Issue 147 in xmonad: urxvt -e not starting correctly
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 21 Mar '08

Issue 147: urxvt -e not starting correctly http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=147 Comment #1 by SpencerJanssen: I bet you're observing a urxvt or mc race condition. Spawning another /bin/sh process delays the start of mc by a split second allowing mc to pick up the correct terminal geometry. Not an xmonad bug, I'm afraid. As a workaround, try executing 'sleep 0.5s; mc' in urxvt. slides for my upcoming xmonad talk (draft)
by Brent Yorgey 21 Mar '08

21 Mar '08

Hi all, Here's a link to a first draft of the slides for my xmonad talk this Saturday. Doubtless they are too long/short, full of typoeos, and missing vital information. But I thought you might enjoy seeing what I've got so far, and if anyone feels like looking through them I'd welcome your feedback, whether positive or critical. All I ask is that you not distribute/disseminate this link, since these will probably change before the talk based on feedback and my own editing. I'll post the final version prominently after the talk. http://wso.williams.edu/~byorgey/xmonad-FringeDC-talk-draft1.pdf<http://wso.williams.edu/%7Ebyorgey/xmonad-FringeDC-talk-draft1.pdf> enjoy! -Brent PS It looks like the talk definitely will be recorded on video (knock on wood), so of course I'll post that afterwards as well!

Ubuntu, Xmonad, and Xinerama
by Chris Sanner 20 Mar '08

20 Mar '08

So color me a newbie, to xmonad, haskell, programming, etc. I was running the unofficial xmonad package for gutsy, but upgraded to hardy heron and their included versions of xmonad and associated haskell libraries (right term?) because it appeared to be more cleanly set up to modify my xmonad install. Unfortunately, when I did this my xinerama/twinview support went away. I've now got one giant expanse of screen instead of two discrete workspaces. The digging I've done on google suggested that libghc6-x11 is built without xinerama support, but i found: /usr/lib/X11-1.4.1/ghc-6.8.2/Graphics/X11/Xinerama.hi in the package. There were a lot of scripts and commands suggested to be run, but I need a few more basic pieces to the instruction before I can run those - any help would be appreciated, and I'm willing to run (and probably install) most anything to get it right. I'd *prefer* not to step too far outside the boundaries of the debs, but would be willing to do so to submit patches/bug reports upstream. Thanks in advance. -- __________________________________________________ Christopher Sanner | mailto:hitch@propheteer.org Phone :571-277-0206 | http://propheteer.org/ The universe is like a grapefruit -- it's yellow and dimply, and some people have half of one for breakfast.

darcs patch: Add EventHook: a layout modifier to hand... (and 5 more)
by Joachim Breitner 20 Mar '08

20 Mar '08

Sun Feb 24 12:24:32 CET 2008 Andrea Rossato <andrea.rossato(a)unibz.it> * Add EventHook: a layout modifier to handle X events Sun Feb 24 14:37:06 CET 2008 Andrea Rossato <andrea.rossato(a)unibz.it> * Add Hooks.ServerMode: an event hook to execute commands sent by an external client Mon Feb 25 00:08:54 CET 2008 Andrea Rossato <andrea.rossato(a)unibz.it> * EventHook: handle events after the underlying layout and more - check the first time the Bool is True - coding and naming style Tue Feb 26 12:53:47 CET 2008 Andrea Rossato <andrea.rossato(a)unibz.it> * I now use ServerMode Wed Mar 19 20:56:03 CET 2008 Joachim Breitner <mail(a)joachim-breitner.de> * Export HandleEvent type to be able to use it in type annotations Wed Mar 19 20:57:36 CET 2008 Joachim Breitner <mail(a)joachim-breitner.de> * add ewmhDesktopsLayout for EWMH interaction This is based on Andrea’s EventHook thingy. Note that I could not merge this with some of my earlier EWHM interaction patches (darcs was failing on me), so I copied some code. Do not try to merge it with those patches either. Note that the docs are saying what should work. There are still some bugs to be resolved, but it works sometimes and should work similar to what we have.

darcs patch: make xmonad recompile if any packages are modified.
by David Roundy 20 Mar '08

20 Mar '08

WARNING: I haven't actually tested this patch. But it ought to work as advertized, and should give a good start to someone interested in making this work (right now, I don't want to wait half an hour for xmonad-contrib to recompile in order to test it). Perhaps the cabal folks could also make use of this idea (checking timestamps), so xmonad could segfault less often. Or we could jury-rig this check into Setup.lhs ourselves... Getting back my Gnome mouse pointer
by Magnus Therning 18 Mar '08

