Gnome Workspace switcher will attempt to show icons in the boxes that represent windows when the box is big enough. You can try to get more icons by increasing the size that the Workspace Switcher has available to work with (ie, by increasing the size of your bar/panel). It's possible that you can find a compositing window manager plugin that will show window previews on hover of the Workspace Switcher. (I had such a thing working in either Beryl or Compiz at one point.) What I've been using when I need to remember where I left a specific app (or want a quick review of all of the applications I am running) is Gnome's Application/Task switcher menu (not the bar, but the menu). You can set the menu to list all of your workspaces, rather than just the current one. The menu shows, grouped under each workspace name, an icon and title for every application. With the Gnome manageHook properly configured in your xmonad.hs you can click on an application on the menu and jump to the appropriate workspace. Finally, it also helps to have strong keyboard bindings for workspace switching. If you don't have them already, you probably want good "next workspace" and "previous workspace" key bindings (in the "cycle workspace" module). Dear all, Thank you for your amazing replies. Until now I have managed to get XMonad.Layout.ShowWName running and it is already great help. What I would like, though, would be to make that small indication of what the current workspace is called *permanent* -- by having it sit, eg, in a corner of each of my screens. Looking at the source [http://xmonad.org/xmonad-docs/xmonad-contrib/src/XMonad-Layout-ShowWName.ht…] I understand that I can change the x and y arithmetic to position the small window displaying the workspace name in a corner of my screen. What I don't know how to do is: - to disable the "timer", so that it doesn't fade out; I guess it has to be done in the last two statements of that function? - how to recompile XMonad.Layout.ShowWName so that this "custom" version runs rather than the one included in xmonad-contrib on my ubuntu system. Any guidance on how to pull this off would be amazing. : ) Many thanks, best, ~lara

modal window gets placed on unplugged monitor, makes system unusable

Hello, I can always reproduce this behavior. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and was going to post this as a bug report on gnome-keyring, but now suspect I can probably work around this within xmonad. In short: when using a laptop that will only at times be connected to an external monitor but also used "by itself", is there a way to make sure that a modal window will always get placed in a currently visible part of my desktop area? My problem is that when I boot my laptop by itself, a modal window that grabs all input focus (gnome-keyring's "please insert passphrase", which often pops up on Ubuntu systems if there is a known, encrypted wifi network within range) is getting placed in my external monitor which... is not plugged to the computer at all. The result is that no elements of the Gnome UI work at all: neither the menus on the panel nor (Gnome) keyboard shortcuts to launch apps do anything, which makes the system unusable. More generally (ie, besides a solution to this particular problem with gnome-keyring), is there a way for me to make sure xmonad will not place windows on parts of my screen that are inaccessible when my laptop is by itself? I think I have been experiencing a similar difficulty with Skype, where it would start but I couldn't see it. I thought: Skype crashed again, let me delete its config. That worked, but now I think it might have worked because Skype (by remembering its previous window position) was asking xmonad to place it on the external screen which was not (at that time) connected to the computer and thus its window stayed invisible for me (though skype was running). Not sure this made any sense, I tried my best. : ) Many thanks for any help and best! ~l

runOrRaiseNext lost functionality in xmonad 0.9?

I used to have the following line in my xmonad.hs to bind Win+F to either open a new firefox or switch to an existing one in a way that would work across multiple Ubuntu versions: ((modMask, xK_f), runOrRaiseNext "firefox-3.5 || firefox3 || firefox" (className =? "Firefox" <||> className =? "Shiretoko")) The ||'s would be interpreted by the shell, first trying firefox-3.5, then if it didn't work firefox3, etc. This worked great. But upgrading to xmonad 0.9.1-2 (installed Lucid Lynx) this functionality broke. Now nothing happens when I press Win+F, and I receive no errors. If I just put "firefox" then it works, but "firefox || firefox" does not, leading me to believe the command is no longer executed through the shell. Is this intentional? If it is, is there a way that xmonad provides for me to query what's in $PATH so I can bind the right version of firefox?

