segfault with heap profiling.
by David Roundy 20 Sep '03

I've been getting a segfault whenever I try to run my program with +RTS -hc (having compiled with profiling enabled). Any idea what might cause this, or how I might track it down? I am using ghc 6.0.1, and see this problem on both linux (debian testing) and macos X. On macos X the crash log looks like it's crashing in heapCensusChain. My program uses ForeignPtrs quite a bit, so my only (rather weak) theory is that perhaps the profiler is trying to look at the contents of my ForeignPtrs? In a sort of related question, is there any way I can make the heap size decrease? In my test case, the memory usage peaks pretty early, and then it keeps running for another few hours. It would be nice if it could shrink the heap again to release swap. And actually, even though according to +RTS -Sstderr my live memory usage drops, the heap size (as seen by top) keeps going up (a megabyte every second or so) until the process gets killed because it's eaten up all the swap and memory. :( I suspect the problem may be in the allocation I'm doing via ForeignPtrs, but I'm not sure how to track anything down without profiling working. Any suggestions would be appreciated. -- David Roundy http://www.abridgegame.org

Would it not be better to have control over exactly where these options apply, could you not have: {-# OPTIONS fallow-overlapping-instances=true #-} ... some code ... {-# OPTIONS -fallow-overlapping-instances=false #-} ... more code ... So you can ensure instances you don't want overlapping cannot? Regards, Keean.

Good Day, With warm heart I offer my friendship, and my greetings, and I hope this letter meets you in good time. It will be surprising to you to receive this proposal from me since you do not know me personally. However, I am sincerely seeking your confidence in this transaction, which I propose with my free mind and as a person of integrity. My name is Wolny Olkusz, the first son of Paul Olkusz, of the most popular black farmer from Zimbabwe, murdered in the land dispute in my country. As led by my instict, I decided to contact you through email, after searching for contacts via the internet, as it is the only means I can contact anybody since I am cutting off ties with Zimbabwe for security and safety reasons. However, I apologize if this is not acceptable to you. The purpose of this letter is to seek your most needed assistance in a business venture. Due to the land and political problems in Zimbabwe, as a result of President Robert Mugabe's introduction of new Land Act Reform wholly affecting the rich white farmers and the few rich black farmers, and his desire to hold on to power for life, my father for saw the danger that came in Zimbabwe. Before he was murdered, he withdrew all of our business foreign accounts in dollars and sold up our shares in major companies. We then went to SOUTH AFRICA to deposit the sum of US$14.5 million (Fourteen million, Five Hundred thousand US dollars), in a private security company. This money was deposited with this Private Security company for safety and security reasons, and was to be used for the purchase of land, new machines and chemicals establishment of new farms in Europe. President Mugabe's support for the violent Zimbabwean war veterans and some lunatics in the society, led to the murder of my beloved father and other innocent lives. I was continually threatened to abandon my inheritance from my father after he was murdered. I resited for a while, but when the danger became unbearable, and I survived two murder attempts, I fled Zimbabwe. I am currently staying in the Holland where I am seeking political asylum. In fact my decision to come here to seek asylum, is because the security company from South Africa, has a branch holland and they have moved the deposit from their office in Johannesburg down here. I need to transfer this money to an account and invest part of the money. Since the law of Netherland prohibits a refugee (asylum seeker) to open any bank account or to be involved in any financial transaction, this is why I am seeking a genuine and reliable partner, whose account this money can be transferred, hence this proposal to you.You have to understand that this decision taken by me entrusts my future and in your hands, as a result of the safe keeping of this money. If you accept to assist me, all I want you to do for me, is to assist with arrangements to claim the deposit from the security company from their office in Netherlands, as it has now been transfered from Johannesburg, South Africa to their branch here. The company will be legally informed of you representing me. For your assistance, I have two options for you. Firstly you can choose to have 10% of the money for your assistance, and helping me open an account for the money to be deposited here, or you can go into partnership with me for the proper profitable investment of the money in your country. Whichever the option you want, please to notify me in your reply. I have also set aside 1%($145,000,00) of this money for all kinds of expenses that come our way in the process of this transaction, and 4% ($580,000,00) for Charity donation. If you prefer to accept the 10or assisting with opening an account, then 85%will be left in the account here for me. Please, I want you maintain the absolute secrecy for the purpose of this transaction. I look forward to your reply and co-operation, and I thank you in advance as I anticipate your co-operation.You can reach me on my direct line which is 31-630-854-650 or via email, wolny_olkusz(a)latinmail.com Sincerely, Wolny Olkusz.

A technical point: matching line comments is a bit more tricky than that. Eg. GHC's lexer uses the following regular expression: "--"\-* ([^$symbol] .*)? Actually the easy way to do this would be to invoke the lexer to look for the OPTIONS pragma. I think we can now do this with the new lexer - I'll look into it. Cheers, Simon

One concrete reason for this is that the code which looks for '{-# OPTIONS' isn't the full Haskell lexer, so it doesn't understand comments. We could make it understand comments, but that adds extra complication (nested comments, maximal munch for '--' comments, etc.). Cheers, Simon

Adding -v shouldn't make any difference! Try using a debugging version of the RTS (see mk/config.mk for instructions). Is the build attempting to use an already-installed copy of GMP, or is it building the one in the tree? > 3) Simon M. : For the time beeing this is the patch you can integrate > safely into the CVS repository . Placement of OPTION pragmas

A very small nitpick: > OPTIONS pragmas are only looked for at the top of your source files, > upto the first (non-literate,non-empty) line not containing OPTIONS. Why doesn't "non-empty" include comment-only lines? I usually start source files with the equivalent of: ----------------------------------------------- -*- mode: Haskell -*- -- -- -- -- My Program -- -- -- -- Description: This program does this and that -- -- -- -- Author: Me -- -- Copyright (C) 2003 By Me -- -- -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ and currently {-# OPTIONS ... #-} must be before the header... Dear Sir. May I seek your indulgence to introduce my humble self. I am Kokor Mobutu, the son of the late Zaire Republic President, Mobutu Sese Seko. Before the death of my father, he kept in my custody the sum of USD 30 Million ( Thirty million United States Dollars ) this money emanated from the sales of diamonds he made when he was still on the throne. My father lodged this money in a security company outside our country for security reasons and because of the political instability in my country. My Father introduced me to the security company shortly before his death. He however deposited this money without any name rather, with coded numbers which is in my possession. With my father dead, my life was at great risk, I therefore had to leave my country under cover to Spain. Now, I have decided to invest this money in a suitable and conducive environment. At this point, I now seek your assistance to transfer this money to your bank account for proper use. 20% of the total money will be yours after the transfer and 5% for any expenditure we might incur in the process while the balance will be for me. On the receipt of your positive response to assist me on this project, all information related to the project will be made available to you on request. This business is 100% risk free as long as the confidentiality the business needs is observed. For this business to take off, your bank particulars where this fund will be paid into is required. You can always reach me on my E Mail address,kokormobutu@yahoo.co.uk or telephone number-00 346 099 146 24 Warm Regards, Kokor
