GHC 9.10.2 is now available

The GHC developers are very pleased to announce the availability of the release candidate for GHC 9.10.2. Binary distributions, source distributions, and documentation are available at [downloads.haskell.org][] and via [GHCup](https://www.haskell.org/ghcup/). GHC 9.10.2 is a bug-fix release fixing over 50 issues of a variety of severities and scopes, including: * Significantly improved performance when dynamically loading Haskell symbols (#23415). * Fixing a bug where the simplifier sometimes destroyed join points during float out, which could impact performance (#24768). * Reduced memory fragmentation in the non-moving GC's segment allocator, improving resident set size by up to 26% for some applications (#24150). * Added new flags to control speculative evaluation (-fspec-eval and -fspec-eval-dictfun) to work around performance regressions (#25606). * Fixed several platform-specific issues, including segfaults with FFI on PowerPC (#23034) and improved code generation for AArch64 with multiway branches now using jump tables (#19912) * And many more! We aim to educate aspiring Haskell programmers beyond the basic material covered by many textbooks. The lectures will cover several more advanced topics regarding the theory and practice of Haskell programming, including topics such as: * lambda calculus; * lazy evaluation; * generalized algebraic data types; * type families and type-level programming; * concurrency and parallelism. The summer school will be held in Utrecht and consists of a mix of lectures, labs, and a busy social program. ## PREREQUISITES We expect students to have a basic familiarity with Haskell already. You should be able to write recursive functions over algebraic data types, such as lists and trees. There is a great deal of material readily available that covers this material. A set of regular papers will be conditionally accepted for publication. Authors of conditionally accepted papers will be provided with committee reviews along with a set of mandatory revisions. Regular papers not accepted for publication will be considered as draft papers, at the request of the author. Draft papers will be screened to make sure that they are within the scope of IFL, and will be accepted for presentation or rejected accordingly. Prior to the symposium: Authors of conditionally accepted papers and accepted presentations will submit a pre-proceedings version of their work that will appear in the draft proceedings distributed at the symposium. The draft proceedings does not constitute a formal publication. We require that at least one of the authors present the work at IFL 2025. After the symposium: Authors of conditionally accepted papers will submit a revised versions of their paper for the formal post-proceedings. The program committee will assess whether the mandatory revisions have been adequately addressed by the authors and thereby determines the final accept/reject status of the paper. Our interest is to ultimately accept all conditionally accepted papers. If you are an author of a conditionally accepted paper, please make sure that you address all the concerns of the reviewers. Authors of accepted presentations will be given the opportunity to incorporate the feedback from discussions at the symposium and will be invited to submit a revised full article for the formal post-proceedings. ICFP 2025 Student Research Competition Call for Submissions

ICFP 2025 invites students to participate in the Student Research Competition in order to present their research and get feedback from prominent members of the programming language research community. The SRC consists of three rounds: * Submission of an extended abstract * Poster session at ICFP 2025 * Finalists' presentations at ICFP 2025 During the first round students submit an extended abstract detailing their research to be reviewed by the program committee. Those students whose abstracts get accepted advance to the poster session round which will take place during ICFP 2025. Winners of the poster session advance to the next round, where they will give a 5-minute presentation about their work on the ICFP main stage in front of a live audience. Dear all, I have started working on this book almost 10 years ago, wrote about a third and then took a big pause until last year, when I got approached by Springer and finished the book in another 6 months, dedicating the 2nd part to Agentic AI and now it's finally out and available and I would really love to get the community's feedback :) I tried to introduce Haskell from the first mathematical principles, but very gently, so that it is accessible to a much wider audience as we all know the learning curve can be a bit steep. type-class and subclasses

I have a general question: I would like to have a type-class C in which types that are instances of C have some type parameters and then a subclass S of C where some of the type parameters of an instance of S are more constrained in some way -- perhaps by being equal and/or being instances of some other class. I have an entirely artificial example (att.) that illustrates this situation and struggled (it's a while since I wrote much Haskell) to get it past the ghc type checker until stumbling across GADTs which do seem to do the trick, so I could leave it at that but... ...I am very far from sure that this is the correct way to look at the problem and am hoping for some illumination. regards Lloyd. -- No AI was used in composing this message.
