Debugging xmonad (also issue 225)

Hello all, I'm trying to improve the proposed patch for issue 225, by adding a configuration option to toggle its behavior. So far, I applied the old patch, added the variable to control the behavior, and tried to use the setting to decide which behavior to use (see the attached patch, sorry if it's wrongly formatted but I'm not used to darcs yet). The problem: with clickToFocus (the option I've added) turned to False (i.e., the click changes the focus but still goes to the application), everything works as expected. But setting it to True (i.e., keeps the default xmonad's behavior) xmonad just freezes after I click on any window (setting before calling startx or recompiling inside xmonad doesn't solve that, either). So, how do I debug xmonad to find where I made a mistake? Also, note that I'm somewhat new to haskell, so imperative programming still cripples my thought. -- Ivan Sichmann Freitas GNU/Linux user #509059

Spotify advertisement and Xmonad

Hi, Recently I noticed that the Linux version of Spotify no longer requires a Premium account and I installed it again. But when using with Xmonad I can not get rid of the advertising popups that appear when you are inactive in Spotify. Without Xmonad you just click and it goes, but now it stays forever. It is very annoying. Any ideas about how to fix this? Does it happen to you also? Regards.

mod-shift-q is Harmful

I just lost a lot of computation when a long-running program of mine was unceremoniously destroyed by xmonad. Now, I take almost full responsibility for this mishap, because I *did* in fact instruct xmonad to obliterate my entire X11 session by issuing the keys `mod-shift-q'. However, that instruction was a mistake; I didn't at all have that action in mind when my fingers went for it---and I'm a longtime user who almost never presses that! A goal of xmonad is to make the user more efficient, but I think this kind of efficiency is not what is intended! I'm no fan of forcibly hand-holding people, but I think it would be wise at least to show people up front how to configure xmonad to confirm this request (especially if it can be determined that information would be destroyed). Even better, a vanilla xmonad should probably come already configured with such a basic safety mechanism (a power user who doesn't want to be pestered with such trivial second-guessing could disable it). Some people use NoBorders as workaround, but the window is still moveable. I mean real fullscreen as the window can't be moved by the user and of course won't have any borders without any workaround. This applies for mplayer's fullscreen mode, not for SDL.

Instead, the background is shown first and then the window. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? xmonad-0.9.2-2 (arch) Please provide any additional information below. This issue is the same as Issue no. 322. Apparently the issue was closed then and has reppeared sometime later.

Bug tracker maintenance: changing owners

Cleaning up maintainer fields (contrib)

I've started cleaning up the xmonad-contrib maintainer fields to orphan modules that are marked as maintained by people who have long since moved on. Some are obvious, like Andrea's, but for the others two weeks ago I sent out a "phone home" email to the people who've not been around since sending a patch years ago. Most of them have current emails, so after 9 Jan if I've not heard back from them I'm planning to mark their modules orphaned. Two people no longer have working emails. Please if any one knows how to contact Miikka Koskinen or James Webb, forward their contact info to me off list, or simply ask them if they want to keep maintainership and if so, to provide a current maintainer email address. Aftwerward I'm planning to start an adopt an orphan drive for modules that still see a lot of use and potential development, and to mark stable the ones that haven't changed in years. The ones I have on my "to orphan" list so far are Spencer's, Dons', Andrea's, Roundy's, and Roman C's (he told me he's moved on.) Thoughts, comments? -- wmw

Select grid shape and sort elements for XMonad.Actions.GridSelect

Hello everybody, I have decided to post my patch to improve GridSelect so that you can choose the grid shape and you can sort elements. I decided to do this patch because I don't like the idea to use a diamond grid for my workspaces without any order. It is too confusing for me. With my patch gridselect can show workspaces in a row sorted by tag. The defaultGSConfig has not been touched so that my patch will not break existent configuration using that. If you want to show and sort workspaces in a row you can change your xmonad.hs by putting this: gridselectWorkspace defaultGSConfig { gs_shaper = line, gs_elementSort = sort } where sort is the function from the list module.
