ANNOUNCE: HOpenGL 1.02 released
by Sven Panne 21 Apr '02

21 Apr '02

HOpenGL, a Haskell binding for OpenGL and GLUT version 1.02 I am pleased to announce the thirteenth release of the Haskell binding for GL 1.2.1 / GLU 1.3 / GLUT 3.7beta. It offers easy access to *the* industrial strength 3D graphics API and a GUI toolkit. More details about HOpenGL can be found at http://haskell.org/HOpenGL This is a mainly a compatibility release for >= GHC-5.x, including some minor extensions. What's new: * Added support for 3D textures: texImage3D, texSubImage3D, copyTexSubImage3D. * Added a "make install" target to add a HOpenGL package to GHC. This makes using HOpenGL much easier: A simple ghc -package HOpenGL --make MyCoolApp.hs is enough for most applications. * GLUT exports its own versions of System.exit{With,Failure} now to avoid GHC's problems of those functions if they were issued during callbacks. * Fixed quite a few library incompatibilities for GHC >= 5.02. * Fixed some minor GLU incompatibilities. * Fixed GLUT game mode exports, so you could actually use it now! :-} * Changed configure to detect the native (i.e. non-Mesa) OpenGL as the default. This is more conforming with the OpenGL ABI spec. * Re-animated --with-hc and --with-green-card configure flags. HOpenGL-1.02 has been tested on the following platforms: * ix86, SuSE Linux 7.3, Mesa 3.4.2, bleeding edge GHC from CVS * ix86, Windows 2000, Cygwin (DLL 1.3.10), NVIDIA DetonatorXP * drivers 28.32, GHC 5.02.3 and 5.03-20020204 * SPARC, Solaris 2.7, Mesa 4.0.2, GHC 5.02.3 It should work on any platform with a recent GHC, too. As always, feedback and/or patches are highly welcome. Have fun! Sven

Re: HC&AR (May edition) - more suggestions

> Haskell Communities and Activities Report > http://www.haskell.org/communities/ > > The current plan is to get contributions in by the end of April, > and to get the collective report out early next month (*). I wrote "new suggestions are welcome". Several Haskellers have already contacted me about applications of Haskell (Haskell as a mere tool for someone's work or research) this week, and during these exchanges, two further interesting topics have emerged: 1. Tips, tricks & tutorials It seems that some Haskellers have documented their own hard-won experience to help others. They have been working on web pages, short papers, tours, and tutorials touching on introductory examples of monads&co, giving guided tours and explanations of prelude, libraries & syntax, or tips about programming and resource tuning, even explaining the internals of GHC (scary;), or interpreting Hugs error messages. If you have, or know about such a valuable resource, please send me a link and a brief description. Ultimately, all these things should be linked from the Haskell bookshelf (which is not limited to books:): http://haskell.cs.yale.edu/bookshelf/ but many resources are not yet linked in there (wasn't there some group of pragmatic programmers choosing Haskell as their language to be learned this year? And another group working on a new tutorial?), so we'll have a section on this in the next HC&A Report. 2. Haskell publication overview We already had a preview of the JFP special issue on Haskell last time, but we should make this a permanent section. So, if during the last 6 months, you've finished your Haskell-related thesis, or published your book, or if some Haskell-related conference proceedings have appeared, or you know about any other relevant publications during that period, please let me know. Btw, we don't have good coverage of Haskell research groups yet (apart from those who are covered by reports on their software releases). And if you know Haskellers who are on other lists, but don't read the main list here, please feel free to point them to the report's home page. I'm also trying to contact folks who have released software recently, but please don't wait for me to get round to you. Just send me an email if you're willing to contribute a brief report on your great new tool! Please keep those contact offers and summaries coming!-) Claus PS. I seem to have problems getting answers from some people I've contacted about the report. I hope I'm not in people's kill-files yet, or that I'm running into your anti-spam mechanisms?-) The emails don't bounce, and there's no vacation message either, so if you were expecting me to contact you personally, but haven't heard from me, could you please get in touch? Thanks.

ANNOUNCE: FunGEn-0.1 released!
by Andre W B Furtado 19 Apr '02

19 Apr '02

----------------------- FunGEn Functional Game Engine ----------------------- I am pleased to announce the first release of FunGEn, a 2D platform-independent game engine implemented in and for Haskell, using HOpenGL. Actually, FunGEn supports: * Initialization, updating, removing, rendering and grouping routines for game objects; * Definition of a game background (or map), including texture-based maps and tile maps; * Reading and intepretation of the player's keyboard input; * Collision detection; * Time-based functions and pre-defined game actions; * Loading and displaying of 24-bit bitmap files; * Some debugging and game performance evaluation facilities; * Sound support (actually for windows platforms only... :-[ ) You can download and find more info about FunGEn in: http://www.cin.ufpe.br/~haskell/fungen Your feedback is highly welcome! Nice coding... -- Andre W B Furtado

RE: Confused about seq and forms.

Jay Cox wrote: > > > Any referal to a paper describing the differences between HNF and WHNF > (yes, that includes yours Simon PJ!) would be appreciated. Actually, > I really, really want that reference to at least read that > bit about WHNF. I found "Functional Programming" by Field and Harrison (ISBN 0201192497) useful: An expression E is in HNF if: 1. E is a constant or a variable 2. E is an expression of the form \x_1.\x_2...\x_n.M, where expression M is not a redex, n > 0 3. E is of the form P E_1 E_2 ... E_n, where P is a function of arity k > n, n >= 0 and E is in WHNF if: 1. E is a constant or a variable 2. E is an expression of the form \x.M, for any sub-expression M 3. E is of the form P E_1 E_2 ... E_n, where P is a function of arity k > n, n >= 0 In other words, as I understand it, the difference between HNF and WHNF is that any lambda abstraction is in WHNF but only those lambda abstractions that have irreducible bodies are also in HNF. In all other respects WHNF and HNF are identical, that is, any variable and constant is in both WHNF and HNF, and any patially applied function is also in both forms. Any corrections are welcome! konst
