Announcement: wxHaskell version 0.8 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- <http://wxhaskell.sourceforge.net> I am pleased to announce a new release of wxHaskell. The library is now 1 year old, and more than 4000 downloads further. This new release has support for the powerful wxGrid control, managed resources, and system colors. Futhermore, all object references are now checked, raising a Haskell exception if they are not valid. The MacOS X version is much more stable now than the previous release. Binary installers are provided for MacOS X, Linux (RPM), and Windows. The webpage has a screenshot of a heap profile viewer for GHC written in wxHaskell by Wei Tan. There is also a *draft* version of an article about the design of wxHaskell. I have to submit a final version this Friday and any comments are very welcome. All the best, Daan Leijen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wxHaskell is a portable GUI library for Haskell. The goal of the project is to provide an industrial strength portable GUI library, but without the burden of developing (and maintaining) one ourselves. wxHaskell is therefore build on top of wxWidgets -- a comprehensive C++ library that is portable across all major GUI platforms; including GTK, Windows, X11, and MacOS X. Furthermore, it is a mature library (in development since 1992) that supports a wide range of widgets with native look-and-feel, and it has a very active community (ranked among the top 25 most active projects on sourceforge). Since most of the interface is automatically generated from the wxEiffel binding, the current release of wxHaskell already supports about 75% of the wxWindows functionality -- about 2900 methods in 500 classes with 1400 constant definitions. wxHaskell has been build with GHC 6.x on Windows, MacOS X and Unix systems with GTK. A binary distribution is available for Windows, Linux (RPM) and MacOS X. And even if you don't intend to write GUI's yourself, it will be fun to check out the screenshots at <http://wxhaskell.sourceforge.net>. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Version 0.8 ----------- Non backward compatible changes: - Added wildcards argument to the "fileSaveDialog" function. - Removed the call to "buttonSetDefault" in the "defaultButton" property since GTK seems to enlarge the button in that case. - Removed alignment argument for text controls - Removed sorted and labels argument for choice and combo boxes. - Removed sorted argument for listboxes. - Added default "stretch" to every toplevel layout, assuring that such layout gets at least all available space assigned. - (un)set "maximize box" when "resizeable" is set. - Removed default "wxTAB_TRAVERSAL" style on frames (to make the grid work correctly). - Renamed "WXCore.WxcClassTypes" to "WXCore.WxcClassInfo". Backward compatible additions: - Added pure "bitmap" and "sound" - Added "variable" objects (mutable variables) - Added custom control demo. - Made "refresh" erase the background too. - Added "children" attribute for windows. - Added "border" attribute for windows. - Added "tabTraversal" attribute for windows. - Added wxGrid events and demo (samples/wx/Grid.hs). - Improved signatures for wxGrid. - Added "changes.txt" file :-) - Added "HAS_RADIO_MENU_ITEMS" to "isDefined". - Added support for radio menu items. - New wxHaskell+HOpenGL sample added to the contributions. Thanks to Shelarcy and Sean Seefried. - Added "Align" and "Wrapped" classes to set alignment and wrap mode for text controls. - Added "Sorted" class to set the sort mode of choice, combo box, and listbox controls. - Added "creation time" attributes that use reflective attributes not compositional (and thus not so nice), but very convenient! - Added "entry" as shorthand for "textEntry" - Added "SystemColor" and "colorSystem" to get standard system colors. - Defaulted background color of "Frame"s to Color3DFace (as a Panel). - Made the definition of "Closure" in "wrappers.h" more liberal to support wxOCaml better. - Added "frameCentre" method - Huge internal changes: split up wxcClasses in three files and added support for managed objects like bitmaps. Also added checks for NULL pointers. Bug fixes: - HtmlLinkClicked events are now properly generated. - Fixed bug that crashed wxHaskell when a tree control had the focus and a key was pressed. Thanks to Olivier Spier for sending a fix. - The "item" attribute of a list control always returned the first item and disregarded the parameter. Thanks to Olivier Spier for sending a fix.

