is it possible to display workspace number on the corresponding screen?

Hi everyone, I just moved to a three-screen setup at work and am suffering from a curious problem: I cannot remember which workspace is being displayed on each of the screens! That makes it pretty time-consuming to switch one screen from its current workspace to a different one. With the earlier help of list members, I am using showWMName: import XMonad.Layout.ShowWName myLayout = layoutHook gnomeConfig -- part of displaying current workspace name using Xmonad.Layout.ShowWName main = xmonad $ ewmh gnomeConfig { manageHook = manageHook gnomeConfig <+> composeAll myManageHook, workspaces = myWorkspaces, modMask = mod4Mask, -- makes all xmonad shortcuts be "Windows key + X" (thus not interfering with any app's) borderWidth = 3, normalBorderColor = "#cccccc", focusedBorderColor = "#cd8b00", layoutHook = showWName myLayout } `additionalKeysP` myKeys This gets me a small useful indication of which workspace I am moving to *when I switch from one to the other*. Similarly, is it possible to permanently display in a corner (e.g., in the bottom-left corner) of each screen the number of the workspace that is being displayed on that screen? Or perhaps have the option of showing this same information in the center of each screen by pressing a hot key? With multihead setups (where I think xmonad really shines), it is quite confusing not know which workspace you are looking at on each screen... I only wish I understood Haskell so that I could implement something like this. If this is a small hack that can be accomplished with three lines of code, please tell me how to do it! :) all the best and my thanks for any help ~lara

What is the expected output? What do you see instead? The expected output should be that: Man can choose (or focus on) the "edit text" component and change the content. However the output I got was that: The "edit text" component can not be focused at all, the focus is only on the tui window, so I can not change the content inside the "edit text" component. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? The related version of the products are: CPU : amd64 System : Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Xmonad : 0.9.1 Matlab : R2010a Java : jre1.6.0_23 Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". I have two monitors, and I use the "gnomeConfig" instead of "defaultConfig", also the "wmname" has been set to "LG3D". My "xmonad.hs" file can be found in the attachment. By the way, it can compile and work fine, I just have this WM_TAKE_FOCUS problem. Please provide any additional information below. 1. I'm aware that there was an issue 177 befoe, which can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=177 And it seems the "comment 33" has already resolved this problem. However I'm pretty new for using Xmonad. The words there are totally unreadble for me. Also I install Xmonad with "sudo aptitude install xmonad", and I cannot find the "Core.hs" mentioned in issue 177. In addition, issue 177 was published in 2009, I don't konw whether it still work with Ubuntu 10.04 built-in xmonad or not. Can anyone give me a step by step instruction please? For example, go to which file and paste or change which part or which line. Can I only change the "xmonad.hs" file to sovle this problem? 2. I don't have any java "gray box" problem, just the gui subcomponent can not be focused on. 3. I'm looking for the solution for a long time. There is a solution to change jre "motif21" into "motif12" and then set the enviorment variable "AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit". I have tested it, this solution only works for not amd64 pcs. For amd64 pc, it does NOT work at all. 4. This is the most suprising part. When starting the matlab with desktop, man can choose which jre they want to use. For me I choose "jre1.6.0_23", which means I start matlab in bash with command "export MATLAB_JAVA=~/jre1.6.0_23 && matlab". I use jre1.6.0_23 because matlab built-in java will give a grey box under Xmonad. With "jre1.6.0_23" the gui shows up, the gui "button" also works fine, only the "edit text" componet can no be focused. And here comes the most suprising part : If I use command "export MATLAB_JAVA=~/aaaaaaaaaa && matlab" to start matlab, where "~/aaaaaaaaaa" is a nonexisting directory, of course I cannot get a desktop because it cannot find any java. But the gui now works perfectly. It means although matlab lab hasn't been given any particular java path, it can still open gui and this time, the "edit text" component can be focused on and so changing the text inside is possible. I don't understand why, but it happens. Could anyone tell me why? 4. I also tried new "jdk 7", it cannot solve the problem. Under "jdk 7", the gui is a "grey box", cannot show any components, also it makes matlab very very slow. 5. In addition, I tried "openjdk-6" instead of "jdk-6", again it doesn't work. 6. gnome-terminal Border Color

Hi, I seem to be getting a weird effect on gnome-terminal's border color. In all other windows, my border shows as a solid color (red or grey in my case). However, gnome-terminal's border colors seems to be half transparent and my desktop wallpaper is showing through. This makes it really difficult to figure out which window is currently active. Thank you for your help -- There are 10 types of people, those who know binary and those who don't.

This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 2697 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) I don't have the problem in other workspaces. What steps will reproduce the problem? Sadly this error occurs randomly. Here are the steps that caused the last error. 1. Open evince document viewer in workspace 2. 2. Open a new evince window (using Ctrl+n) 3. Try to resize the masterpane. Evince will crash, and from this point onwards it is not possible to have two windows at the same time in workspace 2. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? I didn’t know where else to put it. The site (e.g. http://xmonad.org/about.html ) states, that the code base is only ~1000 lines of code. While when I click on the link named “policies” on that very page (leading to http://code.haskell.org/xmonad/tests/Properties.hs ), I get a single file that already has 1191 lines. Some of them are empty, yes, and “lines” is not a very good indicator for complexity, also yes, but I think someone has to update those ~1000 line statements. ^^ Anyway, I’m thinking about contributing some pretty extensions, so I was disappointed, as I hoped to be able to read all its code in one evening…

Tiling messed up while external monitor is connected

Hello, I'm trying to use an external monitor with my Arch Linux x64/Xmonad setup (Intel integrated graphics), and I'm having some tiling issues when using the default tiling algorithm. My laptop has a 1440x900 monitor, to which I've connected a 1280x1024 external monitor in the past without any problems. There are also no problems when no external monitors are connected. But when a 1600x1200 external monitor is connected, the tiling on the _laptop monitor_ is messed up (go to http://ompldr.org/vOHQ3Mw for a screenshot). It may be a little difficult to observe - the window heights are reduced to ~10 pixels each and placed at the top of the screen. If I open a second window, each one takes up half of the monitor width, as usual (the window heights remain at ~10 pixels each). I have dzen2 bars at the top and bottom of the laptop monitor and have avoidStruts enabled, so the windows shouldn't even be in that particular part of the screen. Any ideas? Thanks, Samir Unni

Not reproducible, but it *always* happen after a long running (10h+) Emacs session. It happen when switching between windows in fullscreen mode or when resizing a window. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? I should be able to switch between windows or resize them, but Emacs is stuck in the position and size it had when the bug happen. The other windows behave normaly but are masked by the stuck Emacs window. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? 0.9.2-1.2/Arch It also happened to me often using older version of XMonad under Debian. Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". This command doesn't produce any output, but that bug happen even without any customization. Please provide any additional information below. Never saw that bug happen with anything other than Emacs. This issue is probably related to: http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=413 I'm running inside a VirtualBox vitual machine, I've never saw this bug with a physical one, but I never ran long enough sessions on them either.
