375 iswspace: 0.400 Char.isSpace: 0.672 Any chance someone could speed this up? Perhaps just replacing isSpace with a direct call to iswspace? On the particular benchmark I'm doing, C is 4 times faster than GHC - if isSpace was improved this would only be twice as slow. Thanks Neil

Use of MutableByteArray in GHC/Conc.lhs ?
by Mark Wassell 27 May '07

27 May '07

Hi, Here is a question about a non-standard build from a first-timer ... I am slowly making progress, in a drunken walk kind of way, building GHC 6.7.20070518 (the one from the LambdaVM tree). Whilst most of my problems can be side stepped by tweaking the configure options and my libraries, I am puzzled by the error below. Why is MutableByteArray being used? Isn't it deprecated? Its appearance does sit inside #ifdef mingw32_HOST_OS so maybe it hasn't been noticed. Mark ./configure --enable-java --build=i386-unknown-mingw32 --with-gcc=c:/software/mingw/bin/gcc --with-ld=c:/software/mingw/bin/ld.exe <snip> ../../compiler/ghc-inplace -H16m -O -fglasgow-exts -cpp -Iinclude -"#include" HsBase.h -funbox-strict-fields -package-name base-2.0 -O -Rghc-timing -fgenerics -fgenerics -c GHC/Conc.lhs -o GHC/Conc.o -ohi GHC/Conc.hi GHC/Conc.lhs:607:43: Not in scope: type constructor or class `MutableByteArray#' GHC/Conc.lhs:609:33: Not in scope: `byteArrayContents#' GHC/Conc.lhs:611:44: Not in scope: type constructor or class `MutableByteArray#'

Avoiding CAF's
by Neil Mitchell 24 May '07

24 May '07

Hi, I'm trying to avoid CAF's being created, and I was wondering how is the best way to do it with GHC. For example: f = .... Can I attach {-# INLINE #-} to f, and expect the CAF to be removed that way? Is there any NOCAF annotation. I can always f _, then change the callers to f () - if I'm doing that what is the most efficient fake argument, and should I annotate f in any way? If the dummy argument isn't used, is GHC going to float the let outside and re-CAF it? The next example is: foreign import ccall safe "stdio.h getchar" getchar2 :: CInt Can I stop this being CAF'd in any way? I'm working at a very low level here, so any hacky things with big disclaimers are still appreciated. Thanks Neil

GHC 6.7 on OS X - Readline error
by Philip Weaver 24 May '07

24 May '07

Hello all, My first email to this list, so I apologize if I don't ask my question appropriately... I have GHC 6.6 installed on an Intel Mac (Tiger 10.4), with the readline package installed and System.Console.Readline module working fine. However, when I try to build GHC 6.7 from source (I have tried many different nightly releases, and I have downloaded the extra-lib tarball as well), I always get an error message like this: ghci/InteractiveUI.hs:69:7: Could not find module `System.Console.Readline': Use -v to see a list of the files searched for. <<ghc: 304609140 bytes, 46 GCs, 4250800/9484772 avg/max bytes residency (4 samples), 26M in use, 0.01 INIT (0.00 elapsed), 0.66 MUT (6.89 elapsed), 0.10 GC (0.11 elapsed) :ghc>> make[2]: *** [depend] Error 1 make[1]: *** [stage2] Error 2 make: *** [bootstrap2] Error 2 I could not find any information about this on google, so I am posting here. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks! Here's some more information if you need it. Feature request/help: evaluating template haskell at runtime
by Rene de Visser 23 May '07

23 May '07

Hello, I am attempting some genetic programming in Haskell. Rather than defining my own data type for programs and writing my own interpreter, I want to use the template haskell expression data types and evaluate them with the rts's byte code interpreter. This gives me a nice fast interpreter that provides the statistics that I want. I could pretty print the template haskell and then execute the result string using the GHC module or hs-plugins, but I would like to save the pretty printing and parsing as normally the program generation time is important by GP. I have being looking at module TcSplice. I see that I need to run the TH expression through function convertToHsExpr, but after that I am stuck. This produces LHsExpr RdrName and I need to get CoreSyn.CoreExpr. What functions to use? dsLExpr :: LHsExpr Id -> DsM CoreSyn.CoreExpr seems one important step, but I haven't figured out how to get from LHtsExpr RdrName to LHsExpr Id. It would be nice to have standard GHC functionality to have the ability to compile and evaluate template haskell at runtime using the GHC library. Rene.

ghc-6.6.1 RPM packages for i386 and x86_64 architectures on RHEL 4 and 5
by Ronald Cole 23 May '07

23 May '07

Hello group, Starting with Jens Peterson's packages for Fedora Core, I have built up the latest GHC RPMs for i386 and x86_64 on both RHEL4 and RHEL5. You can check them out at <http://forte-intl.com/~ronald/haskell/ghc/>. It was a fairly straightforward job due in large part to the very nice spec file written by Jens. Please add them to the Distribution Packages page at haskell.org/ghc. Thank you! Ronald Cole

Hello, The following happened to Johannes Waldmann as trying to run yi, which embeds the GHC api to dynamically load code. > waldmann@afa:~> yi > yi: can't load .so/.DLL for: pthread (/usr/lib/libpthread.so: invalid > ELF header) The error doesn't happen on my system (ubuntu feisty); despite my having the exact same /usr/lib/libpthread.so Does anyone have a clue?
