Postdoctoral Position Available in Programming Languages Working on Fixed-Point-Oriented Programming
by Michael D. Adams 02 Jun '25

02 Jun '25

Hello, I am an assistant professor at NUS, and I am excited to announce the following postdoctoral position. Please share this post (available at https://michaeldadams.org/hiring) with anyone who you think might be interested. ## Postdoctoral Position Available in Programming Languages Working on Fixed-Point-Oriented Programming We are excited to announce a postdoctoral position in programming languages focused on the newly emerging paradigm of fixed-point-oriented programming. This paradigm allows for the development of programs based on inference rules that traverse a lattice, significantly simplifying complex algorithms in areas such as parsing, static analysis, type-checking, graph algorithms, and automata minimization. ### Position Details: - Application Process: If you or someone you know is interested in this position, please email me at "adamsmd AT nus.edu.sg" to schedule a Zoom interview. We are eager to fill this role quickly, so interviews will begin immediately, and we encourage you to reach out promptly to ensure your application is considered before the position is filled. - Duration and Salary: The position offers a competitive salary and a flexible start date, with funding available for 2 to 3 years, contingent upon satisfactory progress. ### About the Project: Fixed-point oriented programming is an emerging programming paradigm that lets one write programs in terms of inference rules that climb a lattice. While that might sound like obscure theory, in practice, it greatly simplifies many complex algorithms in domains such as parsing, static analysis, type checking, graph algorithms, and automata minimization. In fact, using this framework, many classic algorithms such as Dijkstra's algorithm, CYK parsing, Hopcroft's automata minimization algorithm, and tree-automata minimization can be expressed in only two or three executable lines of code. Our team is developing a language and implementation that transforms high-level specifications into optimized Haskell modules, similar to how parser generators, SQL engines, or SMT solvers streamline tasks in their respective domains. Key components of this project will involve language design, compiler development, and the development of sophisticated code optimization techniques. For more in-depth information, please refer to our lab's white paper: - https://michaeldadams.org/papers/fpop/fixed-point-oriented-programming.pdf ### About Me and My Research: My research is dedicated to empowering programmers to write clear, concise, and elegant code without compromising performance. My work encompasses next-generation languages, compilers, optimization, domain-specific and extensible languages, generic and meta-programming, duality, syntax and parsing, and static analysis/control-flow analysis. - Homepage: https://michaeldadams.org/ - Research Goals: https://michaeldadams.org/vitae/research-statement.pdf - Papers: https://michaeldadams.org/papers/ Posting Date: June 2, 2025 Posting URL: https://michaeldadams.org/hiring We look forward to your application! -- Michael D. [2nd CFP] HOPE'25: ACM SIGPLAN Workshop on Higher-Order Programming with Effects
by Taro Sekiyama 26 May '25

26 May '25

TL;DR: Talk proposal deadline for HOPE 2025 is on May 29, 2025. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HOPE 2025 The 13th ACM SIGPLAN Workshop on Higher-Order Programming with Effects October 12, 2025 Singapore (the day before ICFP 2025) https://conf.researchr.org/home/icfp-splash-2025/hope-2025 HOPE 2025 aims to bring together researchers interested in the design, semantics, implementation, and verification of higher-order effectful programs. It will be *informal*, consisting of invited talks, contributed talks on work in progress, and open-ended discussion sessions. ---------------------- Call for Talk Proposals ----------------------- We solicit proposals for contributed talks. We recommend preparing proposals of at most 2 pages excluding references, in either plain text or PDF format. However, we will accept longer proposals or submissions to other conferences, under the understanding that PC members are only expected to read the first two pages of such longer submissions. When submitting talk proposals, authors should specify how long a talk the speaker wishes to give. By default, contributed talks will be 30 minutes long, but proposals for shorter or longer talks will also be considered. Speakers may also submit supplementary material (e.g. a full paper, talk slides) if they desire, which PC members are free (but not expected) to read. We are interested in talks on all topics related to the interaction of higher-order programming and computational effects. Talks about work in progress are particularly encouraged. If you have any questions about the relevance of a particular topic, please contact the PC chairs, Guilhem Jaber (guilhem.jaber(a)inria.fr) and Taro Sekiyama (tsekiyama(a)acm.org) Deadline for talk proposals: May 29, 2025 (Thursday) Notification of acceptance: June 26, 2025 (Thursday) Workshop: October 12, 2025 (Sunday) The submission website is now open: https://hope25.hotcrp.com --------------------- Workshop Organization --------------------- Program Committee: William J. Bowman (University of British Columbia) Zeinab Galal (University of Bologna) Justin Hsu (Cornell University) Guilhem Jaber (Nantes Université) Danielle Marshall (University of Glasgow) Alexandre Moine (New York University) Takahiro Sanada (Fukui Prefectural University) Taro Sekiyama (National Institute of Informatics) Yahui Song (National University of Singapore) Leo White (Jane Street) Yizhou Zhang (University of Waterloo) --------------------- Goals of the Workshop --------------------- A recurring theme in many papers at ICFP, and in the research of many ICFP attendees, is the interaction of higher-order programming with various kinds of effects: storage effects, I/O, control effects, concurrency, etc. While effects are of critical importance in many applications, they also make code harder to build, maintain, and reason about. Higher-order languages (both functional and object-oriented) provide a variety of abstraction mechanisms to help “tame” or “encapsulate” effects (e.g. monads and handlers, ADTs, ownership types, typestate, first-class events, transactions, Hoare Type Theory, session types, substructural and region-based type systems), and a number of different semantic models and verification technologies have been developed in order to codify and exploit the benefits of this encapsulation (e.g. bisimulations, step-indexed Kripke logical relations, higher-order separation logic, game semantics, various modal logics). But there remain many open problems, and the field is highly active. The goal of the HOPE workshop is to bring researchers from a variety of different backgrounds and perspectives together to exchange new and exciting ideas concerning the design, semantics, implementation, and verification of higher-order effectful programs. We want HOPE to be as informal and interactive as possible. The program will thus involve a combination of invited talks, contributed talks about work in progress, and open-ended discussion sessions. There will be no published proceedings, but participants will be invited to submit working documents, talk slides, etc., to be made available online.

