can one create layouts with fixed height or width for windows

New to XMonad, and loving it. Apologies if this has already come up and been answered, but I haven't been able to find anything through the usual suspects. Editing code in terminals would be the main reason I want this, but there are a couple of other apps that look better with their windows a fixed size. Is it possible, either through layouts or some other means to enforce that the maximum width a certain window can have? I don't mind if there is a little wasted space on the screen, I really don't like violating the 80th column, however. Pointers and/or suggestions would be welcome. -mdg -- Our problems are mostly behind us, now all we have to do is fight the solutions.

Hello, I just want to let you know that I submitted a bug report to xemacs about the resize problem under xmonad: http://tracker.xemacs.org/XEmacs/its/issue310 It seems like this bug is fixed in xemacs-21.5. (However 21.5 is a beta release which is not yet in Gentoo so I can't easily check if it actually works.) regards, Bas

New keybinding parser

Hi all, I've just pushed (what I hope is) an exciting patch to XMonad.Util.EZConfig. It now exports a bunch of functions for parsing keybindings, emacs-style. That's right, instead of typing ((modMask x .|. shiftMask .|. controlMask, xK_F12), action) or other such boilerplate drudgery, you can now just say ("M-S-C-<F12>", action). Submaps are also supported -- just do something like ("M-x p", action1) ("M-x q", action2) and it does the right thing. Detailed documentation is included, so look there for a more thorough explanation and examples. As always, comments, bug reports, and patches welcome. Enjoy! -Brent

Open a popup window near the rightmost border (context menu in most applications) What is the expected output? What do you see instead? I expect to get the same behaviour as when I open a popup neer the rightmost border on the left screen. On the left screen the popup is positioned in such a way that it is contained on the screen. On the right screen the popup is oblivious to the boundaries of the screen and is placed at the position of the cursor. This causes the popup to be partially invisible. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? Latest version from darcs (27 Feb 2008). Please provide any additional information below. I'm now trying with only the NoBorders module (myLayout = smartBorders $ tiled ||| Mirror tiled ||| Full). XMonad.Prompt.Shell crashes X11 to console

Hello, I updated xmonad-0.6(darcs) yesterday and since then XMonad.Pompt.Shell crashes xmonad to console. Steps to reproduce : 1) Spawn Shell prompt 2) type anything (doesnt have to be a valid command) 3) Press <CR> 4) X11 crashes to console with following message : xmonad-i386-linux: internal error: PAP object entered! (GHC version 6.8.2 for i386_unknown_linux) Please report this as a GHC bug: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/reportabug My full xmonad.hs config (http://pastebin.com/m6804d9e1) and xinitrc (http://pastebin.com/m42de0648) if needed. Don't know what other relevant info to give, so don't hesitate to ask. In the mean time, back to dmenu. Bests and long live XMonad :) Alexandre
