I am pleased to announce version 0.10.16 "Altocumulus Stratiformis Perlucidus Undulatus" of the C interface generator C->Haskell. Among bug fixes, the system includes the following features wrt to the previous major release: * Marshalling support for bit masks represented as enumeration types * Added fun hooks * GHC's package system is now supported * Support for bitfields (they are correctly handled when computing struct offsets and they can be accessed using set and get hooks) * Added class hooks Thanks to all the people who have helped with patches and bug reports. The conference serves to bridge the gaps between different communities --- including but not limited to those devoted to formal methods, software and hardware verification, static analysis, programming languages, software engineering, real-time systems, and communications protocols --- that have traditionally had little interaction but share common interests in, and techniques for, tool development. In particular, by providing a venue for the discussion of common problems, heuristics, algorithms, data structures and methodologies, TACAS aims to support researchers in their quest to improve the utility, reliability, flexibility and efficiency of tools for building systems. Tool descriptions and case studies with a conceptual message and theoretical papers with a clear link to tool construction are all encouraged. The specific topics covered by the conference include, but are not limited to, the following. Specification and verification techniques Theorem-proving and model-checking System construction and transformation techniques Static and run-time analysis Compositional and refinement-based methodologies Testing and test-case generation Analytical techniques for real-time, hybrid and safety-critical systems Tool environments and tool architectures Applications and case studies As TACAS addresses a heterogeneous audience, potential authors are strongly encouraged to write about their ideas in general and jargon-independent, rather than application- and domain-specific, terms. Authors reporting on tools or case studies are strongly encouraged to indicate how their experimental results can be reproduced and confirmed independently. TACAS is a member of the European Joint Conference on Theory and Practice of Software (ETAPS), which is the primary European forum for academic and industrial researchers working on topics related to Software Science. After ETAPS 98 in Lisbon, ETAPS 99 in Amsterdam, ETAPS 2000 in Berlin, ETAPS 2001 in Genova, and ETAPS 2002 in Grenoble, ETAPS 2003 is the sixth joint conference in this series. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES As with other ETAPS conferences, TACAS accepts two types of contributions: - Research papers (up to 16 pages) cover one or more of the topics above, including tool development and case studies from a perspective of scientific research. H98 Report: input functions

In 7.1, the Report says of getChar, getContents and friends: "By default, these input functions echo to standard output." This would mean that the example given: main = interact (filter isAscii) would print the input with all ASCII characters duplicated. Surely it should say that if the standard input is a terminal device the input is echoed on that device. Or maybe the sentence should be deleted. (Hugs does the echoing to stdout for getChar, but not for hGetChar stdin or getContents.)

In order to construct such large systems in a systematic manner, the focus in the development methodologies has switched in the last two decades from functional issues to structural issues: both data and functions are encapsulated into software units which are integrated into large systems by means of various techniques supporting reusability and modifiability. This encapsulation principle is essential to both the object-oriented and the more recent component-based sofware engineering paradigms. Formal methods have been applied successfully to the verification of medium-sized programs in protocol and hardware design. However, their application to the development of large systems requires more emphasis on specification, modeling and validation techniques supporting the concepts of reusability and modifiability, and their implementation in new extensions of existing programming languages like Java. The objective of this symposium is to bring together researchers and practioners in the areas of software engineering and formal methods to discuss the concepts of reusability and modifiability in component-based and object-oriented software systems. The following issues related to modifiability and reusability in components and objects will be discussed by leading experts in the fields of Formal Methods and Software Engineering: - Specification - Verification - Validation - Modeling techniques - Architectures - Programming languages - Semantics - Type theory - Design methodology - Compositionality - Refinement - Theorem-proving - Model checking - Tools FORMAT The Symposium is a four days event in the style of the former REX workshops, organized to provide an atmosphere that fosters collaborative work, discussions and interaction. Paratrooper in Haskell

Hi, I have implemented the game paratrooper in Haskell, and put it online. Quite glad since this is my first presentable Haskell program. Yeah, its fun to play :) I have tried to make the source readable (literate?) and made it into a pdf file. I still do have a feeling though, that though this program is in Haskell, it doesn't quite fully contain the real Haskell "style". Is that true? Lazy IO?

Is there any way to make the IO Monad lazy? The simplified version of my problem is that I want to generate an infinite structure from an IOArray and then consume only the relevant part of it. The real version of my problem is that the IOArray is embedded 4 API layers deep and it would be a lot of effort to change all those APIs and dependent code for this 1 change. Sengan