by Matthias Klusch 27 Jul '04

27 Jul '04

+++ Apologies for multiple copies due to cross posting +++ Call for Papers ****************************************************** 4th International Joint Conference AAMAS on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems July 25 - 29, 2005 Utrecht University, The Netherlands ****************************************************** http://www.aamas2005.nl Important dates =============== Electronic abstracts due: DECEMBER 6, 2004 Electronic paper submission deadline: DECEMBER 10, 2004 Notification: February 25, 2005 About the conference ==================== Agents are one of the most prominent and attractive technologies in computer science at the beginning of the new milennium. The technologies, methods, and theories of agents and multiagent systems are currently contributing to many diverse domains such as information retrieval, user interfaces, electronic commerce, robotics, computer mediated collaboration, computer games, education and training, ubiquitous computing, and social simulation. They not only are a very promising technology, but are also emerging as a new way of thinking, a conceptual paradigm for analyzing problems and for designing systems, for dealing with complexity, distribution, and interactivity, while providing a new perspective on computing and intelligence. The AAMAS conference series was initiated in 2002 as a merger of three highly successful related events: AGENTS (International Conference on Autonomous Agents), ICMAS (International Conference on Multi-Agent Systems), and ATAL (International Workshop on Agent Theories, Architectures, and Languages). The aim of the joint conference is to provide a single, high-profile, internationally renowned forum for research in the theory and practice of autonomous agents and multiagent systems. In particular, it brings together the world's researchers active in this important, vibrant, and rapidly growing field. AAMAS 2005 events include workshops and tutorials given by distinguished experts in the field, as well as an agent school, and doctoral mentoring program. Please check http://www.aamas2005.nl for latest information on the conference. Topics of interest ================== Topics of interest to AAMAS-05 include, but are not restricted to: * agents & complex systems; computational ecosystems * agent architectures; perception, action & planning in agents * agents & cognitive models * agents & networks: web agents, semantic web, grid, web services, P2P * agent communication: languages, semantics, pragmatics & protocols * agent-mediated electronic commerce & trading agents * agent-oriented software engineering & agent-oriented methodologies * agent programming languages, development environments & testbeds * applications of autonomous agents & multi-agent systems * artificial social systems; conventions, norms, social laws & institutions * autonomous robots & robot teams * coalition formation & teamwork; cooperative distributed problem solving * computational complexity in autonomous agents & multi-agent systems * cooperation & coordination; multi-agent planning * cooperative information systems, middle agents & brokers * distributed & multi-agent constraint satisfaction * game theoretic/economic foundations; algorithmic mechanism design * logics & formal models of agency; verification * multi-agent evolution, adaptation & learning * mobile agents * multi-agent simulation & modeling * negotiation, auctions, social choice mechanisms & argumentation * ontologies for agent systems * privacy & security issues in multi-agent systems * scalability & performance issues, robustness & dependability * synthetic agents; human-like, lifelike & believable qualities * theories of agency & autonomy * trust in agent systems; adjustable autonomy Submission ========== AAMAS-05 encourages the submission of theoretical, experimental, methodological, and applications papers. Theory papers should make clear the significance and relevance of their results to the AAMAS community. Similarly, applied papers should make clear both their scientific and technical contributions, and are expected to demonstrate a thorough evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses in practice. Papers that address isolated agent capabilities (for example, planning or learning) are discouraged unless they are placed in the overall context of autonomous agent architectures or multi-agent system organization and performance. A thorough evaluation is considered an essential component of any submission. Authors are also requested to make clear the implications of any theoretical and empirical results, as well as how their work relates to the state of the art in autonomous agents and multi-agent systems research as evidenced in, for example, previous AAMAS conferences. All submissions will be rigorously peer reviewed and evaluated on the basis of the quality of their technical contribution, originality, soundness, significance, presentation, understanding of the state of the art, and overall quality. In addition to conventional conference papers, AAMAS-05 also welcomes the submission of papers that focus on implemented systems, software, or robot prototypes. These papers require a demonstration of the prototype at the conference and should include a detailed project or system description specifying the hardware and software features and requirements. Please check http://www.aamas2005.nl/paper_submissions.htm for submission details. CFP - Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages 2005
by Manuel Hermenegildo 23 Jul '04

