Mixing monadic and non-monadic functions

Hello, I posted this question to comp.lang.functional, and someone suggested that I try this group instead. I'm struggling with monads. Well, not monads themselves, but mixing them with non-monadic functions. Here's my base case: someFunc :: String -> IO [a] ... ax <- someFunc a bx <- someFunc b assertBool "fail" $ length ax == length bx I don't like the assignments; the typing is redundant, if I have a lot of asserts like this, and the "variables" are temporary. What I'd much rather have is: ... assertBool "fail" $ (length $ someFunc a) == (length $ someFunc b) which is more readable, to my eye. The only solution which has been suggested that may work is liberal use of the liftM variants, but this gets *really* tedious and obtuse. Is there an elegant way to do what I want to do, or am I stuck with procedural-style assignments and bunches of temp vars? However, this technological breakthrough in hardware is not accompanied by similar progress in software technology. Parallel and distributed programming is still dominated by low-level techniques such as explicit message passing. This low level of abstraction makes programming these systems exceedingly difficult, time-consuming, and error-prone. Hence, parallel and distributed computing requires new programming models which liberate programmers from low-level concerns and increase programming productivity while maintaining reasonable trade-offs between level of abstraction and runtime performance. I would think to take an accurate (depends how you define accurate) arbitrary precision floating point is needed... gmp 2 supports this, but does not have a log function. The power series is the way calculators do it... you could always write a small library of operations on pairs of Integers to do arbitrary precision floating point, then use the power series. Keean.

The aim of the colloquium is to bring together practitioners and researchers from academia, industry and government to present research results, and exchange experience, ideas, and solutions for their problems in theoretical aspects of computing. We believe that this will help the developing countries to strengthen their research, teaching and development in computer science and engineering, to improve the links between developing countries and developed countries, and to establish collaboration in research and education. The technical program lasts five days including two days for tutorials and three days for a workshop. We plan to organize such a colloquium every 18 months jointly with a UNU-IIST training school in a developing country, and each time there will be a theme and a focus. The school participants will also attend the technical program of the colloquium. A small registration fee will be charged to cover meals tutorial handouts and proceedings only. There will be also a limited amount of grant that participants, tutorial and workshop speakers from developing countries can apply. Application should be submitted together with their tutorial proposals or papers to the workshop. The first ICTAC will be jointly organized by the Guizhou Academy of Sciences and UNU-IIST during 20-24 September 2004.
