I also think we want to pass the window name and class to hooks -- it's used by practically every hook, and will make user hooks simpler. I think the list approach makes writing user rules more difficult: floatMyApp w _ "MyApp" _ = return (W.float ...) floatMyApp w _ _ _ = return id -- every single hook must add this default case I've changed the summary to "Composable manageHooks interface" because that is the real issue. Maybe foldl (.) id is nicer in this case. I’m not sure if I put the ManageHook type declaration in the right spot. I did not adjust any plugins to the new interface, although the recently commited ManageDocks.hs by chance already had this interface :-) The Config.hs could probably need some example, as soon as some plugins use this interface > -- Add hooks from imported extensions, e.g. > manageHooks = [ floatGimp, manageDocksHook ] Greetings, Joachim

hi, some stuff I had floating around for a while, and a step towards the i18n support (but I'm going to send separately something more). After some experiments with readline, bash, getDirectoryContents I think that the best way to get command completion is to use getDirectoryContents over the path. This is the most efficient on my laptop, at least. Sure we also get non executable files, but that's a very small price to pay. Bash instead is used to get directory/file completions. Moreover, now we escape special characters and spaces, which should lead to a better completion handling and shell interaction. The code is a bit longer but I think it is worth. And moreover we don't need readline anymore. Finally, thanks to Eric who started the commands implementation. I added ^A and ^E. Currently, the user has to write a function of type: manageHook :: Window -- ^ the new window to manage -> String -- ^ window title -> String -- ^ window resource name -> String -- ^ window resource class -> X (WindowSet -> WindowSet) and the example suggest to use pattern guards to select more than one hook. This has disadvantages. Hooks that need IO to see if they need to be run, for example, can't be added by hooks. Also it should be possible to run more than one hook per window. I suggest that the interface for the user is with > type ManageHook = Window -> X (WindowSet -> WindowSet) as follows: > manageHook :: [ManageHook] > manageHook = [ floatGimp, anotherHook withArgument ] the code in XMonad then just runs something like > foldl (.) id $ map ($ window) Config.manageHooks to run all Hooks. Hooks that don't need to be applied just don't do anything in the X monad and return id. What do you think?
