Manual tiling layout
by Nathan Huesken 09 Jun '10

09 Jun '10

Hi, Is it possible to create (possible with layout modifiers that divide the current layout) a manual tiling layout similar to musca? By this I mean, that I can decide per keypress to divide the space of the current window, change its size and merge it with another window? I really like the musca tiling algorithm, but I also like xmonads many features ... Regards, Nathan

Importing Stackset qualified
by Gwern Branwen 09 Jun '10

I noticed yesterday in my config, 'import qualified XMonad.StackSet as W', and I wondered - why do we do that? Is there some rationale behind it or is it just tradition? I ask because if the former, then there are quite a few modules in XMC which don't import it as W, or as anything at all; a quick grep: Actions/DwmPromote.hs:import XMonad.StackSet Actions/OnScreen.hs:import XMonad.StackSet hiding (new) Actions/Plane.hs:import XMonad.StackSet hiding (workspaces) Actions/CycleSelectedLayouts.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Actions/UpdatePointer.hs:import XMonad.StackSet (member, peek, screenDetail, current) Actions/RotSlaves.hs:import XMonad.StackSet Actions/MessageFeedback.hs:import XMonad.StackSet ( current, workspace, layout, tag ) Actions/Commands.hs:import XMonad.StackSet hiding (workspaces) Actions/Promote.hs:import XMonad.StackSet Actions/FocusNth.hs:import XMonad.StackSet Doc/Extending.hs:Remember to import the module that defines the 'XMonad.StackSet.shift' Hooks/Place.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Hooks/DynamicLog.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Layout/Cross.hs:import XMonad.StackSet( focus, up, down ) Layout/Spiral.hs:import XMonad.StackSet ( integrate ) Layout/Grid.hs:import XMonad.StackSet Layout/Dishes.hs:import XMonad.StackSet (integrate) Layout/SimplestFloat.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Layout/Maximize.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Layout/Magnifier.hs:import XMonad.StackSet Layout/IndependentScreens.hs:import XMonad.StackSet hiding (filter, workspaces) Layout/Simplest.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Layout/Circle.hs:import XMonad.StackSet (integrate, peek) Layout/PositionStoreFloat.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Layout/HintedGrid.hs:import XMonad.StackSet Layout/Master.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Layout/TwoPane.hs:import XMonad.StackSet ( focus, up, down) Layout/Square.hs:import XMonad.StackSet ( integrate ) Layout/TabBarDecoration.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Layout/IM.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Layout/SimpleFloat.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Layout/DwmStyle.hs:import XMonad.StackSet ( Stack (..) ) Layout/Tabbed.hs:import qualified XMonad.StackSet as S Layout/Drawer.hs:import XMonad.StackSet as S Prompt/Layout.hs:import XMonad.StackSet ( workspaces, layout ) Util/Dzen.hs:import XMonad.StackSet If the former, then several of these need to be fixed or changed, I think. -- gwern

Comment #2 on issue 22 by twentyafterfour: Mod-h / mod-l shouldn't move the dividing line past the edge of the screen http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=22 this bug still seems to exist in OneBig layout. not sure if it does with others

XMonad in linuxmint 64bits
by luixsansan＠hotmail.com 07 Jun '10

07 Jun '10

Hello, I have installed XMonad in my computer with LinuxMint version 9, 64 bits, Linux Kernel 2.6.32-21-generic, GNOME: 2.30.0 I had no problems with the installation but when I try to run xmonad from a terminal I got the following message: /home/luis/.xmonad/xmonad-x86_64-linux: executeFile: does not exist (No such file or directory) xmonad executable is in /usr/bin and there is not .xmonad directory in my home directory, neither an executable xmonad-x86_64-linux in any directory. I created a directory .xmonad and a symbolic link xmonad-x86_64-linux but nothing happenned. I downloaded all the software with the software manager utility. Does anyone know why is LinuxMint asking for executable xmonad-x86_64-linux?, do I have to create this?, if yes, how?. In the documents there is not reference to a directory .xmonad, the reference is to .xsessions, is this a change that has not been documented yet?. Thank you very much for your kind answer. Luis.

The IM layout and skype
by Nathan Huesken 05 Jun '10

05 Jun '10

Hi, I am using the IM layout for skype. The problem is, that the chat windows tend to get into the area for the contacts window. I use the layout like this: withIM (1%7) (ClassName "Skype") (LG.Grid False) But both the contacts window, as well as the chat windows have the same class name: WM_CLASS(STRING) = "skype", "Skype" What can I do? Thanks! Nathn

Urgent border color
by Sergey Alirzaev 03 Jun '10

03 Jun '10

Is there a way to set the border color for windows with urgent flag set? Looks like there's no way to set it using XConfig or UrgencyHook. I saw something on topic inside Theme, but it should be working only for decorations.

So, let me get this straight: your problem is that if smartBorders is applied to the entire combined Layout (tiled ||| Full), then it redraws worse than explicitly applying smartBorders to each sub-layout? -- Ivan Lazar Miljenovic Ivan.Miljenovic(a)gmail.com IvanMiljenovic.wordpress.com

bug using NoBorders and HintedTile
by TeXitoi 02 Jun '10

Because having a google account is against my religion, I post here a bug report. Sumbit it to the bug tracker if you want. The xmonad.hs showing the bug with comments: ######## import XMonad hiding (Tall) import XMonad.Layout.NoBorders import XMonad.Layout.HintedTile import XMonad.Hooks.ManageDocks -- open 2 terminals. focus on one. launch top inside. change layout twice -- focused window do not follow hints buggy = defaultConfig { manageHook = manageHook defaultConfig <+> manageDocks, layoutHook = avoidStruts . smartBorders $ tiled ||| Full } -- focused window will first not follow hints, and then follow. flashing = defaultConfig { layoutHook = smartBorders $ tiled ||| Full } -- normal behavior, distributing smartBorders workarround = defaultConfig { manageHook = manageHook defaultConfig <+> manageDocks, layoutHook = avoidStruts $ smartBorders tiled ||| smartBorders Full } main = xmonad buggy tiled = HintedTile 1 0.03 0.5 TopLeft Tall ######## I didn't find the explaination, but I suspect smartBorder saying to the layout that the focused window do not have border (because of the previous layout without border) and that HintedTile compute the size of the window as there is no border, and then smartBorders add the borders (resulting of a smaller window that do not follows hints). -- Guillaume Pinot http://www.irccyn.ec-nantes.fr/~pinot/ « Les grandes personnes ne comprennent jamais rien toutes seules, et c'est fatigant, pour les enfants, de toujours leur donner des explications... » -- Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Le Petit Prince () ASCII ribbon campaign -- Against HTML e-mail /\ http://www.asciiribbon.org -- Against proprietary attachments
