HOpenGL and --enable-threaded-rts

In short, it doesn't work :-( . OpenGL (at least on MacOS) keeps track of the "current context" on a per-thread basis. The GLUT library sets the current context and calls back to the program. With GHC 5.03 compiled with --enable-threaded-rts, the callback gets executed in a different thread. There is no OpenGL context set up for that thread, so the first OpenGL call crashes. This might also be a problem for other state-based interfaces that use thread-local state. Has anyone already thought about how to solve this problem? I'm thinking about adding hooks to the RTS (in grabCapability, releaseCapability and scheduleThread_) which would be used for setting up the correct thread-local state whenever Haskell execution "switches" to a different OS thread. Those hook routines would have to be written in C and would be platform-specific most of the time. It's not a nice solution, but it's the only one I can think of at this time. Unless someone comes up with a better idea _quickly_, I'll try it out and then report how ugly it really is... :-) Cheers, Wolfgang

GLUT and ObjectIO

Would it be possible to use ObjectIO with GLUT in order to make my HOpenGL application to provide a larger amount of functionalities? For example, I would like my HOpenGL application to use window menus (not the pop-up menu provided by GLUT API version 3), but I had no success. (Can anyone tell also if this menu feature is provided by newer versions of GLUT, such as 4?) Thanks, -- Andre

HOpenGL1.02 on Sun's?

Is anyone using HOpenGL1.02 on Sun's? Normally, I develop on windows, but I wanted to check portability, and there seem to be some discrepancies in the main include file (GL/gl.h): .. `GL_TEXTURE_BINDING_3D' undeclared .. Under cygwin/windows and linux, this is in GL/gl.h, and according to my reading of the OpenGL spec, it seems part of the update to 1.2 (it's hidden in some table as GL_TEXTURE_BINDING_xD, where x should presumably include 3 now). We've updated our OpenGL installation to the newest available from the Sun site, but the problem persists. Strangely, I can't find any references to this problem on the web/in the newsgroups, so I assume that either noone is using this, or everyone else has a different include file. The Sun docs also don't seem to mention this as an instance of non-conformance. If you're working on Sun's, even if you haven't tried to install HOpenGL1.02 there yet, could you please check your GL/gl.h for the above constant, and let me know? (Oddly enough, GL_TEXTURE_3D *is* defined..) If that's the only glitch, I could probably try HOpenGL1.01, which is what I'm using elsewhere and which didn't use this, or remove the relevant bits from the HOpenGL1.02 distribution. But that doesn't look right, and as Sun is a member of the OpenGL ARB, I'd expect them to have a spec-conforming implementation!-) Thanks, Claus

mouseFunc vs. UserInput

With the mouseFunc callback, it is very easy to recognize if the user has clicked in a point that belongs to a square: > mouse :: MouseAction > mouse (WindowPosition x y) _ = -- check if (x,y) is inside the square I'm trying to do the same using module UserInput.hs (you can find it in the "Misc" directory), but I'm not succeeding. The problem is that, when you use UserInput, you need to bind an input event to an action, such as: > bindKey (KeyMouse LeftButton) Press (Just quitProgram) I changed the definition of the KeyMouse construct to > KeyMouse MouseButton Windowposition rather than only > KeyMouse MouseButton but this still doesn't solve my problem. Does anyone have an idea? The only think I can do by now is to bind ALL the points of the square to the desired action, but this is surely not the best solution... Thanks a lot, -- Andre

some general feedback re GHC and HOpenGL and apologies for the email i sent as ible_snover

hi andre, i just noticed you did a make distclean which of course already wipes the config.cache, so the suggestion i sent in as ible_snover was a duddo. oops. sorry i just had another idea... but doh! no, i just thought for a second that you may have needed to remove some files in your ghc directory, but no, config.status, config.log and ghc.spec in your ghc build directory are probably removed by make distclean and even if they arent, i just checked and they are certainly updated anyway when you re-run configure. So i have no idea, sorry. The problem you are having sounds really, really really weird. Good luck with the newer cygwin. So since i dont have any other suggestions re your problem ill just give you ppl some feedback on how i found the whole ghc/HOpenGl make and install process, before i forget the minor problems which i did have. 1) the ghc 5.02.3 source distribution didnt come with happy, so i went and got it via CVS, and that fixed that. 2) the HOpenGL distributed with the ghc 5.02.3 source would not compile. After compiling and installing the ghc 5.02.3 compiler (with the 4.08 compiler booted up from .hc files), i re-ran configure to use the ghc 5.02.3 compiler and also added the --enable-opengl and --with-glut-api=4 switches and tried to get HOpenGL compiled. I couldnt believe i was so close, and yet still no donut. It didnt seem to make sense that my ghc was able to find the HOpenGL package, and yet not the GLUT. I was boggling and virtually frothing at the mouth in frustration as the BezMesh.hs was first importing GL, which was apparently OK, and then importing GLUT, which was not OK. I was especially horrified by this because ghc --help gives this: ------- To compile and link a complete Haskell program, run the compiler like so: ghc-5.02.3 --make Main where the module Main is in a file named Main.hs (or Main.lhs) in the current directory. The other modules in the program will be located and compiled automatically, and the linked program will be placed in the file `a.out' (or `Main.exe' on Windows). ----------- Then I found this, in the HOpenGL dist. : --------- jss: /home/jss/stuff/src/haskell/ghc/HOpenGL-1.02 > less NEWS HOpenGL-1.02 is (again) mainly a compatibility release: * Added support for 3D textures: texImage3D, texSubImage3D, copyTexSubImage3D. * Added a "make install" target to add a HOpenGL package to GHC. This makes using HOpenGL much easier: A simple ghc -package HOpenGL --make MyCoolApp.hs is enough for most applications. ... --------- that fixed the problem, ie ghc -package HOpenGL --make BezMesh.hs succeeded. I still dont know why the -package HOpenGL is necessary, but hey, its no big deal, i will probably work that out soon enough... All in all the install on linux went relatively painlessly, considering what a huge and fearsome Beast the GHC is, and even HOpenGL aint exactly small either. kudos to all you GHC and HOpenGL development ppl. HOpenGL 1.2

Finally I got some time to install and try HOpenGL 1.02. Here is my feedback: "configure" and "make depend" were done succesfully, but during "make install", I had the following problem: mkdir: cannot make directory `/PROGS/GHC5023/BIN/ghc/imports/HOpenGL': No such f ile or directory make[1]: *** [install] Error 1 make: *** [install] Error 1 I'm using Windows98 with Cygwin, and my ghc dir is "c:\progs\ghc5023". The GHC version is 5.02.3. The HOME variable in cygwin is set to be "c:/progs/ghc5023". I copied HOpenGL to "c:/progs/ghc5023/HOpenGL" and this is where I am issuing the installation commands. I'm sending my config.log attached. Can anyone help? Thanks a lot, -- Andre

ambiguous instructions in HOpenGL install

If you do "./configure" successfully, a message appears: Configuration done successfully. Now do "make depend " and then "make" or "make install" ^^ But the INSTALL file that comes with GHC says that you must do (in order): ./configure make depend make all make install [<-- optionally] Shouldn't these two installing instructions sources be more consistent (or more clear)? Or am I too rigorous with this? -- Andre

I must have missed the problem - what actually is going wrong? GHCi looks in several places (not just LD_LIBRARY_PATH) for .so libraries. What is the -R option for? The gcc manual doesn't list it, and the ld manual says it takes a filename, not a directory. Cheers, Simon
