Issue 359 in xmonad: shellPromptHere from XMonad.Actions.SpawnOn doesn't work as claimed
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 06 Aug '11

06 Aug '11

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 359 by wei.hoo: shellPromptHere from XMonad.Actions.SpawnOn doesn't work as claimed http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=359 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Bind a key combination to shellPromptHere 2. On workspace 1, spawn a slow-starting program, say opera, using shellPromptHere 3. Switch to workspace 2 What is the expected output? The program is placed on workspace 1 where I started the program. What do you see instead? The program shows up on the current workspace, #2. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? xmonad-darcs and xmonad-contrib-darcs on Arch Linux. Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". Please provide any additional information below. As a general question, how do I go about debugging issues like this? In particular, how do I write out debugging information to files/console/screen? A few issues with xmonad I'd like to fix
by Laurent Humblet 25 Jul '11

25 Jul '11

Hi, I'm now using xmonad for two months and I really like it. I have a few questions about some issues I'd like to fix so here there are: 1) I would like to use my keypad to switch to a given layout but I don't know how to do it. For instance: MOD + SHIFT + Keypad 1 => switch to 'tiled' MOD + SHIFT + Keypad 2 => switch to 'Full' etc ... 2) When I ALT-TAB once and release ALT and TAB, I like to go back to the previous window in the stack instead of going forward again, is this possible ? 3) Is there any bypass or automatic script that could do the "# cat /proc/####/fd/4" thing automatically when xmonad freezes? 4) Is there some kind of online config generator ? Some kind of html/javascript page that would generate an xmonad.hs file automatically from a set of checkboxes (azerty keyboard, add new layouts, etc). The idea here is to ease the quick config setup for a non developer or for someone less willing to learn and hack in Haskell for instance. 5) My desktops/workspaces 6 and 8 do not work. When I MOD + 6 or MOD + 8, it doesn't switch to it at all and MOD + SHIFT + 6 or 8 doesn't move the window to that workspace. Maybe this is tied to the fact that I have an belgian azerty keyboard but I do use the azerty config. Here is my xmonad.hs config: http://pastebin.com/gd9LLn6U The config still has some commented parts in it but it's fairly clean. Thank you for your help. Best regards, Laurent

Xmonad shortcuts just stopped working
by Joseph Garvin 22 Jul '11

22 Jul '11

I turned on my machine today and Xmonad's keyboard shortcuts no longer work. I haven't changed my config file in a long time, so I don't think that's it. I can tell that the window manager is responding because focus still follows my mouse fine. *I didn't turn on numslock or scroll lock. *I tried setting numlockMask to 0, didn't help. *I have modMask set to mod4Mask, and if I run xev and press the Windows key it says I'm pressing Super_L (which I believe is mod4). *Adding shift, control, or alt when pressing the Windows key doesn't make any of the shortcuts work either. *I rebooted into Windows, and the Windows key works fine there so I know the key isn't broken. *If I run metacity instead of xmonad I can Alt+Tab and Press Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right to switch desktops without a problem. I'm at a loss for what to try next. Ideas? My full config file is here: https://github.com/jgarvin/joe-etc/blob/master/xmonad/xmonad.hs -Joe G.

Issue 462 in xmonad: Ewmh desktop handle event doesn't correctly handle _NET_WM_DESKTOP message type
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 18 Jul '11

18 Jul '11

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 462 by punitagr...@gmail.com: Ewmh desktop handle event doesn't correctly handle _NET_WM_DESKTOP message type http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=462 In xmonad-contrib source package, in the folder XMonad/Hooks/EwmhDesktops.hs in the "handle" function when processing "_NET_WM_DESKTOP" message type the argument n is checked for 0 <= n <= length ws. The specification at http://standards.freedesktop.org/wm-spec/wm-spec-1.3.html#id2507080 states that when n is 0xffffffff the window is requesting to be placed on all desktops. Instead xmonad logs an error to .xsession-errors file. This bug triggered for me when trying to use xmonad as the window manager within kde. On launching krunner using "Windows-P" combination from kde4Config krunner doesn't appear. I am using ver 0.9.1 of xmonad on Kde 4.5.5 in Ubuntu 10.10. I had a quick look at the code to see if there was an easy fix but my Haskell is quite poor to attempt any changes. I'll be glad to test a fix though. Thanks, Punit Attachments: xmonad.hs.bak 2.2 KB

All windows in row?
by Davi Pires 16 Jul '11

16 Jul '11

(Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I have already tried google and found nothing useful.) What is the best and simplest layout manager that will allow me to put all windows in a single row, and possibly resize each of them? Sometimes I'd like to have three windows tiled horizontally, and I guess xmonad is perfect for that. I found ZoomRow, and it looks exactly like what I need, but when I add it to xmonad.hs, I get an error message: "Could not find module `XMonad.Layout.ZoomRow'". And then, how can I install it? Thanks for the help. -- davi pires

Issue 466 in xmonad: Documentation update for dynamicLogXinerama
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 15 Jul '11

15 Jul '11

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 466 by wuz...@gmail.com: Documentation update for dynamicLogXinerama http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=466 The documentation for dynamicLogXinerama is incorrect. It states that at the current time the format can't be replicated with defaultLogWithPP, but now there is the ppSort which can be used. I made a patch against the latest darcs which updates the docs. Make floating windows respect docks
by Philipp Haselwarter 15 Jul '11

Hi, Is it possible to have new floating windows placed in a way that does not cover docks (avoidStruts ?)? Maybe even neither a dock nor another floating window? best, -- Philipp Haselwarter

Issue 465 in xmonad: Mousing over a floating window changes which underlying Full layout window is visible
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 08 Jul '11

08 Jul '11

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 465 by c...@google.com: Mousing over a floating window changes which underlying Full layout window is visible http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=465 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Open three windows 2. Make one window floating, resize it into something manageable down in a corner 3. Switch layout to Full 4. Mouse over the floating window -- the underlying visible Full window will switch to the other one 5. If this does not occur, switch which underlying window is visible (e.g. ModMask+Tab), try again -- it should now occur. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Giving focus to a floating window should not change which Full window is visible underneath. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? xmonad and xmonad-contrib 0.9.2, cabal install, on Ubuntu Linux 10.04. Also observed on Ubuntu Linux 11.04, unknown xmonad version (latest cabal install, most likely). Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". No output from "--recompile". xmonad.hs attached. Attachments: xmonad.hs 4.3 KB

darcs patch: ungrab-keyboard-before-action
by Ben Boeckel 06 Jul '11

06 Jul '11

In X.A.Submap, the keyboard is grabbed to handle the submapping. However, the keyboard is not released until *after* the action is executed. This creates the situation where any action which requires a keyboard grab (such as submap itself), cannot be submapped. I encountered this issue with WindowBringer where dmenu would fail to appear since it failed to grab the keyboard. A delay could be used, but this is just a race. Testing is probably needed; I've seen no issues so far and I'm a heavy user of submap (my modMask is essentially <Ctrl-i>). --Ben [1]http://git.benboeckel.net/?p=dotfiles.git;a=blob;f=dotfiles/base/X11/xmon… 1 patch for repository http://code.haskell.org/XMonadContrib: Sun May 15 17:03:12 EDT 2011 Ben Boeckel <mathstuf(a)gmail.com> * ungrab-keyboard-before-action If an action that requires the keyboard to be grabbed (e.g., launching dmenu), it is a race when submapping the action as to whether the action will have access to the keyboard or not. To fix this, the keyboard should be ungrabbed before executing the action.
