Run-time options in ghc on Linux
by Garner, Robin 20 Dec '02

20 Dec '02

The +RTS options don't seem to be working for me on Linux (Redhat 7.2, ghc 5.04 and 5.04.1 installed via the .rpms). One of my programs will happily consume all available memory, even though I have +RTS -M64M, and another program fails with Stack space overflow: current size 1048576 bytes. Use `+RTS -Ksize' to increase it. even though I'm using +RTS -K10M. Any suggestions ?

duplicating handles
by Hal Daume III 18 Dec '02

Question about dupTo...you can use it to, for instance, redirect stdout to a file. What if I want to have stuff that is printed to stdout to be redirect to a file *and also* printed to stdout. I fooled around with a few combinations, but nothing seems to work. Problem with building GHC (CVS version)
by Sean Seefried 18 Dec '02

18 Dec '02

I've just download the latest version of GHC from the CVS archives and I am having quite some difficulty building it on a linux machine (Debian distro) The configure script decided that my machine was a i386-unknown-linux. Here is the output where the error occurs. ....(about a page and a half of _split files) lit Text/Read/Lex_split Text/Regex_split Text/Regex/Posix_split Text/Show_split Text/Show/Functions_split -name '*.p_o') | xargs ar q libHSbase_p.a xargs: ar: terminated by signal 9 make[3]: *** [libHSbase_p.a] Error 125 make[3]: *** Deleting file `libHSbase_p.a' make[2]: *** [all] Error 1 make[1]: *** [all] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/semantix/cvsmods/fptools/libraries' make: *** [build] Error 1 I've noticed that 'ar' was consuming an enormous amount of memory (more than the paltry 128 of my machine), so my computer trashed quite a bit at this point, as it swapped to and from the swap drive. Could this error be due to running out of memory? Sean

ANNOUNCE: GHC version 5.04.2 released
by Simon Marlow 17 Dec '02

17 Dec '02

============================================================== The (Interactive) Glasgow Haskell Compiler -- version 5.04.2 ============================================================== We are pleased to announce a new patchlevel release of the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC), version 5.04.2. This is a bugfix-only release. For all the changes since 5.02.3, see the release notes: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/users_guide/release-5-04.html How to get it ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The easy way is to go to the WWW page, which should be self-explanatory: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ We supply binary builds in the native package format for various flavours of Linux and BSD, and in InstallShield form for Windows folks. Binary builds for other platforms are available as a .tar.gz which can be installed wherever you want. The source distribution is also available from the same place. Once you have the distribution, please follow the pointers in the README file to find all of the documentation about this release. Background ~~~~~~~~~~ Haskell is a standard lazy functional programming language; the current language version is Haskell 98, agreed in December 1998. GHC is a state-of-the-art programming suite for Haskell. Included is an optimising compiler generating good code for a variety of platforms, together with an interactive system for convenient, quick development. The distribution includes space and time profiling facilities, a large collection of libraries, and support for various language extensions, including concurrency, exceptions, and foreign language interfaces (C, whatever). GHC is distributed under a BSD-style open source license. A wide variety of Haskell related resources (tutorials, libraries, specifications, documentation, compilers, interpreters, references, contact information, links to research groups) are available from the Haskell home page (see below). On-line GHC-related resources ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Relevant URLs on the World-Wide Web: GHC home page http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ Haskell home page http://www.haskell.org/ comp.lang.functional FAQ http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~gmh/faq.html System requirements ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To compile programs with GHC, you need a machine with 64+MB memory, GCC and perl. This release is known to work on the following platforms: * i386-unknown-{linux,*bsd,mingw32} * sparc-sun-solaris2 * alpha-dec-osf3 * powerpc-apple-darwin (MacOS/X) Ports to the following platforms should be relatively easy (for a wunderhacker), but haven't been tested due to lack of time/hardware: * hppa1.1-hp-hpux{9,10} * i386-unknown-solaris2 * mips-sgi-irix{5,6} * {rs6000,powerpc}-ibm-aix The builder's guide on the web site gives a complete run-down of what ports work; it can be found at http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/building/building-guide.html Mailing lists ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We run mailing lists for GHC users and bug reports; to subscribe, use the web interfaces at http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/glasgow-haskell-users http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/glasgow-haskell-bugs There are several other haskell and ghc-related mailing lists on www.haskell.org; for the full list, see http://www.haskell.org/mailman/listinfo/ Please report bugs using our SourceForge page at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ghc/ or send them to glasgow-haskell-bugs(a)haskell.org. GHC users hang out on glasgow-haskell-users(a)haskell.org. Bleeding edge CVS users party on cvs-ghc(a)haskell.org.

small problem with ghc(i) on Windows
by Jerzy Karczmarczuk 16 Dec '02

I might have done something wrong, but... -- I defined infix 5 # the sharp character is accepted, the definition of the associated procedure as well, the usage a # b works. Apparently the form (#) is considered illegal. It works on my Linux. On Win2000: parse error on input ')' Have you ever seen that? Thank you. Jerzy Karczmarczuk

I don't like to blow my own trumpet (well, I do actually), but I've already implemented these in Haskell, see the paper in ICFP 2001. Of course John Reppy got there first with PML/CML. > > http://charlesstreet22.force9.co.uk/~duncan/projects/aio/AIO.hs > > My question is if there is an effecient way to block / wait on multiple > MVars. takeMVar & readMVar can wait on one MVar. The puspose is to be > able get the reults of a list of AIO operations, in the order in which > they complete. Not at the moment. Also I'm not sure such a thing could usefully be added without more or less adding events anyway. It's not enough to have takeOneMVar :: [MVar a] -> IO a which looks for the next a, because pretty soon someone is going to want you to implement data MVarActionPair a = forall b . MVarActionPair (MVar b) (b -> IO a) takeOneMVar' :: [MVarActionPair a] This I suppose could be done without too much trouble, but then you run into problems because the supplier of events has no way of knowing if these events are actually being picked up or not, something that can be very important. To solve this problem in general you need Reppy-style higher-order events. So you might as well have implemented those from the beginning anyway. Also I am very much opposed to loading extra burdens onto the implementors of MVar's unless we can be reasonably sure that MVars won't get slower as a result. MVars are an excellent low-level abstraction; it's better to build more complicated things on top of MVars as required. Good luck, George Russell

I think we should probably just have a -no-link option rather than overload the behaviour of the -no-hs-main option. Cheers, Simon

waiting on multiple MVars
by Duncan Coutts 14 Dec '02

14 Dec '02

Hi all, I've been experimenting with making an asynchronous IO library. At the moment it uses Haskell threads but the idea is that it could be transparently extended to use system AIO. http://charlesstreet22.force9.co.uk/~duncan/projects/aio/AIO.hs My question is if there is an effecient way to block / wait on multiple MVars. takeMVar & readMVar can wait on one MVar. The puspose is to be able get the reults of a list of AIO operations, in the order in which they complete. You could iterate through the list and tryTakeMVar, or spawn a thread to block on each one and then write into a central MVar or Channel. The latter is the approach that I am currently using. the reason you can't simply set them up to all write to a single MVar in the first place is that it is desirable to be able to have the same AIO operation be synchronised by multiple readers / clients. Is there a better way to do this? Or would it need a new MVar / scheduler primitive? Duncan
