I've started a page on advice/hints for running xmonad on OSX. There's an awful lot of macs out there now, and xmonad works well out this platform, so we should make some effort to make it easier to get into. patch: StackSet.hs edits

Hi all, I've begun going through the xmonad code carefully, in order to understand how it works, be able to contribute more, etc. Today I went through StackSet.hs. While I was going through I made a bunch of small changes (mostly documentation changes). The only code changes I made were (1) changing a gratuitous 'return' to 'Just'; (2) renaming 'findIndex' to 'findTag'. The second may be controversial; I don't know what the policy is on changing the names of functions exported by the core, but to me 'findTag' says *much* more clearly what the function does. I have also attached a patch for XMonadContrib which changes findIndex to findTag in the only contrib module which uses it, Dzen.hs. Obviously this patch should only be applied if the corresponding patch for core is made. -Brent

Add FloatLayout, a Layout Transformer adding a floating layer

Hi, this is to try out moving the floating to the level of layouts. This would make it possible to have different layout algorithms for the floating layer, including different decorations for windows there. At the moment it's possible to move windows with the mouse and keys. This will enable real binary distributions of xmonad. Additionally, it will be easier to automatically test XMonadContrib modules. Due to complications of package dependencies, we will also deprecate in-tree customization of xmonad. Instead, all user configuration will go in ~/.xmonad/Main.hs which is a client of the xmonad/XMonadContrib libraries that simply executes a defaultMain function with some options. We will also provide a wrapper script that executes "~/.xmonad/Main.hs" or launches a default xmonad session. Steps to completion: 1. Eliminate the cyclic dependencies in Config.hs. All the bindings in Config.hs should become fields in a Configuration record, which will be part of our read-only state. 2. Port contributed modules to the new Configuration system. 3. Design the new xmonad executable that either executes ~/.xmonad/Main.hs or starts an xmonad session with the default options. This wrapper must be very robust, handling issues like: * ghc missing * ~/.xmonad/Main.hs missing * Main.hs fails to compile * Missing xmonad/XMonadContrib modules due to ghc upgrade 4. When I quit either process, the process remains forever as a zombie, because xmonad never waits on children. My previous window manager (Window Maker) didn't suffer from this issue. Here's a pretty simple change that makes xmonad wait on children in its main loop. We can also change spawn to only create one process instead of two, and keep spawned processes as children.
