Try System.Process.runInteractiveCommand:

import System.Process import System.IO

main = do (inH, outH, errH, _) <- runInteractiveCommand "wc -w" hPutStr inH "foo bar baz" ws <- hGetContents outH putStrLn ws

-- Prints 3
