RE: [Haskell] reader-like IO, parents of threads

Certainly, adding hooks to forkIO is possible. Also, providing thread local data directly is something we could do quite easily (and efficiently) in GHC. pre-built ghc 6.4.1 crashes building FPS
by Joel Reymont 19 Oct '05

Folks, I downloaded and installed the pre-built ghc 6.4.1 on Windows XP and Win2k. I tried building FastPackedStrings but ghc crashes soon after starting. Any tips? I'm gonna try with a hand-built ghc but somehow doubt it will help. Thanks, Joel -- http://wagerlabs.com/

The following code specifically tries to be as close to the original Conor McBride's code as possible. I only removed local type annotations (turn out unnecessary) and replaced `ap' with `liftM' as a matter of personal preference. > Where we came in, if you recall, was the use of a datatype to define > regular expressions. Data types are used to define regular expression: > p = (Star (Mult (Star (Check (== 'a'))) (Star (Check (== 'b'))))) > > testp = parse p "abaabaaabbbb" Moreover, *RX> :t p p :: Star (Mult (Star (Check Char)) (Star (Check Char))) the regular expression is apparent in the type of the `parser' (or its representation, to be precise). One can easily define data types Digit, Alphanumeric, WhiteSpace, etc. and so type will look more informative. Here's one step to regular types... Instead of GADT, a type class is used to associate semantic information with the data type (with labels). Typing is more explicit now. > And that's the point: not only does the GADT have all the disadvantages > of a closed datatype, it has all the advantages too! A type class can be closed too, thanks to functional dependencies. You were right: the code below is just the mechanical reshuffling of the original code, using the translation I come across a year ago. `empty' and `division' are now grouped by the parser type, which I personally like. It is hard to see any loss of expressiveness by getting rid of GADTs in this case. More explicit type is an advantage. Also an advantage is the fact that `pattern match' is guaranteed exhaustive. If I forgot to implement some particular parser, that would be a type error (rather than a pattern-match run-time error, as is the case with ADT/GADT). > Moreover, once you have to start messing about with equality > constraints, the coding to eliminate GADTs becomes a lot hairier. I > implemented it back in '95 (when all these things had different names) > and I was very glad not to have to do it by hand any more. The discovery of the presence of type equality in Haskell changes things a great deal. It would be interesting to see how your code of '95 will look now. Writing an equality and even _dis-equality_ constraint is just as simple as |TypeEq a b HTrue| or |TypeEq a b HFalse|. {-# OPTIONS -fglasgow-exts #-} module RX where import Control.Monad class RegExp r tok a | r tok -> a where empty :: r -> [tok] -> Maybe a divide :: tok -> r -> Division tok a data Zero = Zero data One = One newtype Check tok = Check (tok -> Bool) data Plus r1 r2 = Plus r1 r2 data Mult r1 r2 = Mult r1 r2 newtype Star r = Star r data Empty = Empty data Division tok x = forall r y. Parsing in Practice
by Tom Hawkins 18 Oct '05

I am writing a parser for a big, ugly, standard language and I need to decide between using either Happy or Parsec. I currently have a priliminary LALR(1) grammar, so a port to Happy would be relatively easy. But, I'm wondering if life would be easier if I chose Parsec's combinator parsing instead. It's error reporting seems to be top notch and it's "optional", "many", and "sepBy1" combinators are very elegant. However, I have a few concerns with Parsec. First is performance; what factor of slow-down should I expect? Second is bug prevention. I don't have much experience writing LL(n) grammars, so how easy is it to introduce bugs in a Parsec grammar? Even though I hate debugging LALR(1) parsing ambiguities, it prevents problems. Also, it appears the GHC developers chose Happy for Haskell. What was their rational? Thanks for your recommendations, one way or another. -Tom

Prebuilt FPS for Windows
by Joel Reymont 18 Oct '05

Folks, Since I cannot build Data.FastPackedString on Windows (ghc crashes) and it's the only library I really depend on, would someone have a pre-built version or let me know how I can build it without Cabal? On a related note, Haskell tools for Windows (happy, alex) come with extra files (templates). Where are these to be placed? Thanks, Joel -- http://wagerlabs.com/

Semantic subtyping issue: Assume we have a function f of type f :: Reg (r*) -> ... to which we pass a value x of type Reg (r,r*). We have that (r,r*) is a semantic subtype of r*, hence, the code f x is accepted in languages such as XDuce/CDuce. I'm just saying that the fact regexp can be represented via GADTs doesn't imply that we get the same expressive power of languages such as XDuce/CDuce. Parsec, state and/of my cluelessness
by Niklas 18 Oct '05

18 Oct '05

Hi everybody, for my first real 'learn some haskell'-project I decided upon a parser. The resulting application would be somewhat useful to me and armed with such a cool library as Parsec, how could I fail? I was going to be a haskell hacker in notime. Oh, the wine, the women and the fame. Didn't work out though. I'm going to parse a tree of controls. Each control can have values, (a tree of) properties and more controls as children: type Guid = String type Value = (String, String) data Property = MkProperty String (Maybe Guid) [Value] [Property] data Control = MkControl String String [Value] [Property] [Control] The top parser is along the lines of: ctrlParser :: Parser Control ctrlParser = do { reserved "Begin" ; ctrl <- identifier ; name <- identifier ; (vs, ps, cs) <- ctrlBodyParser ; reserved "End" ; return (MkControl ctrl name vs ps cs) } Now comes the tricky part for me. Since the control can have three different types of children I use a helper that parses the body of the control using other parsers, collecting their results in three lists: ctrlBodyParser :: CharParser ([Value], [Property], [Control]) ([Value], [Property], [Control]) ctrlBodyParser = do { c <- ctrlParser -- parse child control ; (vs, ps, cs) <- getState ; setState (vs, ps, (c : cs)) ; ctrlBodyParser } <|> do { p <- propParser -- parse child property ; (vs, ps, cs) <- getState ; setState (vs, (p : ps), cs) ; ctrlBodyParser } <|> do { v <- valueParser -- parse value ; (vs, ps, cs) <- getState ; setState ((v : vs), ps, cs) ; ctrlBodyParser } <|> do { getState } -- we're finished, return children GHC error: ---8<--- Couldn't match `()' against `(a, b, c)' Expected type: () Inferred type: (a, b, c) When checking the pattern: (vs, ps, cs) In a 'do' expression: (vs, ps, cs) <- getState --->8--- So, I have a problem with the state handling. Any hints? Some other questions: Do I need to supply the ctrlBodyParser with an initial state when I call it from the ctrlParser? Should I modify the last alternative in the ctrlBodyParser so that it resets the state before calling return with the collected results? Thanks, Niklas

Interactively used EDSLs
by Lauri Alanko 18 Oct '05

18 Oct '05

Hello. Are there any embedded domain specific languages that are meant to be used interactively from a Hugs or GHCi prompt without requiring the user to be acquainted with Haskell in general, only the DSL library? For instance, a Haskell shell DSL that provided combinators for creating and piping processes would fill this description, but I don't think such a thing exists. Yet I do have a vague recollection that there are some existing DSLs that can be used in such a way. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks. Lauri Alanko la(a)iki.fi
