ANNOUNCE: time-recurrence-0.9.0

I am happy to announce a new version of time-recurrence, a library of functions for generating recurring sequences of dates: http://hackage.haskell.org/package/time-recurrence New in version 0.9.0 is a redesigned top layer API. Previously recurrences were described by combining generating functions to get the desired effect. This was quite functional but had the drawback that a recurrence was difficult to persist outside of the Haskell run-time. As of version 0.9.0 this limitation is no more. Now the actual recurrence rule is defined by combining types into a data structure which can either be persisted (and later read back) or evaluated into a function to generate dates. This also means that the type system now enforces correct rule creation! Additionally some convenience functions are available to construct the recurrence rule in a format familiar to previous users of this library. Here is a familiar example: Generate the 15th and 30th of the month, but only during the work week: > jan2011 = ptime "Sat, 01 Jan 2012 00:00:00 -0400" > jan2012 = ptime "Sun, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 -0400" > takeWhile (<= jan2013) $ starting jan2012 $ > recur monthly > >==> enum (Days [15,30]) > >==> filter (WeekDays [Monday .. I'm developing a framework for artificial life experiments that I would like to make available on Hackage eventually. I've read all the guidance and proposals I could find for where to place packages in the hierarchy: http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Hierarchical_module_names http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/fp/libraries/layout.html http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/fp/libraries/layoutSM.html I've also examined the current hierarchy of modules: http://hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/pkg-list.html The current hierarchy has a top-level AI category, so it would seem logical to me to add a top-level ALife category and put my package under that. But perhaps it would be best not to start a new top-level category? I could put my package under AI, because my framework does support the use of AI, and wouldn't look too out of place with the other packages there. Thoughts?

[ANNOUNCE] dynamic-linker-template: automatically derive dynamic linking methods from a data type.

Hi, A few days ago I uploaded on Hackage the first release of dynamic-linker-template package (System.Posix.DynamicLinker.Template). Basically, it uses Template Haskell to generate boilerplate code to dynamically load symbols of a shared library into a data defined using "record" syntax. Simple example: ---------------------- {-# LANGUAGE TemplateHaskell, ForeignFunctionInterface #-} import System.Posix.DynamicLinker.Template data MyLib = MyLib { -- Mandatory field (name and type) libHandle :: DL, -- Mandatory symbol. I don't use optional symbols yet but I will as I need to support different OpenCL versions that expose different symbols (some become deprecated and new releases add new ones). I use a custom function to transform field names into symbol names (to strip prefix). This functionality will also be useful with CUDA library which appends "_v2" to every symbol in recent releases... Do not hesitate to report any bug or suggestion. cyclotomic is a library that allows exact calculations with a subfield of the complex numbers. The cyclotomic numbers are a subset of the complex numbers with the following properties: * The cyclotomic numbers are represented exactly, enabling exact computations and equality comparisons. * The cyclotomic numbers contain the Gaussian rationals (complex numbers of the form p + q i with p and q rational). As a consequence, the cyclotomic numbers are a dense subset of the complex numbers. * The cyclotomic numbers contain the square roots of all rational numbers. * The cyclotomic numbers form a field: they are closed under addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. * The cyclotomic numbers contain the sine and cosine of all rational multiples of pi. * The cyclotomic numbers can be thought of as the rational field extended with nth roots of unity for arbitrarily large integers n. Spam on the Haskell wiki

I recently moved, and when I returned to the Internet a few days later, I was greeted with several hundred spam pages in Recent Changes. The torrent of spam has not let up, and I estimate that I have blocked 3-500 accounts and deleted as many pages. (I blocked another 5 or so while composing this email.) Certainly the deletion and block logs are long enough: - http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=delet… - http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/index.php?title=Special:Ipblocklist&limi… I have asked Ashley Yakeley to turn on additional anti-spam measures, but he has not been active on the wiki since January (http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Special:Contributions/Ashley_Y http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/index.php?title=Special:Log&user=Ashley_Y) and has not replied to my talk messages or accompanying emails. I had to do this single-handedly as there are no other administrators. This took up a good chunk of today and yesterday, and the spam is continuing. I cannot handle it much longer: it's incredibly tedious and using up far more time than I have to give it. Measures need to be taken: 1. Email confirmation needs to be checked that Ashley did in fact enable it. I suspect he did not, since I also administrate the LessWrong wiki - which I know for certain has email confirmation is enabled - is being attacked by the same spammers (similar or identical templates & spam) but at a much reduced scale. 2. Additional administrators must be created. I suggest: - dons - Magnus Therning - Neil Mitchell - byorgey - Henk-Jan van Tuyl I am sure there are others who can be trusted. 3. Additional bureaucrats should be created. I suggest myself. 4. ReCAPTCHA enabled for 'edits adding new, unrecognized external links' - which is all of the spam. If none of these steps are taken and spam continues to remain a problem in 2 months (15 September 2012), I will cease patrolling Recent Changes. The Programming Language and Software Technology Group, headed by Klaus Ostermann, conducts research dedicated to developing new technologies that help to construct high-quality software in a productive way. We use and develop an exciting set of technologies involving functional, object-oriented, domain-specific and aspect-oriented programming languages, software product lines, parser technology, language-integrated queries, static and dynamic software analysis, type systems, and many other topics.
