When executing this program: module Main where main :: IO () main = do putStrLn aNonASCIIstring x <- getChar putStrLn anotherNonASCIIstring putChar x If the 2 strings contain only ASCII characters there is no problem, but if they contain some non-ASCII characters (I used UTF-8) they are displayed incorrectly. OTOH, If I input a non-ASCII character for x, it is displayed correctly. Also, I tried to compile it with GHC and Helium, but they produce a compile error ("lexical error in string/character literal" and "invalid character literal" resp.), under GNU/Linux and Windows. So I don't think this is a problem of my locale (UTF-8) or NHC configuration. I tried Latin-1 suplement and CJK unified ideographs, with this result. build failure

Hi there, I just tried to build nhc98-1.16, with the three patches that are available applied, on my (Gentoo) Linux-x86 machine. Problems compiling NHC98 for NetBSD/ix86

Hi, I have a problem building NHC98 (1.16 with the GCC-3.3 patch) on NetBSD. Line 294 of the Makefile reads: $(TARGDIR)/$(MACHINE)/compiler-$(CC): $(COMPILERC) Unfortunately, the $(COMPILERC) file are not generated: gmake: *** Keine Regel vorhanden, um das Target »src/compiler98/*.hc«, benötigt von »targets/ix86-NetBSD/compiler-gcc«, zu erstellen. Schluss. [No rule to create src/compiler98/*.hc.] And indeed, from line 199 on there are several rules to create hc files for nhc, hbc and ghc, but not for gcc. I tried to just go to src/compiler98 and run, analogously to the other rules, gmake HC=gcc install but this also fails: /RW/users/phlucal/i/nhc98-1.16/script/hmake: /RW/users/phlucal/i/nhc98-1.16/lib/ix86-NetBSD/MkProg: not found Stop - hmake dependency error. make fromC in this directory also fails because of the missing hc files. So, before I continue to just try things and see what happens: Has anyone succeeded in compiling nhc98 with gcc for NetBSD? What should I do? -- Philipp Lucas phlucas(a)cs.uni-sb.de

Hi, In src/prelude/System/SystemFun.hs the OS's system function is called to implement System.system. However, the various checks are not done and WEXITSTATUS is not applied as appropriate. It looks like src/runtime/Builtin/cSystem.c does the same thing. src/libraries/base/System/Cmd.hs uses systemCmd when __GLASGOW_HASKELL__ is defined, which is defined in libraries/base/cbits/system.c. This looks like it is doing the right stuff. nhc98-1.16: Segmentation fault and wrong Integer computation

Hello nhc-bugs, Using nhc98-1.16 to experiment with some number-theoretic computations (c.f. H. W. Lenstra: "Factoring integers with elliptic curves", Annals of Math., 126 (1987), 649-673), I ran into a "Segmentation fault" and also examples of inconsistent Integer computations. The result of executing the same program varies with the size of the heap (the +RTS -H<size> option). I have reduced the size of the original program and attached the resulting t5.hs. Using the also attached t5.sh, the program is compiled and executed three times with varying heap size and with three different outcomes: Segmentation fault, wrong result, OK result. The OK result is verified by also running t5.hs with hugs. The output t5.out of sh t5.sh >t5.out 2>&1 is also attached. To attempt to re-create this behaviour, place t5.hs and t5.sh in a fresh directory, adjust NHC98 and HUGS in t5.sh to point to the installed nhc98 compiler and hugs interpreter, and run sh t5.sh The t5.hs program attempts to factor the square of the Mersenne prime 2^127-1, that happens in the line putStr ( "t5: " ++ show ( ec 2 ((2^127-1)^2) 50 1 ) ++ "\n" ) of t5.hs. Not a particular useful endeavor, but it suffices to illustrate the problem. The "50" in this line limits the list of primes that are used in the elliptic curve method. It may be possible to reduce this number and get a shorter computation that illustrates similar problems. I have attempted to use (2^127-1) instead of ((2^127-1)^2), but failed to illustrate the problem. The behaviour is apparently consistent, but erratic, depending on the specified heap size. In the present case, for example, a heap size of 10000 bytes gets the segmentation fault. The ghc98 that I use is compiled (currently "make basic" only) from nhc98src-1.16.tar.gz on a Redhat 8.0 Linux. I would be most grateful to receive some advice on how to proceed in this matter. Hi, I have problems for running nhc98 with the -T option.