23 Jul '04

[ Apologies if you receive multiple copies. ] PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS Seventh International Symposium on Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages 2005 (PADL 05) http://www.unm.edu/~herme/padl05/ Long Beach, California, USA January 10-11, 2005 Co-located with ACM POPL, January 12-14, 2005 Paper submission deadline: September 10th Declarative languages build on sound theoretical foundations to provide attractive frameworks for application development. These languages have been successfully applied to a wide array of different real-world situations, including database management, active networks, software engineering, decision support systems, or music composition. New developments in theory and implementation have opened up new application areas. At the same time, the application of declarative languages to novel problems raises numerous interesting research issues. Well-known questions include designing for scalability, language extensions for application deployment, and programming environments. Thus, applications often drive the progress in the theory and implementation of declarative systems, and benefit from this progress as well. PADL is a forum for researchers and practioners to present original work emphasizing novel applications and implementation techniques for all forms of declarative concepts, including, functional, logic, constraints, etc. Topics of interest include: * Innovative applications of declarative languages. * Declarative domain-specific languages and applications. * Practical applications of theoretical results. * New language developments and their impact on applications. * Evaluation of implementation techniques on practical applications. * Novel implementation techniques relevant to applications. * Novel uses of declarative languages in the classroom. * Practical experiences. PADL 05 welcomes new ideas and approaches pertaining to applications and implementation of declarative languages, and is not limited to the scope of the first six PADL symposia (past proceedings can be found in Springer Verlag LNCS, numbers 1551, 1753, 1990, 2257, 2562, and 3057). In this occasion PADL is co-located, as traditionally, with ACM POPL, which will be held immediately following PADL, January 12-14. IMPORTANT DATES Paper Submission: September 10, 2004 Notification: October 10, 2004 Camera-ready: November 10, 2004 Symposium: January 10-11, 2005 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Authors should submit an electronic copy of the full paper (written in English) in Postscript (Level 2) or PDF. Submission should be completed using the electronic procedure available at the conference website. Papers must be no longer than 15 pages, written in 11-point font and with single spacing. Since the final proceedings will be published as Lecture Notes in Computer Science by Springer Verlag, authors are strongly encouraged to use the LNCS paper formatting guidelines for their submission. Each submission must include on its first page the paper title; authors and their affiliations; contact author's email and postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers, abstract, and three to four keywords. The keywords will be used to assist us in selecting appropriate reviewers for the paper. If electronic submission is impossible, please contact the program chairs for information on how to submit hard copies. MOST PRACTICAL PAPER AWARD A cash prize of US$500 will be awarded to the submission that is judged by the program committee to be the best in terms of practicality, originality, and clarity of presentation. The program committee may choose not to make an award; or may make multiple awards, in which case the award money will be evenly divided. Strange "let"
by Jinwoo Lee 21 Jul '04

21 Jul '04

Hi, I'm a Haskell newbie. I was trying several things with GHCi and found out that the expression "let a + b = 3" does not generate any errors. Prelude> let a + b = 3 Prelude> a <interactive>:1: Variable not in scope: `a' Prelude> b <interactive>:1: Variable not in scope: `b' Prelude> What does "let a + b = 3" mean in this case? I also tries with GHC compiler using the code below, but it generates no error. main :: IO () main = do let a + b = 3 putStrLn "Hello" Could somebody answer this? Jinwoo

Hyperlinking problem in Haddock
by Adrian Hey 21 Jul '04

21 Jul '04

Hello, Does anybody know how you hyperlink your Haddock to functions whose name ends with a prime. e.g. foldl' I've tried.. 'foldl\'' and 'foldl'' But neither works. In each case I get a link to foldl (unprimed version) followed by an isolated ' character. This is with Haddock version 0.6 BTW. Thanks -- Adrian Hey

Haskell support for the Eclipse IDE 0.4
by Leif Frenzel 21 Jul '04

21 Jul '04

Dear Haskellers, There is now a new version of the Haskell development support for the Eclipse IDE. The project has been moved to Sourceforge, and the new project website is at http://eclipsefp.sourceforge.net . The new version requires Eclipse 3.0. Installation is done using the built-in update manager in Eclipse. The most significant changes and new features are: - improved support for compilation with GHC - support for running GHCi in the IDE with files from the project loaded - the Haskell source editor is much more configurable now - Haskell projects in the workspace can be browsed with the new Module Browser View - several bugs fixed For the next releases, we will focus on integrating more tools, and we will also start to make the IDE more language-aware (outline, code assist, dependencies view). Any feedback is welcome. Ciao, Leif

generalised algebraic data types, existential types, and phantom types
by Abraham Egnor 20 Jul '04

20 Jul '04

I briefly skimmed the paper mentioned in a recent mailing on the ghc-users list that describes generalised algebraic data types (http://research.microsoft.com/Users/simonpj/papers/gadt/index.htm) my reaction can be summed up as "nifty!". I was curious to see if I could implement anything similar in current haskell, and ended up with the attached code. The main point of interest for me is the combination of phantom types and existential types; I'd never had the need to combine the two before. Is there any closer approximation possible? My code is close, but the type-safety isn't checked by the compiler (although it should be safe, if only the smart constructors are used), and it has that extra "Typeable" constraint. Abe
