Configure GMP and Mingw32
by Michael Adams 28 Jul '03

28 Jul '03

The following lines are in fptools/ghc/rts/Makefile. They handle configure'ing GMP, but contrary to what the comment indicates these lines *cause* problems when I'm building for mingw32 from cygwin. I have to edit the makefile so that the first branch (the one that passes 'host') is taken instead of the second branch (the one that passes 'target'). Does someone know of a specific situation in which these lines are needed? If not I think it might be best to just use the one brance and make sure to pass through *all* of build, host, and target. Michael D. Adams mdmkolbe(a)yahoo.com # ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- # Compile GMP only if we don't have it already # # We use GMP's own configuration stuff, because it's all rather hairy # and not worth re-implementing in our Makefile framework. ifneq "$(HaveLibGmp)" "YES" ifneq "$(HaveFrameworkHaskellSupport)" "YES" ifneq "$(HOSTPLATFORM)" "i386-unknown-mingw32" boot :: cd gmp && ./configure --enable-shared=no \ --host=`echo $(HOSTPLATFORM) | sed 's/i[567]86/i486/g'` else # Pass --target to configure of GMP, so that building for mingwin under # cygwin works properly (when the host is not the same as the target) boot :: cd gmp && CC=$(WhatGccIsCalled) ./configure --enable-shared=no --target=$(HOSTPLATFORM) endif __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? GHC and Mingw32 (cont.)
by Michael Adams 28 Jul '03

28 Jul '03

Ok, I got GHC compiled but running it is a tricky. It has trouble finding package.conf. I found a reference to this problem at <http://www.mail-archive.com/glasgow-haskell-bugs@haskell.org/msg05617.html>. The work-around of doing -B does work (make sure you don't but a space after the -B though), but it would be nice for a better solution. Can this be fixed? The e-mail refers to the location of package.conf changing causing the problem. Michael D. Adams mdmkolbe(a)yahoo.com The following is a demonstration of the problem and work-around. $ ghc --version D:\cygwin\usr\local\stow\ghc-6-cvs\bin\ghc.exe: Can't find package.conf as D:\cygwin\usr\local\stow\ghc-6-cvs\ghc\driver\package.conf.inplace $ find /usr/local/stow/ghc-6-cvs/ -name package\* -print /usr/local/stow/ghc-6-cvs/lib/ghc-6.1/package.conf $ ghc --version -BD:\\cygwin\\usr\\local\\stow\\ghc-6-cvs\\lib\\ghc-6.1 The Glorious Glasgow Haskell Compilation System, version 6.1 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? In Core, the list of alternatives is always exhaustive. This invariant is not documented in CoreSyn.lhs, but it should be. ghci and readline under Windows
by Antony Courtney 28 Jul '03

28 Jul '03

Hi all, On my system (WinXP Pro, Cygwin net release) using ghc 5.04.3, ghci does not seem to use readline for interactive editing from the command line prompt, while hugs does. I find interactive command line editing invaluable in an interactive interpreter, particularly during testing. Is there any way to enable readline support in ghci? I had a look through the users guide, but didn't find anything. Thanks, -antony -- Antony Courtney Grad. RE: threaded-rts
by Simon Peyton-Jones 26 Jul '03

26 Jul '03

We have a New Plan for the threaded RTS, which is stable, I think. Wolfgang Thaller is going to (a) write it up (or, rather, tidy up the existing design sketches) and (b) implement it in GHC (which is mostly done). But he's been busy recently. I'm sure that a chorus of hungry users would encourage him! The main thing the New Plan covers is the idea of a "bound thread", so that you can guarantee which OS thread will perform a foreign call; I think the lack of this guarantee is what breaks HOpenGL at the moment. The idea is that "threaded-rts" would be the default. I'm not sure it's worth making a threaded-rts variant distribution right now, given that we'd just throw it away later. But you're welcome to try. Wolfgang, do you have a timescale in mind? There are detailed instructions on building GHC for Win32 at http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/building/winbuild.html I'm not sure you are doing exactly what is specified there. The other thing to check is that you have checked out and have up to date all the directories fptools/mk fptools/ghc fptools/libraries fptools/glafp-utils Sit in the fptools/ directory and type 'make' (this will do a 'make boot' first). RE: Text.PrettyPrint.HughesPJ bug (return of the dead?)
by Simon Peyton-Jones 24 Jul '03

Thanks. I'm not sure I ever actually fixed it, because I wanted to fix the "real" bug. But I havn't gotten around to doing so, so I'm now compromising by making 'spaces' behave sensibly on a negative argument. Nevertheless, 'spaces' should never be called with a negative argument, so this "fix" is a hack. If anyone wants to find the Real Bug, I'd be happy. Meanwhile, at least it no longer loops.