Website: https://rcra2025.wordpress.com ------------------------------ 18th Workshop on Answer Set Programming and Other Computing Paradigms (ASPOCP 2025) Workshop on combining Answer Set Programming with Other Computing Paradigms, such as constraint satisfaction, quantified Boolean formulas (QBF), Constraint Logic Programming (CLP), first-order logic (FOL). Website: https://sites.google.com/view/aspocp-2025/ ------------------------------ 12th Workshop on Probabilistic Logic Programming (PLP 2025) The PLP workshop encompasses all aspects of combining logic, algorithms, programming, and probability. Due to logic programming's strong theoretical underpinnings, PLP is one of the more disciplined areas of probabilistic programming. It builds upon and benefits from the large body of existing work in logic programming, both in semantics and implementation, but also presents new challenges to the field. Website: https://stoics.org.uk/~plp2025/ ------------------------------ 9th Workshop on Advances in Argumentation in Artificial Intelligence (AI³ 2025) Argumentation is the study of the processes and activities involving the production and exchange of arguments, where arguments are attempts to persuade someone or something by giving reasons for accepting a particular conclusion as evident. The goal of the workshop is to stimulate discussions and promote scientific collaboration among researchers not only directly involved in argumentation, but also from research fields indirectly related to argumentation. Website: https://tinyurl.com/ai3w25 ------------------------------ Third Prolog Education Workshop (PEG 2025) The PEG workshop series is one of the initiatives of the Prolog Education Group 2.0 (PEG 2.0), which aims to promote the use of Prolog-like computing to make logical reasoning and trustworthy coding skills more universally available. PEG 2.0 builds upon a nearly 50-year history of developing educational materials for using logic programming languages such as Prolog and ASP to introduce children in primary and secondary schools to both logic and computing. It also includes the insights and innovations developed for teaching Prolog at university level in both Computing and non-Computing courses. Website: https://prolog-lang.org/Education/PrologEducationWS2025.html ------------------------------ Second Annual Workshop on Prolog Improvement Proposals (PIPs) The PIP workshop series offers Prolog implementers and users an opportunity to present short descriptions of features desired or not supported in all systems that they believe would benefit other systems and are thus candidates for PIPs. It is also a chance to become familiar and comment on the process of PIP creation and the current PIPs. Website: https://prolog-lang.org/ImplementersForum/PIPWorkshop2025.html ------------------------------ Workshop on Logic Programming and Legal Reasoning (LPLR 2025) Representation of legal rules and reasoning over them is a critical application area since laws and regulations are used in almost all human activities. Furthermore, corpora pertaining to laws and regulations are typically complex and enormous in size, and experts are usually needed in order to apply legal reasoning in everyday life. Thus, automating reasoning over legal documents by means of applying logic programming can speed up a process that is laborious and time consuming. The aim of the workshop is to give the opportunity to legal experts and computer scientists to present recent research results and discuss related ideas on this particularly active area of research. Website: https://lplr2025.legaltech.wales/ ------------------------------ 1st Workshop on Cognitive Architectures for Robotics: LLMs and Logic in Action (CARLA) CARLA aims to advance the field of intelligent robotics through the integration of large language models (LLMs), symbolic reasoning, and logic solvers. Addressing the demands of real-world adaptability, safety, and complex decision-making, the workshop explores the complementary roles of LLMs and symbolic systems. By combining the dynamic adaptability of LLMs with the precise inferential capabilities of symbolic solvers, CARLA seeks to promote the development of intelligent, reliable, and explainable robotic systems capable of effective human interaction. About CALCO and MFPS -------------------- CALCO aims to bring together researchers and practitioners with interests in foundational aspects, and both traditional and emerging uses of algebra and coalgebra in computer science. MFPS conferences are dedicated to the areas of mathematics, logic, and computer science that are related to models of computation in general, and to semantics of programming languages in particular. This is a forum where researchers in mathematics and computer science can meet and exchange ideas. The participation of researchers in neighbouring areas is strongly encouraged.
