From: David Jonas Savimbi Johannesburg, South Africa Email: djsavimbi(a)phantomemail.com june 14th, 2003. Dear Sir, It is my humble pleasure to write you this letter irrespective of the fact that you do not know me. However, I got your name through your country business directory here in my search for a reliable and trustworthy person that can assist me confidently. My name is Mr.John Jonas Savimbi. I am the son of Late Dr. Jonas Savimbi from Angola. I am 29 years old and I have got two younger sisters of same blood. Our mother died almost a year ago. We are all fighting for political asylum in South Africa. We cannot find a home in Angola anymore because of the war that our late father fought with the government of Angola until he died in that war. The government of Angola is now mad at us because our late father also wanted to be president and caused the people to fight the war for him because he was the president of UNITA political movement of Angola. So now we are in South Africa and we are suffering too much because we don't have money and the government of South Africa will not give jobs to asylum seekers. I am much concerned about my younger sisters who are finding it very difficult to manage in the situation. But I know that we should not suffer this way. I know that I must not let my younger sisters get into trouble because of money. So after consideration I am hereby begging for your assistance to help me to recover the sum of USD $29 Million which is my inheritance from my late mother. My late mother had taken this money with her to Spain in a diplomatic metal box marked (Precious Stones). Subsequently she lodged the metal box (As precious Stones) with a Securities and Valuables Protection company in Spain. I am supposed to be the beneficiary in the event of her death. However, all effort I made to go Spain to claim was refused by the Spainish embassy. And this was while it was still possible for me to travel. Now I cannot travel anywhere anymore. So in the situation that we are facing now, I must find somebody who can go to the Spain on my behalf. I understand that I will have to transfer my beneficiary rights unto you. I am willing to do so in the hope that you are a God fearing person who will not abandon us after you have the money. So from the bottom of my heart I am giving you 20% of the all the money. Once we have enough to sustain us sufficiently, you may be come our fund manager and invest the rest wisely for us. If you will be kind to assist us, please inform me urgently. Kind regards to you and your family. Sincerely, David Jonas savimbi

ANNOUNCE: GHC version 6.0
by Simon Marlow 13 Jun '03

13 Jun '03

============================================================ The (Interactive) Glasgow Haskell Compiler -- version 6.0 ============================================================ We are pleased to announce a new major release of the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC), version 6.0. As with all ".0" releases, this release should be considered beta-quality; if you want real stability, then stick with 5.04.3 for the time being. Highlights of this release include: * Template Haskell, a new metaprogramming extension. * More hierarchical libraries. * Conformance with the latest FFI specification. * Sweeping internal changes to switch the evaluation model from "push/enter" to "eval/apply". See the release notes for a full list of the changes: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/users_guide/release-6-0.html How to get it ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The easy way is to go to the WWW page, which should be self-explanatory: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ We supply binary builds in the native package format for various flavours of Linux and BSD, and in Windows Installer (MSI) form for Windows folks. Binary builds for other platforms are available as a .tar.gz which can be installed wherever you want. The source distribution is also available from the same place. Packages will appear as they are built - if the package for your system isn't available yet, please try again later. Background ~~~~~~~~~~ Haskell is a standard lazy functional programming language; the current language version is Haskell 98, agreed in December 1998, and revised in December 2002. GHC is a state-of-the-art programming suite for Haskell. Included is an optimising compiler generating good code for a variety of platforms, together with an interactive system for convenient, quick development. The distribution includes space and time profiling facilities, a large collection of libraries, and support for various language extensions, including concurrency, exceptions, and foreign language interfaces (C, whatever). GHC is distributed under a BSD-style open source license. A wide variety of Haskell related resources (tutorials, libraries, specifications, documentation, compilers, interpreters, references, contact information, links to research groups) are available from the Haskell home page (see below). On-line GHC-related resources ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Relevant URLs on the World-Wide Web: GHC home page http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ Haskell home page http://www.haskell.org/ comp.lang.functional FAQ http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~gmh/faq.html System requirements ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To compile programs with GHC, you need a machine with 64+MB memory, GCC and perl. This release is known to work on the following platforms: * i386-unknown-{linux,*bsd,mingw32} * sparc-sun-solaris2 * alpha-dec-osf3 * powerpc-apple-darwin (MacOS/X) Ports to the following platforms should be relatively easy (for a wunderhacker), but haven't been tested due to lack of time/hardware: * hppa1.1-hp-hpux{9,10} * i386-unknown-solaris2 * mips-sgi-irix{5,6} * {rs6000,powerpc}-ibm-aix The builder's guide on the web site gives a complete run-down of what ports work; it can be found at http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/building/building-guide.html Mailing lists ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We run mailing lists for GHC users and bug reports; to subscribe, use the web interfaces at http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/glasgow-haskell-users http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/glasgow-haskell-bugs There are several other haskell and ghc-related mailing lists on www.haskell.org; for the full list, see http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/ Please report bugs using our SourceForge page at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ghc/ or send them to glasgow-haskell-bugs(a)haskell.org. GHC users hang out on glasgow-haskell-users(a)haskell.org. Bleeding edge CVS users party on cvs-ghc(a)haskell.org.

Is anyone else having the same problem with heap profiling? Cheers, Simon

GHC-6.0: Open with ... bug (again!)
by Calle Lejdfors 12 Jun '03

12 Jun '03

Hi. The problem with open files contained in directories whose name contain white space is still present under Windows (Win XP Pro at least). It apparently works under Linux but not under windows. Opening a file in a directory called "Test dir" via one of $ ghci Test\ dir/Test.lhs $ ghci "Test dir/Test.lhs" $ ghci Test\ dir\\Test.lhs $ ghci "Test\ dir\\Test.lhs" gives the error Test\: Can't find module `Test\' (use -v to see a list of the files searched for) The output from running ghci with the -v flag is attached to this mail. As usual ghc works perfectly. Please, please, please fix this bug (so that I can build a CVS version) as we need it in our functional programming course. Thanks, Calle

ghc-6.0 heap profiling broken.
by Keean Schupke 12 Jun '03

12 Jun '03

After compiling code with ghc-6.0 profiling support on, it appears that running the application with -prof produces an output file, but any -h? options for heap profiling causes a segmentation-fault under linux. The fault appearch to come in HeapCensus. Regards, Keean Schupke.

Dynamic Compilation
by Carsten Schultz 12 Jun '03

12 Jun '03

Hallo, Ghci and Template Haskell show that it is possible to compile and load a module into a running program. Is there a user interface to do that? Would one be possible? Would that make a Haskell analog of Yaws (yaws.hyber.org) possible? For those who don't know Yaws: It is a web server written in Erlang that can compile and load Erlang code embedded in HTML files to produce dynamic pages. I have played with it a bit, and it seems useful to me, but I would prefer Haskell over Erlang. Greetings, Carsten -- Carsten Schultz (2:40, 33:47), FB Mathematik, FU Berlin http://www.math.fu-berlin.de/~cschultz/ PGP/GPG key on the pgp.net key servers, fingerprint on my home page.

RE: type error
by Simon Peyton-Jones 12 Jun '03

You have two instance declarations: instance SubType a (Either a x) where instance (SubType a b) => SubType a (Either x b) where Which one should GHC use to resolve the constraint? (SubType x Value) It can't make an unambiguous choice, hence the error message.
