Proposal for GHC documentation
by Krasimir Angelov 29 Dec '02

29 Dec '02

Hi, GHC team The current GHC documentation is written using SGML with DocBook DTD and DSSL stylesheet. I tried to translate GHC users guide from SGML to XML and now I have XML-ised user guide with just few syntactic changes. The rewritten documentation can be translated to HTML using just a standard xsltproc tool (available for both Cygwin & Linux) and XSLT DocBook stylesheet. The main advantage of XML version is that there is already developed XSLT stylesheet which generates input for Microsoft HTML Help Compiler. The GTK development team was already developed stylesheet for DevHelp. Advantages of HTML Help browser and DevHelp are that both supports useful search engine. Haddock also has already developed HTML Help output and can be easy extended to generate .devhelp index file. I think that this will made GHC documentation much more easy for reading and browsing. --show-iface bug?
by John Meacham 29 Dec '02

29 Dec '02

some notes noticed when upgrading to 5.04.2 --show-iface seems to not be able to show .hi files created when profiling is turned on. error recieved: mismatched interface file versions: expected 5042, found 5042p also, -hb seems to segfault immediatly but other types of heap profiling seem to work. this is on redhat 7.3 and the RPMs from the ghc site. I dont seem to be getting 'heapCensus' errors anymore which is good. Hello. I was able to install rpm with --nodeps. Everything is fine. Sorry for this newbie topic. Btw, .msi installer fails under WinXP if drive C: doesn't exists. Bye. ___________________________________________________ Yahoo! Sorteos Consulta si tu número ha sido premiado en Yahoo! Sorteos http://loteria.yahoo.es

RE: Record of STRefs better than STRef to a Record?

You'll get a new record for each update. This might not be so bad though, depending on the number of fields in your record. > Right now I'm using a record of STRefs, like: > data E s = E{ > refi :: STRef s Int, > refc :: STRef s Char > } > > but it can get a little messy, since thread s propagates to > every datatype that uses the record type in it's definition. Here's another trick if you use this route: data E s = E{ refi :: !STRef s Int, refc :: !STRef s Char } and compile with -funbox-strict-fields. This will eliminate the boxing of the STRefs. RPM fails under Mandrake 9.0
by Manuel Garcia Rodriguez 26 Dec '02

26 Dec '02

Hello all. I'm trying to install rmp GHC under Mandrake 9.0, but it fails saying that it depends of libreadline.so.4, and this file exists in /lib, symlinked to libreadline.so.4.3. Sorry, but I'm too newbie, I've try to force installation but same error occurs. Thanks. ___________________________________________________ Yahoo! ext-core Questions
by Ingo Wechsung 21 Dec '02

21 Dec '02

Dear GH Users, I have been using the -fext-core option to generate *.hcr Files. I've also read the document "An External Representationfor the Core Language." There are still some things that confuse me. Firstly, it seems, that Tuples are sometimes represented for example for (a,b) as DataziTuple.Z2T (a) (b) and in other cases as GHCziPrim.Z2H (a) (b). Why is this? Secondly, in GHC produced Core programs, one sees frequently references to intermediate values from other Modules such as SystemziIO.lvl (print newline?) or GHCziNum.lvl1 (which seems to be an Integer constant) or even GHCziNum.a4 (which seems to be (>) :: Integer -> Integer -> Bool). The type of those names as well as any other names from imported Modules is not given, however. How then is it possible to type check a Core program? (For those who are interested in the background of my question: I wondered if it would be possible to translate Core to Perl. Let's say we'd translate all top level values to perl subs. Then I need to know the arity of each top level value to distinguish non-saturated function applications. For example, if we have sub M::foo($$$) { my ($a1, $a2, $a3) = @_; ... } then, if the core code is like "foo a b" the corresponding perl code could be something like sub { my $arg3 = shift; M::foo($a, $b, $arg3); } yielding a reference to an anonymous function that, when applied to another argument, calls foo. However, this can only be done, when the signature of foo is known, which is not the case if foo is imported.) Merry Chrismas Ingo

RE: Run-time options in ghc on Linux

Well, it works here... if you say "+RTS -?" does it print the help text? Could you post the exact command lines you're using to compile/link the program, and the command line used to run it? Cheers, Simon
