Clarifications on building from source on Lion

I'm stuck with OS 10.7, and I'm not sure if it's possible to build ghc-iphone or not with the new llvm compilers. To clarify the build process: does the source of this project consist of the 25 patches in the snow leopard directory? Do I force all these patches to apply to GHC 6.10.4, or do I only apply the patches that are specified for this version (i.e. patch 22 is for 6.10.4, but most seem to be for 6.10.2). Supposing I get this to build, is there any hope that compiling against the new iOS 5.0 sdk (using the llvm c compilers) will work, or should I just wait for this new ghc 7 cross compiling port to be finished?

According to http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/glasgow-haskell-users/2011-December/021310… "There is now preliminary support for registerised compilation using LLVM on the ARM platform." Does that mean we can use the latest version of GHC to build iPhone ARM applications? Is this the work that was being merged to GHC head? Anbody have a recipe to build this version of GHC for iphone. Repair HaskellDraw

Hi, In a previous post I told about the more than 1800 error messages when compiling HaskelDraw and asked if someone knows how to compile it properly. Actually it is easy to do. Just remove the C-sources tag and corresponding files from the cabal file. After that it runs in the simulator. After that you have to do the `Haskell binary and library stuff' from the install description in GHC-iPhone.pdf to make it possible to build for the device. Only use $CONFIGURATION_BUILD_DIR/dist/build/HaskellDraw in stead of $BUILD_PRODUCTS_DIR/... That one didn't work for me. You can (at least I can) now build for the device. For running it you have to become an official developer (for $99) or use a jailbroken device and some adjustments to xcode. To be complete: I use xcode 3.2.5, osx 10.6.8 on an iPhone 3GS with ios 5.0.1 having a tethered jailbreak. greetings, Ton

Hi, I'm new to this. I 've snow leopard highest version with xcode 3.2.6 and so target 4.3.3. My iPhone is a (jailbroken) 5.01. I can run simple (hello world Objective C) examples on the iPhone (by `persuading' xcode to allow me :-) Compiling haskelldraw is awfull, more than 1800 errors. GetInBehind runs on the simulator but gives about 40 errors for the device, missing header files etc. Reading the maillist gives some clues about versions and adjusting things, but they are to vague for me. I also read that the stuff works on xcode 3.2.5 with ios 4.2. I downloaded this version from a torrent and I wander if it is useful to replace the current 3.2.6 with this previous version for getting the examples working. I like haskell very much and it should be fun to use it in the phone. I hope someone can give me some clues about downgrading or changing the current setup. regards, Ton

Hi, Sometimes it is the best to answer your own questions. I downgraded tot 3.2.5 and applied the changes necessary to install on jailbroken phones. HaskellDraw gives however the same problems (more than 1800 errors). I read that it is an old version that should be changed. GetInBehind compiles correctly now for a device. After removing the codesign rule form the project file, I could install it in my phone. Looking through the code shows me I have a lot to learn, but as a Haskell app can be installed now, doing this can be checked against running code. Let's see how to make Hello World in Haskell first. regards, Ton

Progress report: GHC cross compiler that installs properly

All, I did some more work and we have version 2 of the patches to make a GHC cross compiler, here - patches against GHC HEAD: http://hip-to-be-square.com/~blackh/ghc-cross/ These patches will need a lot more testing and tidying up before they're ready to push upstream. (Thanks for your email Manuel.) They also don't yet properly work with packages containing C stuff that uses configure. If you would like to give it a try, here's what you need to do: * If your cross-compile target is arm, you'll need >= llvm-3.0rc3 * Check out GHC HEAD (see GHC wiki) and apply the patches * Copy build.mk into ghc/mk/ and alien and config.sh into ghc/. Tweak to your requirements. 'alien' is a script that you must provide, to run code generated for your target platform locally. This could be by scp and ssh, or as in my case, using qemu. * ./config.sh * make and install ghc * Install a patched version of the Cabal package locally. It happens that there's a nice easy way to do that: cd ghc/libraries/Cabal/Cabal cabal install * Re-install a cabal-install to use this new Cabal. Note that the hackage version of cabal-install has an upper limit on Cabal that is too low for ghc-head's version. You can just remove this upper limit in the .cabal file. The terminal session below shows you how to use it. The CROSS_COMPILE environment variable tells Cabal what target to use. Note that it has to have a trailing -. --- iPhone: Once this is going, I'll work on getting it pushed upstream. Then I'll get onto compiling specifically for iPhone. Thanks! Now that my project (http://visi.pro ) is public and the open source code is available (http://visi.io ), it's going to a big pile of fun to integrate Visi.io into OS X, iOS and other environments with full cross-builds, etc. But that's not a topic for this list. What I would like to say is a *huge* thanks to Stephen for GHC-iPhone and for his excellent help. I'm looking forward to the 7.4.1 stuff that does full cross-compilation and I'm also looking forward to Visi.io contributing back to this community and to the greater Haskell community. Running hsc2hs

Howdy, Does hsc2hs need to be run as a separate manual phase or can it be run from the iphone-cabal thing? When I try to run it via iphone-cabal, I get link errors because the generated C program is being linked against the iphone stuff, rather than the native libraries. Any hints or pointers would be appreciated. Also, if there's any hints on running c2hs, they'd be appreciated, too, but I haven't spent a lot of time in c2hs land. Thanks, David
