I'm happy to announce that I have packaged up my first Haskell library, vorbiscomment, which allows for reading of "Vorbis comments" from Ogg Vorbis files. The code is rugged and surely buggy, but any feedback, patches, etc. are more than welcome. I do have a specific question in releasing this, and you can respond to my personal email address if this mailing list is not appropriate for discussion, but I'm wondering where my library's functionality should live within the module hierarchy. At present, I have simply placed it in a top-level "Vorbis" module, but this is surely not the proper place for it. And another quick note: I hope to create a wrapper library for general meddling with audio-file metadata. This would allow for reading/editing ID3, Vorbis comments, etc. all through a standard interface. With my vorbiscomment library and the "idiii" library available on HackageDB, the two most important tag formats (to me, anyway) are already covered. If anyone has any comments regarding this idea, please let me know. (Again, the question of where the functionality should live in the module hierarchy comes to mind...) Thanks, Chris Wagner

There will be no proceedings; it is an informal gathering of people involved in the design and development of Haskell implementations, tools, libraries, and supporting infrastructure. This relatively new workshop reflects the growth of the user community: there is a clear need for a well-supported tool chain for the development, distribution, deployment, and configuration of Haskell software. The aim is for this workshop to give the people involved with building the infrastructure behind this ecosystem an opportunity to bat around ideas, share experiences, and ask for feedback from fellow experts. We intend the workshop to have an informal and interactive feel, with a flexible timetable and plenty of room for ad-hoc discussion, demos, and impromptu short talks. Scope and target audience ------------------------- It is important to distinguish the Haskell Implementors' Workshop from the Haskell Symposium which is also co-located with ICFP 2009. The Haskell Symposium is for the publication of Haskell-related research. In contrast, the Haskell Implementors' Workshop will have no proceedings -- although we will aim to make slides and talk videos available with the consent of the speakers. In the Haskell Implementors' Workshop we hope to study the underlying technology. We want to bring together anyone interested in the nitty gritty details necessary to turn a text file into a deployed product. Having said that, members of the wider Haskell community are more than welcome to attend the workshop -- we need your feedback to keep the Haskell ecosystem thriving. The scope covers any of the following topics. There may be some topics that people feel we've missed, so by all means submit a proposal even if it doesn't fit exactly into one of these buckets: * Compilation techniques * Language features and extensions * Type system implementation * Concurrency and parallelism: language design and implementation * Performance, optimisation and benchmarking * Virtual machines and run-time systems * Libraries and Tools for development or deployment Talks ----- At this stage we would like to invite proposals from potential speakers for a relatively short talk. We are aiming for 20 min talks with 10 minutes for questions and changeovers. I'm pleased to announce the fruits of my labours during AusHac [1]: version 0.0.0.0 of the container-classes library [2] I was talking about in my last blog post [3]. [1]: http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/AusHac2010 [2]: http://hackage.haskell.org/package/container-classes [3]: http://ivanmiljenovic.wordpress.com/2010/07/14/data-oriented-hierarchies/ The purposes of this library is two-fold: * As a library writer, let your users choose which data structure they want to use rather than whichever one you decided upon when writing the library (e.g. you use lists predominantly, but your users may want to use Sets; by outputting a generic Container value yoru users don't need to keep using Set.fromList and Set.toList). * When writing your own code and you realise that you're using the wrong data structure for your purposes, if you used this library (correctly) then the amount of work you need to do to swap data structures is minimised. This current version is only a first draft. As such, I would appreciate feedback on the API. Currently, it provides its own definitions of all list-oriented functions in the Prelude plus a few more (e.g. partition), and list instances of all the classes. In terms of definitions, most class methods have default definitions in terms of fold. Furthermore, as much as possible I've defined them using a build/fold setup outlined in the paper "A Short Cut to Deforestation" by Andrew Gill, John Launchbury and Simon Peyton Jones (however I haven't yet defined the rules to get this used yet). However, the current list instances use the pre-defined versions in the Prelude and Data.List; I'm not sure if I should keep it this way or - where equivalent - use the pre-defined ones so that hopefully conversions from lists to other data types would also be removed without needing intermediary data structures. I'm pleased to announce a new release of highlighting-kate [1], a syntax highlighting library based on syntax definitions from the kate editor. !! Important note !! The new release uses new, two-letter class names in its HTML output. If you use highlighting-kate, you will need to update your css files. Three sample css files can be found in the css directory of the source. This release also incorporates improvements to the kate syntax definition for Haskell by Nicolas Wu. There are two minor API changes: 1. A new function, languagesByFilename, has been added. This will give better results than languagesByExtension for things like "Makefile" or "CMake.txt". 2. A new formatting option, OptDetailed, has been added. Use this only if you need access to detailed, language-specific lexical information, and not generic styles. 64-bit #const with hsc2hs?

[No response on haskell-cafe; trying haskell] Does anyone know if I can bring a 64-bit (long long or unsigned long long) value from C-land into Haskell via hsc2hs? #const on such a value seems to provide only the low 32 bits, at least in my environment (Haskell Platform 2009.2.0.2 on Windows). I've tried to create a 64-bit variant of #const without success. Dean