18 Mar '08

It seems that Xmonad is interferring with my Gnome mouse theme. Mostly I get the beautiful comix cursor, but in some areas (root window and certain widgets) I get a stock X left pointer. How can I make sure that I have my comix cursors everywhere? /M

resource leak?
by David Roundy 18 Mar '08

18 Mar '08

Has anyone seen signs of a resource leak in xmonad recently? I got a problem where programs were dying with a message that I forgot to record before restarting, and am wondering whether we might have recently introduced some sort of a resource leak into xmonad? Alas, I'm at a conference and won't be able to be in decent contact this week. -- David Roundy http://www.darcs.net

Issue 143 in xmonad: XEvent hook or similar needed
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 17 Mar '08

17 Mar '08

Issue 143: XEvent hook or similar needed http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=143 Comment #11 by andrea.rossato: Spencer: yes, it's a bit more complicated (not that much I believe), still it could be done NOW - my runLayout approach has been pushed (btw, you are still the project leader, are you? it would be scary if this wouldn't be the case... but maybe you just changed you mind: I'd be delighted of that...:-) Anyway, nomeata could experiment with my event hook and see what is the needed interface. After that Spencer could decide the core implementation, if needed. I remember we had, in a far past, discussed about an event hook. At the time many ratpoisen users kept asking the possibility of sending commands to the Window Manager from the command line (for scripting purposes). I remember Spencer was contrary to adding hooks - an easy solution when you run out of ideas. I took it as a sounded guideline and I tried to follow it constantly. My attempt was to increase the expressiveness of the layout class in order to allow many hooks to be implemented in the layout hook: at first I thought about the layout combinator class - at the time it seemed to me the best solution - and then I came up with the runLayout solution, which makes the combinator class useless and indeed allows and event hook to be implemented as a layout. Joachim: attached you'll find my refined event hook patch, and ServerMode, the ratpoison command line interface, as an example. You wrote that you need to intercept ClientMessage, and ServerMode does exactly that (I think byorgey could even consider them for inclusion in the contrib library now that runLayout has been adopted). If you want to try to implement your EWMH stuff with this approach you can contact me - either privately or on IRC - and I'll be delighted to give you my help. Braden: I think you do not have a clear understanding of xmonad message handling. Messages are not consumed, they are just sent. There are 2 way of sending a message: 1. with sendMessage: the current workspace is taken from the XState, its layout field is used as an argument of handelMessage and, if a new layout is returned, the screen is refreshed and the workspace, with a new layout field and with the updated stack field, is saved in the XState. 2. with broadcastMessage: in this case the layout field of every workspace is updated without refreshing the screen. At the present time broadcastMessage is badly broken (it always has been): see issue #111. When handleMessage is called, the call may change the stack of some workspace. But since broadcastMessage is run within runOnWorkspaces, the workspace layout field is updated, but the stack of the workspace is not updated. That is to say, the stack field of the workspace before running handleMessage is used to save the XState after updating the layout field (I've discussed many times this issue, but no one seems to care). Just try with ServerMode and see what happens when you send a command that changes the stack of a workspace. You'll see the effect, but the effect will not be saved. This is obviously a general problem and a really bad and longstanding bug in the xmonad core. Implementing an EventHook as the startupHook, the logHook, the manageHook and many other hooks your imagination could come up with could be a way of forgetting about issue #111. And if you do not use decorated layouts you could even come to think that issue #111 is just the fixed idea of a psychopathic wannarebe developer who has nothing better to do. But this is out of the scope of this feature request. darcs patch: Search.hs: haddock fmt (and 5 more)
by gwern0＠gmail.com 17 Mar '08

17 Mar '08

Sun Mar 16 17:39:14 EDT 2008 gwern0(a)gmail.com * Search.hs: haddock fmt This removes whitespace in source code snippets. Because Haddock renders quoted source code as monospaced unwrappable text, the excess whitespace meant you would have to scroll horizontally, unpleasantly. Sun Mar 16 17:56:42 EDT 2008 gwern0(a)gmail.com * improve the formatting for WindowGo.hs Sun Mar 16 17:57:28 EDT 2008 gwern0(a)gmail.com * Search.hs: try to add a more descriptive type Sun Mar 16 18:20:50 EDT 2008 gwern0(a)gmail.com * XSelection.hs: improved haddockf formatting, more links, & cpedit Sun Mar 16 18:32:19 EDT 2008 gwern0(a)gmail.com * Run.hs: improve haddock This module too was causing horizontal scrolling because of the shell command. I managed to discover that you only need to specify 'png:' *or* "foo.png", not both, which trimmed off enough characters. Also, I improved the docs for my functions. Sun Mar 16 18:39:46 EDT 2008 gwern0(a)gmail.com * WindowGo.hs: improve description I'm still not sure whether the description makes sense if you don't already understand the idea.

Another nice review
by Don Stewart 17 Mar '08

17 Mar '08

Will Farrington's written a nice review of xmonad too, http://dev.compiz-fusion.org/~wfarr/viewpost?id=5 "Besides the plethora of sample configuration files provided on the Xmonad wiki, the modules are perhaps the best bit of documentation I've seen in any code, ever. " Great work by the documentation team! -- Don
