There's at least one problem I know about: an Int will take up 8 bytes in a .hi file on a 64-bit arch. I don't think there are any endianness issues, though. Cheers, Simon

You might try using the hack I added to MBlock.h for x86_64. It's admittedly completely bogus, but it hasn't failed for me yet. On a pleasant note, the GCC folks have promised to fix the register variable problems with GCC 3.x for the 3.4 release, so we should be able to use GCC 3.4 on non-x86 platforms. Cheers, Simon

Porting GHC to powerpc-unknown-linux
by Lunar 04 Sep '03

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello, Following Donald Stewart efforts and Simon Marlow's new porting guide, I made two attempts of getting GHC working on Linux/PowerPC. I made a first attempt using cross-compiling from a Linux/i386 box. I followed every instruction on the guide, but the compiler was unusable, resulting in the following error message : hc-6.0.1: internal error: stg_ap_v_ret Please report this as a bug to glasgow-haskell-bugs(a)haskell.org, or http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/ghc/ Don got the same message for his cross-compilation tests, so I decided to stay on the same computer using the official build for Mac OS X. I had to add -Onot -fvia-C to prelude/PrimOp_HC_OPTS in ghc/compiler/Makefile to make GHC build. This failed on the RTS as said in the guide, so I decided to go on. But I was unable to build the libraries. I got a bunch of error message like : "cpp0: unkown -smart flag", and it failed later at : /compiler/ghc-inplace -H16m -O -fglasgow-exts -cpp -Iinclude -#include HsBase.h -funbox-strict-fields -package-name base -O -H32m - -keep-hc-files -c GHC/Base.lhs -o GHC/Base.o -ohi GHC/Base.hi GHC/Base.hc:1111: only 1 arg to macro 'HP_CHK_NP' (2 expected) [...] I don't know what to try next... If you use hc-build, then you don't need to copy across the .hi files: they're built later, and similarly for the package.conf file. In light of this, I might amend the instructions to recommend using hc-build even for an unregisterised bootstrap, because copying across the .hi files isn't guaranteed to work when cross-compiling (I'm not certain that the .hi format is platform-independent enough). Cheers, Simon

I think the stg_ap_v_ret panic might be due to using the wrong AutoApply.hc, or some other mixup between registerised and unregisterised code. When I went through this bootstrap process recently I cross-compiled from a 32-bit machine to a 64-bit machine - in theory this should be the most difficult kind of port, but it went through surprisingly smoothly. Ok, so it was the same OS at both ends which might have made things easier. There's a small possibility that I've missed something out from the instructions, I suppose :) > I had to add -Onot -fvia-C to prelude/PrimOp_HC_OPTS in > ghc/compiler/Makefile to make GHC build. Are you sure you're using *exactly* the same sources on both the host and the target machine? Cheers, Simon

Hi Don, > Here is a (long) summary of how I have bootstraped GHC on > various os/arch combinations using 6.0.1 .hc source, including > getting an unregisterised build, over the weekend. Thanks for all this. I recently went through the unregisterised bootstrap process myself (for amd64), and I've written some detailed instructions in the Building Guide - you might want to take a look and see if you have anything to add. For unregisterised bootstrapping, I don't recommend using hc-build. The resaon is that hc-build goes to some lengths to make a tree which is safe to 'make install' in, and this isn't necessary for bootstrapping - all you need to do is get to the "working compiler" stage, and then use this to build a completely fresh tree. I've applied your patches, with some small tweaks by myself to avoid breaking the unregisterised bootstrap, which is normally done with a compiler without interpreter support, hence the lack of the readline, haskell-src and other libraries. Cheers, Simon

Dear Sir, I am Dr. Makam Somo, a native of Cape Town in South Africa and I am an Executive Accountant with the South Africa Department of Mining & Energy Resources. First and foremost, I apologized using this medium to reach you for a transaction/business of this magnitude, but this is due to Confidentiality and prompt access reposed on this medium. Be informed that a member of the South Africa Export Promotion Council (SEPC) who was at the Government delegation to your country during a trade exhibition gave your enviable credentials/particulars to me. I have decided to seek a confidential co-operation with you in the execution of the deal described Here under for the benefit of all parties and hope you will keep it as a top secret because of the nature of this transaction Within the Department of Mining & Energy Resources where I work as an Executive Accountant and with the cooperation of four other top officials, we have in our possession as overdue payment bills totaling Fifteen Million, two Hundred Thousand U. S. Dollars ($15,200,000.) which we want to transfer abroad with the assistance and cooperation of a foreign company/individual to receive the said fund on our behalf or a reliable foreign non-company account to receive such funds. More so, we are handicapped in the circumstances, as the South Africa Civil Service Code of Conduct does not allow us to operate offshore account hence your importance in the whole transaction. This amount $15.2m represents the balance of the total contract value executed on behalf of my Department by a foreign contracting firm, which we the officials over-invoiced deliberately. Though the actual contract cost have been paid to the original contractor, leaving the balance in the tune of the said amount. we have agreed in principles and have gotten approval to remit by Telegraphic Transfer (T.T) to any foreign bank account you will provide by filing in an application through the Justice to you. I have the authority of my partners involved to propose that should you be willing to assist us in the transaction, your share of the sum will be 20% of the $15.2 million, 60% for us and 10% for taxation and miscellaneous expenses. RE: Profiling Optimised Code

Did anyone reply to this? It's an open bug http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=710864&group_id =8032&atid=108032 but we don't have a small example that demonstrates it. Can you provide one? Or can Amanda? bracket, (un)block and MonadIO
by Lunar 02 Sep '03

02 Sep '03

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello, I'm trying to make generic helper functions for database querying. I would like to be able to define functions that work for every monad that holds a database connection and is built on top of the IO monad. For this, I have defined the following type class: > class MonadIO m => ConnectedM m where > getConnection :: m Connection The 'query' function from the database library I am using returns a Statement which has to be closed under all circumstances (especially when an exception is thrown); I am using bracket to ensure this, in the following helper function: > withQuery :: ConnectedM m => (Statement -> m a) -> String -> m a > withQuery f q = > do conn <- getConnection > bracket > (liftIO $ query conn q) > (\ s -> liftIO $ closeStatement s) > f However, the definition of bracket relies on block and unblock, which have the following types: > bracket :: IO a -> (a -> IO b) -> (a -> IO c) -> IO c > block :: IO a -> IO a > unblock :: IO a -> IO a This forces f to be an IO action in the above withQuery function. If bracket, block, and unblock had these types, my helper function would be well typed: > bracket :: MonadIO m => m a -> (a -> m b) -> (a -> m c) -> m c > block :: MonadIO m => m a -> m a > unblock :: MonadIO m => m a -> m a Would anything prevent block, unblock, bracket (and other similar functions working on IO actions) from being generalized to all intances of MonadIO?
