EWSCS are organized by CIDEC, a joint initiative of Institute of Cybernetics (Tallinn), Tallinn University of Technology and University of Tartu for the advancement of higher education in computer science and information technology. EWSCS'05 is the tenth event of the series. The main objective of EWSCS is to expose Estonian, Baltic, and Nordic graduate students in computer science (but also interested students from elsewhere) to frontline research topics usually not covered within the regular curricula. The subject of the schools is general computer science, with a bias towards theory, this comprising both algorithms, complexity and models of computation, incl. cryptography, and semantics, logic and programming theory. The working language of the schools is English. Programme The schools' scientific programme consists of short courses by renowned specialists and a student session. Venue Palmse is a small settlement 80 kms to the east from Tallinn in the county of Lääne-Viru. It is renowned for a large manor that used to belong to the von Pahlen family, today hosting the visitors' center of the Lahemaa National Park, a museum, and a hotel. Tallinn, Estonia's capital, is famous for its picturesque medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Call for Papers SEFM 2005 Third IEEE International Conference on SOFTWARE ENGINEERING AND FORMAL METHODS Koblenz, Germany 7-9 September 2005 http://sefm2005.uni-koblenz.de The Third IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering and Formal Methods (SEFM 2005) will be held in Koblenz, Germany, 7-9 September 2005. Affiliated workshops and tutorials will be organized on 5th and 6th September 2005, and calls for workshops and tutorials will be circulated separately by the Workshop/Tutorial Chair. SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES The aim of the conference is to bring together practitioners and researchers from academia, industry and government to advance the state of the art in formal methods, to scale up their application in software industry and to encourage their integration with practical engineering methods. LOCATION The 2000-year-old town of Koblenz is situated in the picturesque landscape of the Rhine and Moselle and surrounded by four low mountain ranges. In 2002 the UNESCO ranked the upper Middle Rhine valley one of the most beautiful and oldest man-made landscapes, among the world cultural heritages. Nowadays, many companies have diverted their Web sites into interactive, completely-automated, Web-based applications (such as Amazon, on-line banking, or travel agencies) with a high complexity that requires appropriate specification and verification techniques and tools. Systematic, formal approaches to the analysis and verification can address the problems of this particular domain with automated and reliable tools that also incorporate semantic aspects. We solicit paper on formal methods and techniques applied to Web sites, Web services or Web-based applications, such as: * rule-based approaches to Web site analysis, certification, specification, verification, and optimization * formal models for describing and reasoning about Web sites * model-checking, synthesis and debugging of Web sites * abstract interpretation and program transformation applied to the semantic Web WWV'05 provides a forum for researchers from the communities of Rule-based programming, Automated Software Engineering, and Web-oriented research to facilitate the cross-fertilization and the advancement of hybrid methods that combine the three areas. Announcement ------------ A Computer Algebra program DoCon-2.08 is released: http://www.botik.ru/~mechvel/ click at docon-2.08 (Russian site), ftp.botik.ru/pub/local/Mechveliani/docon/ (same), http://www.haskell.org/docon/distrib/ (USA site) DoCon-2.08 is a library of Haskell functions and data structures. It is written in an extension of Haskell-98 including multiparametric classes, overlapping instances and `undecidable' instances. It was tested under the Glasgow Haskell system of 6.2.2, under Linux. Submissions are invited on all topics ranging from principles to practice, from foundations to features, from abstraction to application. The scope includes all languages that encourage functional programming, including both purely applicative and imperative languages, as well as languages with objects and concurrency. Particular topics of interest include: * Applications and domain-specific languages: Systems programming, scientific and numerical computing, symbolic computing and artificial intelligence, databases, graphical user interfaces, multimedia programming, application scripting, system administration, distributed-systems and web programming, XML processing, security. * Foundations: Formal semantics, lambda calculus, type theory, monads, continuations, control, state, effects. * Design: Algorithms and data structures, modules and type systems, concurrency and distribution, components and composition, relations to object-oriented and logic programming. * Implementation: Abstract machines, compile-time and run-time optimization, just-in-time compilers, memory management.
