Announcement: wxHaskell version 0.8 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- <http://wxhaskell.sourceforge.net> I am pleased to announce a new release of wxHaskell. The library is now 1 year old, and more than 4000 downloads further. This new release has support for the powerful wxGrid control, managed resources, and system colors. Futhermore, all object references are now checked, raising a Haskell exception if they are not valid. The MacOS X version is much more stable now than the previous release. Binary installers are provided for MacOS X, Linux (RPM), and Windows. The webpage has a screenshot of a heap profile viewer for GHC written in wxHaskell by Wei Tan. There is also a *draft* version of an article about the design of wxHaskell. I have to submit a final version this Friday and any comments are very welcome. The goal of the project is to provide an industrial strength portable GUI library, but without the burden of developing (and maintaining) one ourselves. wxHaskell is therefore build on top of wxWidgets -- a comprehensive C++ library that is portable across all major GUI platforms; including GTK, Windows, X11, and MacOS X. Furthermore, it is a mature library (in development since 1992) that supports a wide range of widgets with native look-and-feel, and it has a very active community (ranked among the top 25 most active projects on sourceforge). Since most of the interface is automatically generated from the wxEiffel binding, the current release of wxHaskell already supports about 75% of the wxWindows functionality -- about 2900 methods in 500 classes with 1400 constant definitions. wxHaskell has been build with GHC 6.x on Windows, MacOS X and Unix systems with GTK. A binary distribution is available for Windows, Linux (RPM) and MacOS X. And even if you don't intend to write GUI's yourself, it will be fun to check out the screenshots at <http://wxhaskell.sourceforge.net>. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Version 0.8 ----------- Non backward compatible changes: - Added wildcards argument to the "fileSaveDialog" function. - Removed the call to "buttonSetDefault" in the "defaultButton" property since GTK seems to enlarge the button in that case. - Removed alignment argument for text controls - Removed sorted and labels argument for choice and combo boxes. - Removed sorted argument for listboxes. - Added default "stretch" to every toplevel layout, assuring that such layout gets at least all available space assigned. - (un)set "maximize box" when "resizeable" is set. - Removed default "wxTAB_TRAVERSAL" style on frames (to make the grid work correctly). - Renamed "WXCore.WxcClassTypes" to "WXCore.WxcClassInfo". Backward compatible additions: - Added pure "bitmap" and "sound" - Added "variable" objects (mutable variables) - Added custom control demo. - Made "refresh" erase the background too. - Added "children" attribute for windows. - Added "border" attribute for windows. - Added "tabTraversal" attribute for windows. - Added wxGrid events and demo (samples/wx/Grid.hs). - Improved signatures for wxGrid. - Added "changes.txt" file :-) - Added "HAS_RADIO_MENU_ITEMS" to "isDefined". - Added support for radio menu items. - New wxHaskell+HOpenGL sample added to the contributions. Also added checks for NULL pointers. Bug fixes: - HtmlLinkClicked events are now properly generated. - Fixed bug that crashed wxHaskell when a tree control had the focus and a key was pressed. [ Apologies if you receive multiple copies. ] PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS Seventh International Symposium on Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages 2005 (PADL 05) http://www.unm.edu/~herme/padl05/ Long Beach, California, USA January 10-11, 2005 Co-located with ACM POPL, January 12-14, 2005 Paper submission deadline: September 10th Declarative languages build on sound theoretical foundations to provide attractive frameworks for application development. These languages have been successfully applied to a wide array of different real-world situations, including database management, active networks, software engineering, decision support systems, or music composition. New developments in theory and implementation have opened up new application areas. At the same time, the application of declarative languages to novel problems raises numerous interesting research issues. Well-known questions include designing for scalability, language extensions for application deployment, and programming environments. Thus, applications often drive the progress in the theory and implementation of declarative systems, and benefit from this progress as well. PADL is a forum for researchers and practioners to present original work emphasizing novel applications and implementation techniques for all forms of declarative concepts, including, functional, logic, constraints, etc. Topics of interest include: * Innovative applications of declarative languages. * Declarative domain-specific languages and applications. * Practical applications of theoretical results. * New language developments and their impact on applications. * Evaluation of implementation techniques on practical applications. * Novel implementation techniques relevant to applications. * Novel uses of declarative languages in the classroom. * Practical experiences. PADL 05 welcomes new ideas and approaches pertaining to applications and implementation of declarative languages, and is not limited to the scope of the first six PADL symposia (past proceedings can be found in Springer Verlag LNCS, numbers 1551, 1753, 1990, 2257, 2562, and 3057). In this occasion PADL is co-located, as traditionally, with ACM POPL, which will be held immediately following PADL, January 12-14. IMPORTANT DATES Paper Submission: September 10, 2004 Notification: October 10, 2004 Camera-ready: November 10, 2004 Symposium: January 10-11, 2005 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Authors should submit an electronic copy of the full paper (written in English) in Postscript (Level 2) or PDF. Submission should be completed using the electronic procedure available at the conference website. Papers must be no longer than 15 pages, written in 11-point font and with single spacing. Since the final proceedings will be published as Lecture Notes in Computer Science by Springer Verlag, authors are strongly encouraged to use the LNCS paper formatting guidelines for their submission. Strange "let"

Hi, I'm a Haskell newbie. I was trying several things with GHCi and found out that the expression "let a + b = 3" does not generate any errors. Prelude> let a + b = 3 Prelude> a <interactive>:1: Variable not in scope: `a' Prelude> b <interactive>:1: Variable not in scope: `b' Prelude> What does "let a + b = 3" mean in this case? I also tries with GHC compiler using the code below, but it generates no error. main :: IO () main = do let a + b = 3 putStrLn "Hello" Could somebody answer this? Jinwoo

Hyperlinking problem in Haddock

Hello, Does anybody know how you hyperlink your Haddock to functions whose name ends with a prime. e.g. foldl' I've tried.. 'foldl\'' and 'foldl'' But neither works. In each case I get a link to foldl (unprimed version) followed by an isolated ' character. This is with Haddock version 0.6 BTW. Thanks -- Adrian Hey

Haskell support for the Eclipse IDE 0.4

Dear Haskellers, There is now a new version of the Haskell development support for the Eclipse IDE. The project has been moved to Sourceforge, and the new project website is at http://eclipsefp.sourceforge.net . The new version requires Eclipse 3.0. Installation is done using the built-in update manager in Eclipse. The most significant changes and new features are: - improved support for compilation with GHC - support for running GHCi in the IDE with files from the project loaded - the Haskell source editor is much more configurable now - Haskell projects in the workspace can be browsed with the new Module Browser View - several bugs fixed For the next releases, we will focus on integrating more tools, and we will also start to make the IDE more language-aware (outline, code assist, dependencies view). generalised algebraic data types, existential types, and phantom types

I briefly skimmed the paper mentioned in a recent mailing on the ghc-users list that describes generalised algebraic data types (http://research.microsoft.com/Users/simonpj/papers/gadt/index.htm) my reaction can be summed up as "nifty!". I was curious to see if I could implement anything similar in current haskell, and ended up with the attached code. The main point of interest for me is the combination of phantom types and existential types; I'd never had the need to combine the two before. Is there any closer approximation possible? My code is close, but the type-safety isn't checked by the compiler (although it should be safe, if only the smart constructors are used), and it has that extra "Typeable" constraint. Abe
