Emacs frame with STRUT+DOCK doesn't get keyboard focus
by Ted Zlatanov 09 Jun '11

09 Jun '11

I'm not submitting this as a bug yet because I'm not sure if it's a XMonad or an Emacs problem. Here's the code, to be run on a checkout from the Emacs trunk: #+begin_src: emacs-lisp (defun make-special-frame () (let* ((width 200) (height 500) (ff (make-frame `((visibility . nil) (width . 20))))) (x-change-window-property "_NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL" `(,width 0 0 0 0 ,height 0 0 0 0 0 0) ff "CARDINAL" 32 t) (x-change-window-property "_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE" '("_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DOCK") ff "ATOM" 32 t) (make-frame-visible ff))) (make-special-frame) #+end_src The above creates, for me, a new Emacs frame that behaves like a strut (panel, dock, I'm not sure of the exact terminology). It's unmoveable and pinned to a window edge. So far so good. But XMonad doesn't give it the keyboard focus; I can only use the mouse in that frame. That's a problem since Emacs is mostly keyboard-driven, so it's hard to do much in that frame. The above works in Metacity and awesome. Is it a XMonad bug? Thanks Ted

Gnome3 and xmonad
by Magnus Therning 08 Jun '11

08 Jun '11

Gnome3 just hit my distribution and after the upgrade from Gnome2 I no longer get xmonad on login :( There are many things I like about Gnome3 and the shell, but I've gotten really used to xmonad, manipulating windows via the keyboard, and most importantly I love the tiling window placement. I can't seem to find any description of using xmonad with Gnome3, is there any? /M -- Magnus Therning OpenPGP: 0xAB4DFBA4 email: magnus(a)therning.org jabber: magnus(a)therning.org twitter: magthe http://therning.org/magnus Most software today is very much like an Egyptian pyramid with millions of bricks piled on top of each other, with no structural integrity, but just done by brute force and thousands of slaves. -- Alan Kay

Issue 439 in xmonad: suggestion: CycleWS should export the screenBy function
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 08 Jun '11

08 Jun '11

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 439 by linusar...@gmail.com: suggestion: CycleWS should export the screenBy function http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=439 Reference: http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/xmonad/2011-January/011029.html From a Haskell perspective, if CycleWS exports the screenBy function, then a user can go from (the default): -- mod-{w,e,r}, Switch to physical/Xinerama screens 1, 2, or 3 -- mod-shift-{w,e,r}, Move client to screen 1, 2, or 3 -- [((m .|. modm, key), screenWorkspace sc >>= flip whenJust (windows . f)) | (key, sc) <- zip [xK_w, xK_e, xK_r] [0..] , (f, m) <- [(W.view, 0), (W.shift, shiftMask)]] to the more flexible -- mod-{w,e}, Switch to previous/next Xinerama screen -- mod-shift-{w,e}, Move client to previous/next Xinerama screen -- [((m .|. modm, key), (screenWorkspace =<< sc) >>= flip whenJust (windows . f)) | (key, sc) <- zip [xK_w, xK_e] [(screenBy (-1)),(screenBy 1)] , (f, m) <- [(W.view, 0), (W.shift, shiftMask)]] It surprises me that such a useful little function is not exported already. So, the patch is a one-liner change: --- CycleWS.hs 2011-02-21 20:48:25.000000000 -0800 +++ CycleWS-new.hs 2011-03-06 13:53:10.000000000 -0800 @@ -56,6 +56,7 @@ , shiftPrevScreen , swapNextScreen , swapPrevScreen + , screenBy -- * Moving between workspaces, take two! -- $taketwo

is it possible to display workspace number on the corresponding screen?
by Lara Michaels 05 Jun '11

