Recently, I have begun using blobs for my own project. It already has many features I need and the code is very readble (although there could be more documentation). As these projects are all about give and take, I would like to make my extensions publicly available. Wher should I send them and how? Should I use darcs send? (Never worked with it.) My first extension is about a more flexible placement of node labels: Instead of just above or below, I need other placements as well. Thus, I modified the Justify data type to my needs and migrated it to Network.hs. Now, the following placements are possible, best used with rectangular nodes. Above ----------------------------------------- | Top | | | | | LeftBeside|LeftInside Center RightInside|RightBeside | | | | | Bottom | ----------------------------------------- Below Especially I need nodes which form boxes around the centered label. But for this I need a possibility to call (logical)TextExtend from outside of NetworkView (in the node creation routine). Where do I get this mystical DC () value?? More to come! Cheers Bernd

extend DisplayOptions and correct View Menu Extend the DisplayOptions type with EdgeLabel. The View Menu wasn't indicating correctly which DisplayOptions are being used. This patch fixs that problem substituting RadioItems by checkable MenuItems.

Nodes with ports

Hello Im trying to change Blobs to become an editor for a language which is not exactly a directed graph. In such system I have the notion of ports in nodes; which node have a previously fixed number of labelled ports and instead of having edges between nodes, its only allowed having edges connecting ports. For the picture of Malcolm Wallace "Failure Propagation and Transformation Calculus" in Blobs web page it seems to me that such framework addresses the same situation. So what I would like to know is if someone have ever found this problem and if someone have some idea for a way of implementing this generalization of directed graphs. One solution is create so many new nodes as the sum in the range of primitive nodes of the sum of ports for that specific node. Them it is necessary to force some constrains in the graph like the user cannot create edges from/to primitive nodes and the selection of a primitive node implies the automatic selection of it self and its port nodes. Does anyone have a better idea? Regards Miguel Vilaça

Customizing display of Node/Edge values

Hello I am thinking of extending the InfoKind to support types with a finite amount of values that should be edited from a dedicated dialog box rather than a text edit control (for edge and node values). Does this make sense and what aproach do you think would be the most sensible for this kind of change? - Einar Karttunen

Dragging not working under linux with wxGtk

Hello It appears that the dragging functionality does not work under Debian Linux with WxWindows 2.6.2.1 and WxHaskell 0.9.4. This affects both dragging and multiple selection. - Einar Karttunen

For information, here are some of the recent changes I have made in the darcs repository for Blobs. Regards, Malcolm Wed Nov 16 11:06:33 GMT 2005 Malcolm.Wallace(a)cs.york.ac.uk * allow editing of edge info. It is now possible to edit the info field on an edge, just like the info field on a node. (Through a context menu, or pressing 'i' whilst the edge is selected.) Wed Nov 16 12:06:56 GMT 2005 Malcolm.Wallace(a)cs.york.ac.uk * make basic app demo slightly more interesting. Now that we can edit the info on an edge, let's make the simple application demo slightly more interesting. The nodes now collect all the numbers on their incoming edges into a list. Then the sum of the numbers in a node is pushed out along its outgoing edges. If you keep hitting the 'perform analysis' step, it will eventually reach a fixed point. The class Analysis was too restrictive, defining only a single graph-altering operation (and its reversion) per application. Replace it with a datatype storing many possible graph operations. Wed Nov 16 20:23:16 GMT 2005 Malcolm.Wallace(a)cs.york.ac.uk * Permit multiple selection, which can be dragged as one unit. Rather than being allowed to select only one node, edge, or control point, it is now possible to add multiple items into the selection by holding down the Meta key when clicking an entity. (Meta = Cmd (helicopter) key on MacOS, probably either Alt or Box on Windows.) The Meta-click acts as a toggle, so you can remove items from the selection also. The multiple selection can be dragged to new positions on the canvas, just like a single selection. However, because of this, it only makes sense to allow nodes and control points within a multiple selection. An edge has no location independent of the nodes/controls, so cannot itself be moved. Thu Nov 17 18:31:52 GMT 2005 Malcolm.Wallace(a)cs.york.ac.uk * Dragging an area on the canvas now makes a multiple selection. Dragging out a rectangle on the background canvas now selects all the nodes and control points within the dragged area. I haven't worked out how to display the rectangle itself. The multiple selection can then be moved by dragging any one of its items. Change the representation of the palette of node shapes very slightly. The palette is now stored as a part of the document (network) itself, rather than in the state of the GUI. This means when you load a new document, you automatically get the palette it was built with. Also, a node can now store either the name of its shape (for lookup in the palette), or its full description, with the shape name being preferred in most circumstances. Introduction

Welcome to the mailing list for the Blobs diagram editor. I'm hoping that some new members will tell us about their interest in Blobs - in what applications do you forsee using it? What application-specific needs do you think you will want to layer on top of the basic editor? Maybe this will provoke some thoughts about how best to design the interfaces between the editor and user-code, to promote greater generality and re-usability. Arjan and Martijn have already presented (on the web etc) a lot of information about their Dazzle tool, from which Blobs was born. For myself, I have developed a theoretical framework called the "Failure Propagation and Transformation Calculus", used for analysing the safety of systems architectures. Nodes represent hardware/software components and communications protocols, whilst edges represent error flows between them (currently based on dataflow and control flow). The user annotates each component with an expression denoting its ability to fail, and its response to incoming failures. The calculus then determines the maximal set of failures that can flow through any edge of the diagram. My analysis routine takes an input graph, and returns the same graph, but with every edge annotated with some new information, which is simply passed back into Blobs for visualisation. However, I can certainly imagine that other people will want to do more complex operations on graphs. Let's hear about them! Regards, Malcolm

Blobs as a visual interface for DSEL

Hi, I have always thought there was a strong connection between a DSEL and a diagram editor. But if Haskell is a language of choice for DSEL, creating a diagramming front-end seemed in Haskell seemed quite a lot of work. And good diagramming tools are very rare: I use Dia, but it would require customizing shapes and other things to be used as a diagram producer, and needs a post-processor to adapt its file-format to the input of a DSEL processor. So I have great hope that Blobs will be the solution, when it is released, towards a full Haskell tool-chain. Alain