Today I tried using SeamlessRDP, but xmonad just went crazy with those windows from the WinXP vm. Is there any chance to get that working? Did anyone try to use SeamlessRDP with xmonad yet? Cheers, Thomas

newbie can't load modules

I am running ubuntu 10.04, and I get an error on import Xmonad. ghc-pkg check shows multiple broken packages. I am not a programmer, but I've used xmonad with pleasure on other distributions. Any thoughts on what I can do to fix my system? I've reinstalled ghc and xmonad et al but to no avail. -- Daniel Goldin 626.817.2462

RFC: Handling fullscreen with layouts

As mentioned in another mail, I'm currently experimenting with handling fullscreening applications in the layout itself, using layout messages. I'll highlight the approach here. First, we'll need a new layout message: data FullscreenMessage = AddFullscreen Window | RemoveFullscreen Window deriving (Typeable) instance Message FullscreenMessage This message will be sent to all layouts when a window requests fullscreen through the _NET_WM_STATE protocol, using a special event hook (resembling the fullscreenEventHook in X.H.EwmhDesktops, but sending messages instead of modifying the window). Also, we'll need a manage hook that sends an AddFullscreen on the window if it starts out with the fullscreen property. There are a few disadvantages to this approach: * Complexity - this is a lot more code than a simple event hook * More configuration - you need to add a manage hook and a layout modifier in addition to the event hook to use this * Floating windows are difficult to handle. I have tried to hack together a layout modifier that would call the X monad in order to fullscreen floating windows, but even if it works it's going to be ugly * Youtube fullscreen won't work with this, unless you add another manage hook like this: className =? "Npviewer.bin" --> doFullFloat I've attached the module I'm currently keeping in my .xmonad/lib directory, implementing all of this. Does anyone have any thoughts about it? -- Audun Skaugen

Dear Henrique, Wirt and Lythis, Thank you for your great help. I added isFullscreen --> doF W.focusDown <+> doFullFloat which does allow me to use windows in other monitors without making the Youtube video disappear. The downside is that it works *for as long as I am careful not to accidentally return focus to the fullscreen video*. Once that happens, the video is gone for good if I switch to another monitor/window. But even with this small imperfection it is already useful. (Is there a way around this?) @Lythis: I also tried Gnash, but found that the CPU usage stays at 100% even after the Youtube video stops playing... : / It does handle the screen resizing much better than Adobe's player, though. I had the impression that the small-size mid-screen bar issue was a property of the player used by the site and flash version. At least it behaves that same way on certain sites for me using metacity too. Definitely could be wrong about that though. small problems with doFullFloat

Dear all, I love using xmonad and would like to thank the developers for this wonderful piece of software. It really added a lot to the usability of my computer! Three small issues that I have been living with for some time, but am wondering if others know how to solve: To make Youtube videos display in fullscreen, I googled and then appended this last line to my myManageHook: myManageHook = [ appName =? "Skype" --> doFloat, -- other lines with appName/className/title --> doFloat composeOne [ isFullscreen -?> doFullFloat ] ] [Am I doing this right?] Problem 1: This solution sort of worked: now the Firefox window expands after I click the "fullscreen" button on Youtube, but not as it should since the Youtube control bar stays halfway across the screen. [See attached screenshot.] It looks as if the control bar is being positioned "too early" while the window is still being maximized. That is the first problem. Problem 2: The second problem is that the moment I move focus away from this screen (I have two monitors) the full-screen video disappears. Eg, if I move my mouse to the second monitor to edit an email then the full-screen video disappears. If anyone can help me solve these two issues, I would be very grateful. I am using xmonad 0.9.1 on Ubuntu 10.04 and am attaching my xmonad.hs. Best, Lara

mouse buttons "button8" and "button9" don't wok

Hi, I'm using mouse bindings and want to add my "forward" and "back" buttons, but get an "not in scope" error when I do so.