05 Jun '11

Hi everyone, I just moved to a three-screen setup at work and am suffering from a curious problem: I cannot remember which workspace is being displayed on each of the screens! That makes it pretty time-consuming to switch one screen from its current workspace to a different one. With the earlier help of list members, I am using showWMName: import XMonad.Layout.ShowWName myLayout = layoutHook gnomeConfig -- part of displaying current workspace name using Xmonad.Layout.ShowWName main = xmonad $ ewmh gnomeConfig { manageHook = manageHook gnomeConfig <+> composeAll myManageHook, workspaces = myWorkspaces, modMask = mod4Mask, -- makes all xmonad shortcuts be "Windows key + X" (thus not interfering with any app's) borderWidth = 3, normalBorderColor = "#cccccc", focusedBorderColor = "#cd8b00", layoutHook = showWName myLayout } `additionalKeysP` myKeys This gets me a small useful indication of which workspace I am moving to *when I switch from one to the other*. Similarly, is it possible to permanently display in a corner (e.g., in the bottom-left corner) of each screen the number of the workspace that is being displayed on that screen? Or perhaps have the option of showing this same information in the center of each screen by pressing a hot key? With multihead setups (where I think xmonad really shines), it is quite confusing not know which workspace you are looking at on each screen... I only wish I understood Haskell so that I could implement something like this. If this is a small hack that can be accomplished with three lines of code, please tell me how to do it! :) all the best and my thanks for any help ~lara

XMonad-like environment on Windows?
by Don Stewart 04 Jun '11

04 Jun '11

Hey all, For work purposes it looks like I'll be doing a lot of FP hacking on Windows. Does anyone have advice on the best way to make Windows as close to XMonad as possible? I don't want to lose my productivity edge ... ;) -- Don

Issue 408 in xmonad: WM_TAKE_FOCUS problem when using matlab gui for Xmonad 0.9.1, cpu amd64, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS system
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 04 Jun '11

04 Jun '11

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 408 by lingyu.ma.fu: WM_TAKE_FOCUS problem when using matlab gui for Xmonad 0.9.1, cpu amd64, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS system http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=408 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1.Use "guide" command in matlab to generate a new gui. 2.Put a "edit text" component into the field. 3.Run the gui. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? The expected output should be that: Man can choose (or focus on) the "edit text" component and change the content. However the output I got was that: The "edit text" component can not be focused at all, the focus is only on the tui window, so I can not change the content inside the "edit text" component. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? The related version of the products are: CPU : amd64 System : Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Xmonad : 0.9.1 Matlab : R2010a Java : jre1.6.0_23 Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". I have two monitors, and I use the "gnomeConfig" instead of "defaultConfig", also the "wmname" has been set to "LG3D". My "xmonad.hs" file can be found in the attachment. By the way, it can compile and work fine, I just have this WM_TAKE_FOCUS problem. Please provide any additional information below. 1. I'm aware that there was an issue 177 befoe, which can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=177 And it seems the "comment 33" has already resolved this problem. However I'm pretty new for using Xmonad. The words there are totally unreadble for me. Also I install Xmonad with "sudo aptitude install xmonad", and I cannot find the "Core.hs" mentioned in issue 177. In addition, issue 177 was published in 2009, I don't konw whether it still work with Ubuntu 10.04 built-in xmonad or not. Can anyone give me a step by step instruction please? For example, go to which file and paste or change which part or which line. Can I only change the "xmonad.hs" file to sovle this problem? 2. I don't have any java "gray box" problem, just the gui subcomponent can not be focused on. 3. I'm looking for the solution for a long time. There is a solution to change jre "motif21" into "motif12" and then set the enviorment variable "AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit". I have tested it, this solution only works for not amd64 pcs. For amd64 pc, it does NOT work at all. 4. This is the most suprising part. When starting the matlab with desktop, man can choose which jre they want to use. For me I choose "jre1.6.0_23", which means I start matlab in bash with command "export MATLAB_JAVA=~/jre1.6.0_23 && matlab". I use jre1.6.0_23 because matlab built-in java will give a grey box under Xmonad. With "jre1.6.0_23" the gui shows up, the gui "button" also works fine, only the "edit text" componet can no be focused. And here comes the most suprising part : If I use command "export MATLAB_JAVA=~/aaaaaaaaaa && matlab" to start matlab, where "~/aaaaaaaaaa" is a nonexisting directory, of course I cannot get a desktop because it cannot find any java. But the gui now works perfectly. It means although matlab lab hasn't been given any particular java path, it can still open gui and this time, the "edit text" component can be focused on and so changing the text inside is possible. I don't understand why, but it happens. Could anyone tell me why? 4. I also tried new "jdk 7", it cannot solve the problem. Under "jdk 7", the gui is a "grey box", cannot show any components, also it makes matlab very very slow. 5. In addition, I tried "openjdk-6" instead of "jdk-6", again it doesn't work. 6. Of course, the "wmname" has already been set to "LG3D" in the "xmonad.hs" file. Hope to get replys soon. Thanks in advance!! Attachments: xmonad.hs 1.5 KB
