RE: Query regarding GHC handling of overlapping instances.
by Simon Peyton-Jones 16 Sep '03

16 Sep '03

| If I change the definition to: | | instance Test (a -> m b) z where | test _ _ = "Third" | | it now complains about it overlapping with both of the other | definitions... Why does this overlap? Here are your instance decls instance Test (a b) (c b) where test x y = "First" instance Test (a b) (a b) where test x y = "Second" instance Test (a -> m b) z where test _ _ = "Third" Two instances *overlap* if there is a constraint (Test t1 t2) that is a) (Test t1 t2) is an instance of more than one instance decl b) None of these instance decls is more specific than all the others Under these circumstances, we can't pick one over the other. For example, Test (Int -> [Bool]) [Bool] matches the first instance decl a = (->) Int, b = Bool, c = [] and the third a = Int, m = [], b = Bool, z = [Bool] But it is not the case that the first instance decl is more specific than the third, or vice versa. (An instance decl I1 is more specific than I2 if any constraint matching I1 also matches I2). | If I add the following definition to the test code: | | instance Test (a -> m b) (m b) where | test _ _ = "Third" | | then I add the following print: | | print $ test (\_ -> [True]) [True] | | it says no instance for (t -> [Bool), but if I add a type annotation all | is Okay: | | print $ test ((\_ -> [True]) :: () -> [Bool]) [True] | | Is this expected behavior? NO: it's a bug in GHC, which I have just put into SourceForge. http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=807249&group_id =8032&atid=108032 It's rather an obscure case, but definitely wrong. Thanks for showing it up. Simon

Re: Fw: cannot find -lreadline

The HaXml package does not require or use readline. So I think this problem is a ghc-6.0.1 problem, not specific to HaXml. Regards, Malcolm

Heap profiling - breakdown by type
by Kirsten Chevalier 15 Sep '03

15 Sep '03

Currently, the -hy RTS option for heap profiling by type doesn't print a summary of the amount allocated for each type, only the amount of data that was live at a given instant. How hard would it be to change it to print out total amounts allocated over the entire run of the program for each type as well? I'd be willing to try to implement it, but any hints would be appreciated (and I wouldn't be sad if someone else went ahead and did it :-) Thanks, Kirsten -- Kirsten Chevalier * krc(a)uclink.berkeley.edu * Often in error, never in doubt

Try with a debugging RTS, and use 'stepi' rather than 'step' when in Haskell code (everything from StgRun onwards), because the debugger won't have any line number info. Cheers, Simon

DONATION FOR THE LORD.
by maggi_hatch＠eudoramail.com 15 Sep '03

15 Sep '03

FROM: Margeret hatch. I am the above named person from Kuwait. I am married to Mr. Kazeem Hatch who worked with Kuwait embassy in Ivory Coast for nine years before he died in the year2001. We were married for eleven years without a child. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days. Before his death we were both born again Christians. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of $5.6Million (Five Million six hundred thousandU.S. Dollars) with one Global Security Company in Spain. Presently, this money is still with the Security Company.Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last for the next three months due to cancer problem.Though what disturbs me most is my stroke.Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to church or better still a christian individual that will utilize this money the way am going to instruct here in. I want a church that will use this fund to fund churches, orphanages,Research centers and widows propagating the word of God and to ensure that the house of God is maintained. The Bible made us to understand that Blessed is the hand that giveth.I took this decision because I dont have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I dont want my husbands hard earned money to be misused by unbelievers. I dont want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly manner. Hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am notafraid of death hence I know where i am going. I know that I am going to be in the bossom ofthelord, Exodus 14 VS 14 says that the lord will fight my case and i shall hold my peace. I dont need any telephone communication in this regard because of the presence of my husbands relatives around me always. I dont want them to know about this development. With God all things are possible. As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the Global Security Company in Spain. I will also issue you a letter of authority that will empower you as the new beneficiary of this fund.I want you and the church to always pray for me because the lord is my shephard. My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian.Whoever that wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and truth. Please always be prayerful all through your life. Any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing for a church or christian individual for this ame purpose. Please assure me that you will act ccordingly as I stated there in. Hoping to hearing from you. Remain blessed in the name of the Lord. Yours in Christ, Mrs Margeret Hatch.
