I suspect this is a total newbie question, so I wanted to check here before going over to the Hugs-Bugs list. I've just installed hugs_SOE-Jan2005.msi on a WinXP machine. When I enter an expression in WinHugs like following:

From what I remember, SOE WinHugs is broken (although I may be wrong). If you have to use SOE then maybe that is the only release that will work, but in general there is a new WinHugs beta release at:

http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~ndm/projects/winhugs.php

P.S. Are there any archives of the Haskell lists?
